| | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. |

*Mavericks-76ers Preview* =========================
By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor
Dallas (11-5) at Philadelphia (0-15), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Considering their next two opponents, the Philadelphia 76ers may wind up breaking more than just a franchise record for consecutive losses to begin a season.
And to make matters worse, they need to beat the odds without their leading scorer.
The 76ers will try to avoid setting a new team mark for season-opening futility when they begin a tough two-game stretch Saturday night against the Dallas Mavericks, who beat them by 53 points earlier this month.
Philadelphia tied the franchise record with a 15th straight loss to begin 2014-15, falling 99-91 at home to Brooklyn on Wednesday. The 76ers also opened 0-15 in 1972-73 on their way to setting an NBA record for fewest wins in an 82-game schedule at 9-73.
With the defending-champion San Antonio Spurs visiting Wells Fargo Center on Monday after this matchup against the Mavericks (12-5), Philadelphia could wind up facing NBA history when it hits the road Wednesday to take on Minnesota.
The Nets hold the league record for losses to begin a season, dropping their first 18 in 2009-10, and the 76ers will be on the verge of matching that dubious distinction by the time they get to Minneapolis if they can't manage a victory against the Mavs or Spurs.
"I see good things," coach Brett Brown said. "It's unfortunate for those guys. I bleed for those guys that they can't get a win to validate the work they have put in."
As if facing the Texas tandem wasn't already hard enough, the 76ers also announced Friday that Tony Wroten, who is averaging team highs of 17.9 points and 6.3 assists, will be out at least a week after spraining his right knee Wednesday. Wroten, one of only two Sixers averaging double figures in points, will be re-evaluated Dec. 5.
Losing their starting point guard is not going to help the NBA's worst offense - which is scoring 89.9 points per game - against its best.
Dallas is averaging a league-leading 109.1 points following a 106-102 win at Toronto on Friday in a matchup of the league's top two scoring teams. Monta Ellis had 30 points to lead the Mavs, who trailed 10-0 early on.
"You know, we've had some struggles in recent games," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official site. "And this was hard-fought, so I give our guys a lot of credit."
What could serve as motivation for the Sixers is their humiliating 123-70 loss in Dallas on Nov. 13, a margin of victory that set a Dallas team record. Philadelphia had more turnovers (28) than field goals (23) in that contest.
While there is slight reason for optimism due to the Mavs scoring at a higher clip at home (115.9 points per game) than on the road (101.4) this season, the 76ers' defense has been just as abysmal as their offense with 105.4 points allowed per game.
Philadelphia did show some signs of life against Brooklyn, rallying from a 20-point deficit and taking the lead early in the fourth quarter, and K.J. McDaniels came off the bench to match Wroten with a team-high 18 points.
"I thought we played some of our best basketball of the year and also some of our poorest," Brown told the team's official site.
With Wroten sidelined, the Sixers need more from McDaniels and Michael Carter-Williams, who is second on the team with 14.3 points per game but was erratic with a 1-for-9 shooting performance and four points against the Nets before fouling out.
The 76ers have lost four straight and 13 of 16 against Dallas.
