|
| | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: JRUE HOLIDAY is knocking on the door of All-Star status. He's excellent defensively, though his stats sometimes sag because of Philly's deliberate style . . . JASON RICHARDSON gives them some shooting on the wing, but may see his minutes fade if he can't play the kind of defense Collins demands . . . Swingman EVAN TURNER is an intriguing but flawed player. He doesn't quite have the offensive repertoire to be a primary scorer, and he'll continue to get inconsistent minutes as Collins plays to matchups on the wings . . . NICK YOUNG will have something of a lesser sixth-man role than Lou Williams used to have . . . As an offensively-limited but athletic, defensive-minded guard, ROYAL IVEY is the kind of bench player Collins looks for. FORWARDS: Even with Elton Brand gone, THADDEUS YOUNG will play more of a part-time role. Collins has never seemed satisfied with his talented young 'tweener, and Spencer Hawes is expected to slide to the four alongside Andrew Bynum . . . DORELL WRIGHT brings some much needed shooting on the wing. He plays the kind of defense Collins demands and, if his shot is on, he should be close to a 30-MPG player despite his struggles in Golden State last season . . . LAVOY ALLEN is a serviceable reserve big. He'll see few minutes off the bench unless Bynum gets hurt . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE fits the Sixers mold as an athlete. He could be a regular in the rotation by midseason. CENTERS: Maybe ANDREW BYNUM will be happier moving back to the east coast. As long as his knees hold up, he's an All-Star lock . . . SPENCER HAWES will actually play a lot of four this year. He's an offensively-capable 7-footer who's also become a much better rebounder over the past couple seasons . . . KWAME BROWN will be sparingly used as a big body who can move on the defensive end. |

*Bobcats-76ers Preview* =======================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Charlotte (17-54) at Philadelphia (28-43), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Time has all but run out on the Philadelphia 76ers' playoff hopes. Failure to take advantage of back-to-back games against the lowly Charlotte Bobcats would likely hasten their official elimination.
The 76ers will try to continue their dominance over the Bobcats on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
Philadelphia (29-43) has only 10 contests remaining as it tries to make up a 6 1/2-game deficit to Milwaukee for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers have kept their faint hopes alive by winning three of four, including a 100-92 victory over the Bucks on Wednesday.
Philadelphia followed with a 97-87 win in Cleveland on Friday as Evan Turner had 23 points and a season high-tying 13 rebounds.
"Any type of win is a great win," Turner said. "I got in a good rhythm coming right out of halftime. Any time when I'm attacking, I feel like I can be successful. The shots started falling, which was definitely cool."
Jrue Holiday contributed 20 points and Spencer Hawes registered his sixth double-double in eight games with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
"Our guys are playing to win, which is great," Doug Collins said. "The spirit of the team is good, which I really like. This was a good win, and I'm very proud of our guys."
The 76ers will next try to record their first three-game win streak in nearly two months and earn a season-high fourth straight victory at home. A visit from the Bobcats would appear to help Collins' team in pulling off both feats as Philadelphia has won five straight in the series and four in a row at home.
The 76ers prevailed 87-76 in the most recent meeting Feb. 9 in Philadelphia as Lavoy Allen had a career-high 22 rebounds and 14 points. Holiday scored 20 and Jeremy Pargo added 12 off the bench in his debut with the team.
Turner had 25 points and four other Sixers scored in double figures in a 104-98 win in Charlotte on Nov. 30.
The Bobcats (17-55) head into this game with three wins in their last six contests but lost 111-102 at New York on Friday after falling behind by 30 in the first half. Gerald Henderson tied a career high with 35 points in the team's season high-tying ninth straight road defeat.
"We've got a lot of fight," Henderson said. "It's just tough when you see you're down 30. It's hard to see the light. We got a lot of guys with pride and a lot heart. We just couldn't come up with it at the end of the game."
The 76ers and Bobcats will close the season series Wednesday in Charlotte, the start of a four-game road trip for Philadelphia. The Bobcats wrap up a three-game trek Monday in Milwaukee before returning home.
Philadelphia hasn't won three straight since Jan. 30-Feb. 4, and its last four-game home win streak was Jan. 27-Feb. 1, 2012, which started with an 89-72 win over Charlotte.
