| |  | PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: JRUE HOLIDAY is knocking on the door of All-Star status. He's excellent defensively, though his stats sometimes sag because of Philly's deliberate style . . . JASON RICHARDSON gives them some shooting on the wing, but may see his minutes fade if he can't play the kind of defense Collins demands . . . Swingman EVAN TURNER is an intriguing but flawed player. He doesn't quite have the offensive repertoire to be a primary scorer, and he'll continue to get inconsistent minutes as Collins plays to matchups on the wings . . . NICK YOUNG will have something of a lesser sixth-man role than Lou Williams used to have . . . As an offensively-limited but athletic, defensive-minded guard, ROYAL IVEY is the kind of bench player Collins looks for. FORWARDS: Even with Elton Brand gone, THADDEUS YOUNG will play more of a part-time role. Collins has never seemed satisfied with his talented young 'tweener, and Spencer Hawes is expected to slide to the four alongside Andrew Bynum . . . DORELL WRIGHT brings some much needed shooting on the wing. He plays the kind of defense Collins demands and, if his shot is on, he should be close to a 30-MPG player despite his struggles in Golden State last season . . . LAVOY ALLEN is a serviceable reserve big. He'll see few minutes off the bench unless Bynum gets hurt . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE fits the Sixers mold as an athlete. He could be a regular in the rotation by midseason. CENTERS: Maybe ANDREW BYNUM will be happier moving back to the east coast. As long as his knees hold up, he's an All-Star lock . . . SPENCER HAWES will actually play a lot of four this year. He's an offensively-capable 7-footer who's also become a much better rebounder over the past couple seasons . . . KWAME BROWN will be sparingly used as a big body who can move on the defensive end. |

The Portland Trail Blazers are well aware that they need to perform better on the road if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Blazers will try to start a five-game trip in winning fashion Monday night when they take on a Philadelphia 76ers team which has significantly dimmer postseason hopes.
With 17 games remaining, Portland (31-34) has plenty of ground to make up to move into the Western Conference's top eight but is among six teams within 5 1/2 games of each other for the final three playoff spots.
The Blazers have helped themselves lately with back-to-back home wins, but their next five games are on the road, where they've dropped 12 of 14. That doesn't bode well heading into a trip that features four teams currently in playoff position, not to mention two sets of games on back-to-back nights.
"This is a make-or-break road trip for us. I keep saying we're right there. If we play good on this trip then anything is possible," said LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 31 points and 12 rebounds in a 112-101 win over Detroit on Saturday.
Aldridge posted a third straight double-double, and J.J. Hickson recorded his 10th in 12 games since the All-Star break with 18 points and 15 boards.
The solid play of those big men has helped Portland win six of 10, including double-digit victories in the last two.
"Hopefully it's a little momentum for us going out on the road," coach Terry Stotts said.
The lone opponent Portland will face on this trip that is not in position for the postseason is Philadelphia (25-40), which is eight games back of eighth-place Milwaukee in the East.
The 76ers will try to boost their faint hopes by finishing with a winning record on a four-game homestand. After getting edged by red-hot Miami on Wednesday, they defeated Central Division-leading Indiana 98-91 on Saturday.
"I think our guys are settling into a really good style. I'm really happy with the way they've responded," coach Doug Collins said. "Our guys want to win, and they want to build. This is not a situation where our guys don't want to do anything other than that
"Just watching the tape, we're playing really connected basketball."
Spencer Hawes had 18 points, a season-high eight assists and personal bests of 16 rebounds and seven blocks in Philadelphia's third victory in 16 games. Jrue Holiday provided 27 points, 12 assists and six rebounds.
"I really like the nucleus we have here and what we've built here," Hawes said. "This year has been tough on everybody. I think if we can keep the right mindset going forward, and finish out strong, I think the future is bright."
Holiday had 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in Portland on Dec. 29, but the 76ers fell 89-85. Nicolas Batum had 22 points and eight assists to lead the Blazers, who have won three straight in this series - all in Portland.
Wesley Matthews missed that last meeting, but his 20.5 career scoring average versus Philadelphia is easily his highest against any opponent.
The Blazers are playing in Philadelphia for the first time since an 88-79 loss Nov. 30, 2010.
