KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN ANTONIO: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-3 to Denver in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Gregg Popovich (24th season, 1245-575).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Dejounte Murray (missed last season with knee injury), G Bryn Forbes (11.8 ppg), G DeMar DeRozan (21.2), F LaMarcus Aldridge (21.3), C Jakob Poeltl (5.5).
KEY LOSSES: None
KEY ADDITIONS: F DeMarre Carroll, F Trey Lyles, G/F Keldon Johnson, F Luka Samanic
PLAYERS TO WATCH: DeRozan spent most of last season processing a trade that unexpectedly sent him to the Spurs and away from the Toronto Raptors, the franchise he pledged his devotion to ' then watched them win a title. Murray's injury also forced DeRozan to become the team's main distributor for the first time in his career. DeRozan set a career high with 6.2 assists per game but also had his second-lowest scoring average in six seasons. Murray is back and spent the offseason sending video of specific plays to show the 30-year-old guard how he could help him score more easily.
OUTLOOK: The Spurs continue to get younger and faster while trying to maintain their veteran presence and corporate knowledge. The latter received a huge boost with the addition of Hall of Famer Tim Duncan as an assistant coach. Duncan's knowledge of the Spurs' system, work ethic and camaraderie should help the team's development as it attempts to an establish an identity separate from but similar to the Big Three era spearheaded by Duncan that led to five NBA championships. Murray's return along with the return of White, expected emergence of Lonnie Walker IV and addition of Carroll should make the Spurs among the best wing defenses in the league.
ORLANDO: LAST SEASON: 42-40, lost 4-1 in first round to Toronto
COACH: Steve Clifford (second season with Magic; seventh season overall, 238-254).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Evan Fournier (15.1 ppg), G D.J. Augustin (11.7), F Aaron Gordon (16.0), F Jonathan Isaac (9.6), C Nikola Vucevic (20.8).
KEY LOSSES: None.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Al-Farouq Aminu, G Markelle Fultz (acquired in February from Philadelphia but didn't play).
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There isn't a lot of mystery to the Magic entering this season, since they bring back basically the same team and will be adding a former No. 1 overall pick in Fultz who has worked for months to fix his shoulder and shooting issues. Vucevic is coming off a season where he set career-bests in points, rebounds and assists per game. When Gordon scored big, the Magic were really good; they went 16-8 in the 24 games where Gordon reached the 20-point mark. Terrence Ross is basically a sixth starter for Orlando, needing only 26.5 minutes per game to average 15.1 points last season in an instant-offense role coming off the bench.
OUTLOOK: The Magic improved by 17 wins last season and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012, doing all that without the burden of expectation. They won't have that same luxury this year, not after bringing back virtually every part of a team that didn't just get into the playoffs but did so by going 22-9 down the stretch of the regular season. Getting to the foul line more would be a major help, after the Magic ranked last in free throws made and free throws attempted last season. The biggest challenge for Clifford may be finding ways for his team to replicate the same get-into-the-playoffs hunger it had a year ago.
PREVIEW
Magic look to exploit Spurs' struggling defense

The Orlando Magic have played better of late but will face another tough test to maintain momentum when they host the slumping San Antonio Spurs on Friday.

If there's any good time to play the Spurs, it might be during this stretch when they are struggling on defense.

The Magic won for the second time in a week and just the fourth time this season Wednesday when Nikola Vucevic scored 25 points to lead seven Orlando players in double figures in a 112-97 home victory.

Aaron Gordon had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Evan Fournier and Terrence Ross each had 13 points and D.J. Augustin had 12 points and eight assists off the bench.

Jonathan Isaac also had 12 points and Michael Carter-Williams had 11 for the Magic, who improved to 4-3 at home this season. Vucevic also grabbed 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season.

"It was definitely a big win for us," Carter-Williams said. "To get back in the win column the way we did, playing defense, sharing the ball. Everybody involved was big for us, and we want to build on that."

Augustin played the entire fourth quarter, in which the Magic outscored the 76ers by a decisive 32-15 margin.

"We know we needed this win tonight in the worst way, and guys had the same attitude on the floor and it showed," Augustin told the Orlando Sentinel.

Meanwhile, the Spurs lost their third straight, producing another lukewarm performance in a 129-114 defeat Wednesday at Minnesota. San Antonio will play five of its next six games on the road.

It was third time in 11 games this season that San Antonio allowed an opponent 120 or more points.

"I think we're very challenged defensively," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Another poor outing defensively, and that's where we're at. There's not much more to say."

DeMar DeRozan led the team with 27 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 23 points for San Antonio, which finished just 3 for 17 from beyond the arc.

Bryn Forbes had 13, Dejounte Murray scored 11, and Patty Mills and Rudy Gay pumped in 10 points apiece in the loss for the Spurs, who have lost five of their last six games.

"Nobody wants to lose, but I'd rather that we have these mistakes now," DeRozan said. "We have plenty of time to clean it up. I know for a fact that we definitely will."

Speaking of DeRozan, there are reports circulating the league that Orlando has expressed interest in trading for the former All-Star, who's believed to be seeking a max contract extension this summer.

San Antonio owns a 43-18 edge in the all-time series, but 12 of those wins by the Magic have come at home. The Spurs earned their largest win over Orlando in franchise history on Dec. 19, 2018, defeating the Magic 129-90 at the Amway Center.
