KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility.
ORLANDO: GUARDS: VICTOR OLADIPO, who will miss the first four weeks of season with a facial fracture suffered in a late October practice, will play off the ball more, allowing him to slash from the wing. It's a more natural role for him . . . With Jameer Nelson jettisoned, ELFRID PAYTON will step in as the starter at the point. He has an enormous transition from the Sun Belt Conference, but the quickness and athleticism are there . . . EVAN FOURNIER never found consistency in Denver, but could be a valuable wing shooter on a team that needs it . . . BEN GORDON was signed with a very 'tradeable' contract in mind. The Magic are hoping he shoots well enough to draw some suitors . . . LUKE RIDNOUR is a veteran insurance policy behind Payton . . . WILLIE GREEN can be an effective second-unit player . . . ROY DEVYN MARBLE seems like a D-Leaguer. FORWARDS: The Magic brought in CHANNING FRYE to provide some floor spacing and a veteran presence, both much-needed . . . TOBIAS HARRIS will likely have to play some more small forward. He has the offensive skill set to do it, but defense will continue to be an issue . . . He can play both forward spots, and AARON GORDON should be one of the league's better defensive forwards right off the bat. But for now, his offense is limited to dunking . . . It's a big year for MAURICE HARKLESS, who has yet to establish himself as a rotation-caliber player. With Harris and Gordon capable of playing the 3, Harkless could lose major minutes . . . ANDREW NICHOLSON has a ways to go after a disappointing second season. He's likely on the outside of this rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA VUCEVIC is a cornerstone player in Orlando because he's big, and he does everything just well enough. He's not a game-changer on either side of the court . . . KYLE O'QUINN has had some good moments in garbage-time games the past two seasons. It's enough to keep him on the roster.

*Suns-Magic Preview* ====================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Phoenix (31-30) at Orlando (19-42), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Phoenix Suns have been struggling for more than a month, and their deadline trades haven't helped matters.

They hope Wednesday night's matchup with the offensively challenged Orlando Magic can help them get back on track, though they've come up short in recent opportunities on the road against lesser competition.

Phoenix (31-30) continues to slip in the standings, falling to 2 1/2 games out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference following a 5-12 stretch. The Suns have lost five of seven after trading Goran Dragic and Isaiah Thomas, while Brandon Knight hasn't impressed since coming over from Milwaukee.

They lost to Dragic and Miami 115-98 on Monday. Alex Len was ejected after a scuffle, while Markieff Morris was tossed for a flagrant-2 foul after officials determined he shoved Dragic in the back on a layup.

"It was a hard foul. It was a basketball play I thought, but the refs thought otherwise," said Morris, who is three technical fouls shy of earning a one-game suspension.

Knight was 3 for 12 with five turnovers and has averaged 13.5 points on 37.0 percent shooting in six games after averaging 17.8 points and shooting 43.5 percent with the Bucks.

Phoenix has averaged 16.9 turnovers since dealing Dragic and Thomas compared to 14.9 previously.

"They just take the ball out of our hands. Maybe they grabbed the arm, but you have to be tougher than that," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "When teams get physical, we look like a high school team in terms of our competitiveness and the way we battle against some of these teams. We have to get tougher."

The Suns have dropped eight of nine on the road, falling to the likes of West bottom feeders Sacramento and Minnesota.

While Phoenix has surrendered 111.3 points per game over its last eight overall, the Magic (19-42) are averaging 87.0 and shooting 41.2 percent during a three-game skid.

Tobias Harris has been limited to 11.8 points per game on 37.5 percent shooting in his last five. Harris, who had been scoring 17.5 and shooting 46.8 percent, was 4 of 13 and Orlando shot 36.5 percent in a 98-83 loss to Charlotte on Sunday. Nikola Vucevic, averaging a team-high 19.8 points, was 4 for 12 for a season low-matching 10.

"We couldn't consistently get shots," interim coach James Borrego said. "We were turning it over, getting poor shots. Those balls weren't going through the hoop. And I felt like we were getting back in transition defense all night."

The Magic have let their last 14 opponents shoot 50.2 percent in the first quarter, getting outscored by six or more seven times in that span.

"We have to do a better job of coming out and be the aggressors and take the game to the other team," Vucevic told the Magic's official website. "We can't let them play their game and always be playing catch-up. We have to do a better job of starting the game off right. That will help us a lot."

Harris scored 21 in a 93-90 win at Phoenix on Nov. 30 as the teams combined for 42 turnovers.

The Suns ended a five-game slide in Orlando with a 104-96 win Nov. 24, 2013.
