KEY GAME INFORMATION
INDIANA: GUARDS: Indy couldn't find an upgrade on GEORGE HILL this offseason, and losing Lance Stephenson and Paul George means Hill will have to play a more traditional ball-handling role this year . . . RODNEY STUCKEY's combo-guard skills probably make him the best fit alongside Hill. Whether he's up to the task defensively will decide whether he's a full-time player or a time-share guy . . . C.J. MILES will help fill the need for perimeter shooting, especially with Paul George out . . . They have a solid veteran back-up in C.J. WATSON. He's the closest thing to a pure point guard on this roster, and is a bigger need for the second unit than the starting five. FORWARDS: PAUL GEORGE was poised for an MVP run, but he'll now miss the season after a compound leg fracture during Team USA practice. He's no guarantee to ever return at full strength . . . DAVID WEST's floor-spacing, mid-range game is key in this system . . . He was a dud in his first season with the Pacers, but Indy might have no choice but to plug LUIS SCOLA into their thin frontcourt rotation . . . DAMJAN RUDEZ is a stretch-4 with three-point range. He could push Scola for a rotation spot . . . The Pacers are hoping SOLOMON HILL is ready to be a second-unit glue guy . . . LAVOY ALLEN brings size and opposable thumbs . . . They seemingly have little use for CHRIS COPELAND after signing Rudez. CENTERS: As strange as it seems, ROY HIBBERT might benefit most from the departure of Lance Stephenson. The big man was referring to Stephenson when he talked about selfish play. Of course, Hibbert's atrocious performance late last season is a problem in and of itself . . . IAN MAHINMI has size and six fouls to give.
ORLANDO: GUARDS: VICTOR OLADIPO, who will miss the first four weeks of season with a facial fracture suffered in a late October practice, will play off the ball more, allowing him to slash from the wing. It's a more natural role for him . . . With Jameer Nelson jettisoned, ELFRID PAYTON will step in as the starter at the point. He has an enormous transition from the Sun Belt Conference, but the quickness and athleticism are there . . . EVAN FOURNIER never found consistency in Denver, but could be a valuable wing shooter on a team that needs it . . . BEN GORDON was signed with a very 'tradeable' contract in mind. The Magic are hoping he shoots well enough to draw some suitors . . . LUKE RIDNOUR is a veteran insurance policy behind Payton . . . WILLIE GREEN can be an effective second-unit player . . . ROY DEVYN MARBLE seems like a D-Leaguer. FORWARDS: The Magic brought in CHANNING FRYE to provide some floor spacing and a veteran presence, both much-needed . . . TOBIAS HARRIS will likely have to play some more small forward. He has the offensive skill set to do it, but defense will continue to be an issue . . . He can play both forward spots, and AARON GORDON should be one of the league's better defensive forwards right off the bat. But for now, his offense is limited to dunking . . . It's a big year for MAURICE HARKLESS, who has yet to establish himself as a rotation-caliber player. With Harris and Gordon capable of playing the 3, Harkless could lose major minutes . . . ANDREW NICHOLSON has a ways to go after a disappointing second season. He's likely on the outside of this rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA VUCEVIC is a cornerstone player in Orlando because he's big, and he does everything just well enough. He's not a game-changer on either side of the court . . . KYLE O'QUINN has had some good moments in garbage-time games the past two seasons. It's enough to keep him on the roster.

*Pacers-Magic Preview* ======================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Indiana (15-30) at Orlando (15-31), 6:00 p.m. EDT

When coach Jacque Vaughn told his Orlando Magic to pick up the tempo and increase the scoring output, he insists he didn't mean that it should come at the expense of defense.

The Magic will try to have a more balanced approach as they look to snap a four-game skid and deal the visiting Indiana Pacers a season worst-tying eighth straight defeat.

Orlando (15-31) ranked 28th in the league in scoring at 93.6 points per game after falling 101-84 at the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 9. Although its been putting up an average of 107.4 over the seven games since, Vaughn still isn't pleased.

The Magic have allowed at least 101 points in eight straight while giving up an average of 113.1 in that stretch following Friday's 113-106 loss at New York. They surrendered 99.2 per game prior to that slump.

"Our mindset of coming into the game and trying to outscore people instead of outplaying them and out-defending them ... it's evident in how we're approaching the game," Vaughn said. "The defensive end needs to be a premium. Instead of thinking about scoring the basketball as soon as you step on the floor, worry about defending the basketball. That would help."

Nikola Vucevic had his NBA-best 26th double-double with a season high-tying 34 points and 18 rebounds, but Orlando allowed the Knicks to shoot 40.0 percent from 3-point range.

"We've been able to score and did again pretty well (Friday). We've just got to step it up defensively - all of us," Vucevic said. "Every single guy on this team, we've got to do a better job taking pride in playing better defense one-on-one and helping for each other. There's got to be a better effort on that end. We can't focus on our offense and try to outscore people."

Orlando had trouble at both ends Nov. 28 in the first meeting with Indiana, which didn't have Roy Hibbert or George Hill because of injuries. Rodney Stuckey scored 24 and David West added 18 in a 98-83 victory that was the Pacers' sixth in seven meetings.

Indiana (15-30) ranks near the bottom of the NBA in points per game (94.7) and shooting percentage (42.7) and shot just 41.0 percent in Friday's 89-87 loss at Miami.

Hill returned from an 11-game absence with 13 points off the bench, but the Pacers lost for the fourth time on a five-game trip despite nearly rallying from a huge deficit.

"Lot of heart, lot of fight," coach Frank Vogel said. "We battled back in a game down 21 to give ourselves a chance to tie it up. Very proud of the group that did that."

The Pacers fell to 6-21 when trailing after the first quarter.

"We were very displeased with how we played in the first half," Vogel said. "I challenged them early on to get a little angry and we did. We started playing better. Clearly we have to start the game better."

C.J. Miles scored eight points in the first seven minutes against the Heat before leaving with a groin injury after Vogel placed him in the starting lineup ahead of Stuckey. It's unclear if Miles will be able to play in this contest.
