| | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. | | ORLANDO: GUARDS: VICTOR OLADIPO, who will miss the first four weeks of season with a facial fracture suffered in a late October practice, will play off the ball more, allowing him to slash from the wing. It's a more natural role for him . . . With Jameer Nelson jettisoned, ELFRID PAYTON will step in as the starter at the point. He has an enormous transition from the Sun Belt Conference, but the quickness and athleticism are there . . . EVAN FOURNIER never found consistency in Denver, but could be a valuable wing shooter on a team that needs it . . . BEN GORDON was signed with a very 'tradeable' contract in mind. The Magic are hoping he shoots well enough to draw some suitors . . . LUKE RIDNOUR is a veteran insurance policy behind Payton . . . WILLIE GREEN can be an effective second-unit player . . . ROY DEVYN MARBLE seems like a D-Leaguer. FORWARDS: The Magic brought in CHANNING FRYE to provide some floor spacing and a veteran presence, both much-needed . . . TOBIAS HARRIS will likely have to play some more small forward. He has the offensive skill set to do it, but defense will continue to be an issue . . . He can play both forward spots, and AARON GORDON should be one of the league's better defensive forwards right off the bat. But for now, his offense is limited to dunking . . . It's a big year for MAURICE HARKLESS, who has yet to establish himself as a rotation-caliber player. With Harris and Gordon capable of playing the 3, Harkless could lose major minutes . . . ANDREW NICHOLSON has a ways to go after a disappointing second season. He's likely on the outside of this rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA VUCEVIC is a cornerstone player in Orlando because he's big, and he does everything just well enough. He's not a game-changer on either side of the court . . . KYLE O'QUINN has had some good moments in garbage-time games the past two seasons. It's enough to keep him on the roster. |

*76ers-Magic Preview* =====================
By MATT BECKER STATS Editor
Philadelphia (2-23) at Orlando (10-19), 6:00 p.m. EDT
After pinning their latest loss on a listless start, the Orlando Magic acknowledged they must come out with more energy.
Despite their struggles, the Magic seemingly shouldn't have much trouble starting fast Sunday night against a Philadelphia 76ers team that routinely lets teams impose their will in the opening minutes.
Orlando (10-19) was never able to recover from a miserable first quarter Friday against Utah and ended up losing 101-94, its fifth defeat in six games. The Jazz shot 70.0 percent in the opening quarter to the Magic's 37.5 and took a 15-point lead less than two minutes into the second period. Utah bullied Orlando early, scoring 14 of its 29 first-quarter points in the paint.
"We have to be the ones who hit first," Magic center Nikola Vucevic said. "We've got to put this one behind us, go back (Saturday) at practice and work on what we did wrong. That's the only thing we can do. The next game we have to come out from the beginning more aggressive and be the aggressors."
Starting quickly certainly seems possible against the lowly 76ers (2-23), who are allowing an Eastern Conference-worst 27.4 points in the first quarter.
Philadelphia couldn't slow down a Charlotte team that came into Friday's game having lost 14 of 16, yielding 37 first-quarter points en route to a 109-91 defeat.
"I thought the start of the game influenced the rest of it," 76ers coach Brett Brown said. "They scored freely. Some of it, we give them credit. Some of it is on us."
The 76ers didn't help their situation by continuing to shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers. They had 25 on Friday and have had at least 23 in three of the last four games.
The defeat dropped the 76ers to 0-14 at home, but they won't play in Philadelphia again until 2015 as Disney on Ice pulls up residency at the Wells Fargo Center. The 76ers, who play their next seven on the road, have lost six straight and 12 of 13 in Orlando.
The Magic won this season's only meeting 91-89 on Nov. 5 as Tobias Harris sank a jumper at the buzzer. Orlando has won three straight and six of seven in the series.
Harris stayed hot Friday, making 10 of 18 shots to finish with a game-high 24 points. He is shooting 54.8 percent in his last three games.
Victor Oladipo had the hot hand for Orlando earlier in the week but suddenly can't find his shot. He has totaled nine points on 4-of-18 shooting in the last two games after averaging 16.0 points on 57.6 percent shooting - including 6 of 8 3-pointers - in his previous three.
Oladipo was sidelined for this season's first meeting with the 76ers but averaged 17.5 points against them in 2013-14 - his second-highest career mark against an East club.
Philadelphia's Tony Wroten bounced back Friday with 19 points and matched a season high with four 3-pointers after going scoreless in 30 minutes in Monday's 105-87 loss to Boston. Wroten also made four 3s against the Magic, finishing with 27 points.
