| | | UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is likely the lead guard here, though it's really by default. He doesn't have the athleticism to make a lot of plays in the lane, and will have to rely on difficult shot-making . . . He continues to steadily improve, and there could be a bigger role available for ALEC BURKS. He'll have to develop a more consistent three-point shot before he really breaks out though . . . DANTE EXUM is an electrifying athlete, but he's making an enormous jump from essentially high school ball in Australia. He could be a gem in the long run, but don't expect him to do much as a rookie . . . TOURE' MURRY will likely play some garbage minutes. FORWARDS: He ascended to the alpha role in Utah, but GORDON HAYWARD had some struggles with the extra defensive attention. He should improve somewhat, as he knows what's coming, and has added a runner to his repertoire . . . DERRICK FAVORS will play more at the 4-spot this season, and he has the strength to power his way to easy baskets. He's a potential double-double guy . . . RODNEY HOOD had an up-and-down year at Duke despite his physical gifts. He has an NBA-caliber combination of size and athleticism, but right now he's a streaky shooter with a lot of rough edges on his game . . . TREVOR BOOKER is a solid second-unit big man, a defensive bruiser and good screener on offense . . . JEREMY EVANS can dunk, but provides little else . . . STEVE NOVAK will never be a full-time player, but he's still one of the league's elite shooters. CENTERS: He was disappointing last season, but ENES KANTER still has some upside on the offensive end of the floor. How he and Favors will mesh is yet to be seen . . . RUDY GOBERT is a shot-blocking fool, but still ultra-raw | | ORLANDO: GUARDS: VICTOR OLADIPO, who will miss the first four weeks of season with a facial fracture suffered in a late October practice, will play off the ball more, allowing him to slash from the wing. It's a more natural role for him . . . With Jameer Nelson jettisoned, ELFRID PAYTON will step in as the starter at the point. He has an enormous transition from the Sun Belt Conference, but the quickness and athleticism are there . . . EVAN FOURNIER never found consistency in Denver, but could be a valuable wing shooter on a team that needs it . . . BEN GORDON was signed with a very 'tradeable' contract in mind. The Magic are hoping he shoots well enough to draw some suitors . . . LUKE RIDNOUR is a veteran insurance policy behind Payton . . . WILLIE GREEN can be an effective second-unit player . . . ROY DEVYN MARBLE seems like a D-Leaguer. FORWARDS: The Magic brought in CHANNING FRYE to provide some floor spacing and a veteran presence, both much-needed . . . TOBIAS HARRIS will likely have to play some more small forward. He has the offensive skill set to do it, but defense will continue to be an issue . . . He can play both forward spots, and AARON GORDON should be one of the league's better defensive forwards right off the bat. But for now, his offense is limited to dunking . . . It's a big year for MAURICE HARKLESS, who has yet to establish himself as a rotation-caliber player. With Harris and Gordon capable of playing the 3, Harkless could lose major minutes . . . ANDREW NICHOLSON has a ways to go after a disappointing second season. He's likely on the outside of this rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA VUCEVIC is a cornerstone player in Orlando because he's big, and he does everything just well enough. He's not a game-changer on either side of the court . . . KYLE O'QUINN has had some good moments in garbage-time games the past two seasons. It's enough to keep him on the roster. |

*Jazz-Magic Preview* ====================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Utah (7-19) at Orlando (10-18), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Orlando Magic believe their time on the road has built chemistry, but they're excited to finally have an extended stay at home.
Orlando looks to avoid a third consecutive defeat as it begins a four-game homestand against the Utah Jazz on Friday night.
The Magic (10-18) have played by far the most road games in the league, going 7-12 in such contests after falling 95-82 at Toronto on Monday and 109-92 at Boston on Wednesday.
They haven't played two straight in Orlando since Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 - the second and third games of the season - but they'll be home for the holidays and won't have to leave until visiting Charlotte on Dec. 27.
"It's the most intriguing schedule I've been around," coach Jacque Vaughn told the team's official website. "We've been tested and we've been able to pretty much stay afloat. At the same time, we've been able to get better while also taking some lumps along the way.
"Hopefully we can go home and focus on the task at hand. We have to protect our home floor."
The Magic are 3-6 in Orlando and ended a four-game home skid with a 100-99 win over Atlanta on Saturday as Tobias Harris hit a jumper as time expired.
Harris scored 17 points against Boston while Nikola Vucevic had 18 and 13 rebounds for his second double-double in three games since returning from a lower back sprain that kept him out of six games.
"It will be great to be in Orlando the next (nine) days, be in the warm weather and it will be nice to be home," Vucevic said. "But this is part of the job that we do (with the traveling). A lot of teams go through it. I do think that it's helped us."
Vucevic sat out a 98-93 win at Utah on Dec. 5, but Harris had 22 points and Victor Oladipo added 20. Derrick Favors had 21 points and 13 rebounds in that contest for the Jazz, who had lost 12 of 13 before beating Miami 105-87 on Wednesday.
Utah (7-19) is in the midst of a six-game road trip that ends at Memphis on Monday. Gordon Hayward had 29 points and seven assists while hitting 4 of 5 from 3-point range.
The Jazz tied their season high with 14 3-pointers on 25 attempts.
"I think we really picked up our energy," Hayward said. "We were a lot more active. Coach (Quin Snyder) always talks about activity and action."
Snyder wasn't happy with Utah's 20 turnovers, though he was encouraged by how his club didn't let the miscues bring it down.
"A lot of times we've let teams make runs off our mistakes. There were a few times where that happened, and we were able to respond," Snyder said. "Those are things that, as we mature as a group, we'll be better at. Some of it you learn from experience, and the sting from having that happen to you makes you more aware."
Neither squad has done a great job of creating extra possessions. The Magic (12.9) and Jazz (12.3) both rank near the bottom of the league in turnovers forced per game.
Orlando's victory earlier this month ended a seven-game losing streak to Utah.
