| |  | CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie. | | ORLANDO: GUARDS: With Dwight Howard gone, this becomes JAMEER NELSON's team on the offensive end. Injuries slowed him a year ago, but he still does a nice job creating his own scoring chances . . . ARRON AFFLALO will provide some much-needed defense on the perimeter, a huge team weakness that will be exploited in the post-Howard era. He'll be a No. 2 or 3 option on the offensive end as well . . . J.J. REDICK has a chance for a bigger role in what should be a transitional year in Orlando. He's no more of a defensive liability than Nelson . . . CHRISTIAN EYENGA was a throw-in during the Dwight Howard trade and defends well enough to earn a roster spot . . . ISHMAEL SMITH will back up Nelson once he returns from a shoulder injury . . . E'TWAUN MOORE has played well enough in the preseason to spell Nelson too. FORWARDS: HEDO TURKOGLU still has some value as a point forward, though his minutes could shrink as Orlando rebuilds . . . GLEN DAVIS shined in Howard's absence last year. He's inefficient, but aggressive and willing to throw his weight around . . . Keep an eye on ANDREW NICHOLSON; the rookie is a crafty scorer who can shoot away from the basket . . . QUENTIN RICHARDSON will chug along as an injury-prone, three-point specialist . . . AL HARRINGTON is coming off a couple knee surgeries and may not have much left in the tank . . . MOE HARKLESS is athletic, versatile, and could get a long look in the second half of the year . . . GUSTAVO AYON is a capable big body who can play some center . . . JUSTIN HARPER will be buried on the bench . . . JOSH McROBERTS is not good. CENTERS: Davis figures to see a lot of minutes at center, but NIKOLA VUCEVIC is a much better defensive option. He's limited offensively, but could start grabbing more minutes in the middle as the year goes on . . . KYLE O'QUINN is a big body who can score around the basket. He has a rough transition ahead of him as an average athlete from a small school. |

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't make any moves at the trade deadline this week, but having a healthy Kyrie Irving gives the team plenty of confidence moving forward.
Somehow, the lowly Orlando Magic have found some positives about their situation.
Cleveland goes for its first road win in this series in three seasons on Saturday night when the Magic return home with three new players - and without J.J. Redick.
The Cavaliers (17-37) obviously have plenty of room for improvement - sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference is proof of that - but Irving, among the NBA leaders with 23.7 points per game, is the star the team has been looking for since LeBron James left for Miami in 2010.
The main knock on Irving has been his durability - he missed 11 games earlier this season with a broken finger after being sidelined for 15 during his rookie of the year campaign in 2011-12 - but when healthy, he's among the top point guards in the NBA.
Fresh off winning the 3-point contest and scoring 15 points in his All-Star debut on Sunday, Irving poured in 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's 105-100 victory over New Orleans.
Cleveland had dropped three straight since ending a 10-game losing streak to the Magic with a 119-108 victory on Feb. 8.
"You can see it coming (from Irving)," coach Byron Scott said after the Cavs finished their 4-3 homestand. "He gets a little bit of a gleam in his eye. He hits one or two shots and just kind of gets going."
Irving will get his second look at the Magic this season. He was injured for a 108-104 loss at Orlando on Nov. 23, but he finished with team highs of 24 points and eight assists on Feb. 8.
Orlando (15-40) has won six straight and 11 of 13 at home against the Cavs, but the team has dropped 27 of 30 following back-to-back road losses to Dallas and Memphis.
A bigger loss may have happened between those two defeats when Redick - the team's top 3-point shooter - was dealt to Milwaukee on Thursday along with center Gustavo Ayon and Ish Smith. Orlando received Beno Udrih, rookie guard Doron Lamb and Tobias Harris in that swap, but they did not play in Friday's 88-82 loss to the Grizzlies.
Neither did Hakim Warrick, who will likely get waived after Orlando acquired him from Charlotte for big man Josh McRoberts.
"(The younger players') focus was unbelievable tonight. ... It was really, really impressive by those guys," Arron Afflalo said. "Once we get some more guys coming in to help us out a little bit, this is the way we need to play moving forward."
Udrih could see plenty of minutes on Saturday if starting point guard Jameer Nelson misses a second straight game with a strained left patellar tendon.
Nelson is averaging 18.5 points - second to Afflalo's 21.0 - with 9.5 assists against Cleveland this season.
Cavs guard Dion Waiters, the league's second-highest rookie scorer with 14.2 points per game, has a team-best 40 in those two matchups. Waiters' 25 points on Nov. 23 led all scorers.
Cleveland's last victory at Orlando was 102-93 on Nov. 11, 2009.
