KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON:
COACH: Scott Brooks (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Ish Smith (8.9 ppg with Detroit), G Bradley Beal (25.6 ppg), F Rui Hachimura (19.7 ppg with Gonzaga), F Davis Bertans (8.0 ppg with San Antonio), C Thomas Bryant (10.5 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: F Jeff Green, F Trevor Ariza, F Markieff Morris, C Dwight Howard, F Sam Dekker, F Jabari Parker, F Bobby Portis, G Tomas Satoransky.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Rui Hachimura, G Ish Smith, G-F C.J. Miles, F Moe Wagner, G-F Isaac Bonga, F Davis Bertans, G-F Admiral Schofield, G Justin Robinson, G Justin Anderson, G Isaiah Thomas.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: As Washington tries to find a way forward with a mostly new roster after losing 50 games, everyone in a Wizards uniform will be judged for his possible role in the future. The most scrutiny will fall on two players: rookie Rui Hachimura, a first-round draft pick from Gonzaga, and All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal. With Hachimura, it's about adapting to the pro game and seeing how much potential he has. With Beal, undoubtedly Washington's best player and closest thing now to a transcendent star, it's about whether he can up his level even more ... and where he will attempt to do that. Will he commit to the Wizards and will they build around him? Or will they start over even more completely by trading him?
OUTLOOK: With John Wall out for most, and maybe all, of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon, plus several other offseason injuries, and a wholesale revamping of the roster under way, new GM Tommy Sheppard knows that there is no point in aiming for any particular win total, let alone the playoffs. So instead of the sort of grand pronouncements about quantifiable goals that were so common with this club in the past, Sheppard is emphasizing the importance of development ' figuring out who can do what and who should be a part of the long-term plan. The Wizards are not going to be very good in 2019-20, but they are hoping this will be the start of moving in the right direction.
OKLAHOMA CITY: LAST SEASON: 49-33, lost 4-1 to Portland in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Billy Donovan (fifth season, 199-129).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Chris Paul (15.6 ppg with Houston), G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (10.8 with Los Angeles Clippers), F Danilo Gallinari (19.8 with Clippers), F Andre Roberson (5.0), C Steven Adams (13.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Russell Westbrook, F Paul George, G Jerami Grant, F Markieff Morris, F Patrick Patterson.
KEY ADDITIONS: Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander, Gallinari, Darius Bazley, Justin Patton, Mike Muscala. PLAYERS TO WATCH: Even though the Thunder will be widely expected to struggle this season, the backcourt of Paul and Gilgeous-Alexander ' assuming health ' is certainly good enough to help Oklahoma City contend for a postseason berth. It'll be interesting to see if Paul is energized by the trade, Gilgeous-Alexander is a budding young talent and Gallinari (coming off his best scoring season) is a veteran presence who fits very nicely into today's perimeter-based NBA game.
OUTLOOK: The Thunder went all-in on title-chasing in recent years, and now they're all-in on a reset after trading away Westbrook and George. But this isn't anywhere near a tank; there are plenty of good players on the Thunder roster, and GM Sam Presti has accumulated more than a dozen first-round picks over the next seven years to play with if he's inclined to make a big move. If they can trade Paul, which may still be an option despite the veteran's massive $44 million player option for the 2021-22 season, that would only add more pieces to Presti's plan for an OKC reload.

Because of this information, no power rating or computer score edges are posted for this game.

PREVIEW
Thunder look to boost playoff standing vs. Wizards

Chris Paul has been the unquestioned MVP for Oklahoma City this season, taking the reins after the team traded Russell Westbrook and Paul George in the offseason and helping the Thunder to what was viewed as an unlikely playoff appearance.

But close behind George has been Dennis Schroder, Paul's backup at point guard who has helped Oklahoma City's offense remain strong even when Paul goes to the bench.

Without Schroder, one of the leading contenders for Sixth Man of the Year, the Thunder have struggled when Paul is not on the court over the last two games.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the centerpiece of the trade that sent George to the Los Angeles Clippers, has been Oklahoma City's leading scorer this season but without Schroder the last three games, Gilgeous-Alexander has been forced into more time at point guard and has struggled.

Gilgeous-Alexander is shooting just 32.4 percent in the three games Schroder has missed due to the birth of his second child. Schroder is expected to miss Sunday's game against the Washington Wizards as well.

"I know he can handle it, but it's probably been a little different for him," Thunder coach Billy Donovan said of Gilgeous-Alexander. "I don't think that necessarily has anything to do with his play, because he's just a basketball player. I think the biggest thing for him is you're gonna have nights where you don't shoot the ball particularly well. He didn't shoot it well. I've always said this about him, he's a guy that can impact the game a lot of different ways on both ends of the floor."

With four games remaining and anything from fourth to seventh place still on the table, the Thunder need more from Gilgeous-Alexander.

"It's not him, it's all of us," Paul said. "We're a totally different team without Dennis. We rely on him a lot as another ball handler. There haven't been many times this season we sort of played without having a couple ball handlers on the court."

The Wizards are 0-5 in the seeding games near Orlando.

Washington was officially eliminated from postseason contention with Friday's loss to New Orleans.

It's the second consecutive season the Wizards have missed the playoffs.

"I feel bad for all of us," Washington coach Scott Brooks said. "We put a lot of time and effort into it, our guys are committed to getting better, but getting better includes winning. That's the most important element. You cannot lose -- the fact that we play 48 minutes to come away with at least one point ahead of our opponents, and we're not doing that. We're not happy. But I'm still pleased with a lot of things we're getting accomplished down here. We're lucky to be in this situation."

Sunday's game is one more, and perhaps final, opportunity to impact the playoff race.

The Wizards close the season with games against Milwaukee and Boston. The Bucks have clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference and the Celtics are likely to be locked into third place by Thursday's finale.

"We have three more games," Brooks said. "We're going to keep fighting together and keep building the future, what we need to work on."

The Wizards won the only meeting this season between the teams, although it has been more than nine months since that game. Washington beat Oklahoma City 97-85 in late October in the second game of the regular season.
