KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Rick Carlisle (12th season with Mavericks, 470-416; 18th season overall, 751-627).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Luka Doncic (21.2 ppg), G Delon Wright (12.2 with Memphis), G-F Justin Jackson (8.2), F Kristaps Porzingis (sidelined by knee injury), C Dwight Powell (10.6).
KEY LOSSES: F Dirk Nowitzki, G Devin Harris, C Salah Mejri.
KEY ADDITIONS: Wright, G Seth Curry, F Isaiah Roby.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The world will be watching the Euro pair of Doncic and Porzingis, literally. The Mavericks are headliners internationally now that the 20-year-old rookie of the year from Slovenia and the 7-foot-3 Latvian are finally getting to play together. Dallas held Porzingis out for the last two months last season after the blockbuster trade that brought him from New York, even though he could have played. Their debut together is even more intriguing since it's Dallas' first season without Nowitzki, the German superstar who retired after setting an NBA record by playing all 21 seasons with the same franchise. The biggest question is who among the role players will emerge. Keep an eye on Wright. The Mavericks liked him in the 2015 draft. AD
OUTLOOK: The Mavericks wanted to sign a significant piece in free agency after the trading-deadline addition of Porzingis, who had just been named a 2018 All-Star before the knee injury that sidelined him for 20 months. They had to settle on Wright as a restricted free agent in a sign-and-trade with Memphis, so Dallas will lean heavily on Doncic and Porzingis while trying to get back to the playoffs after missing three straight seasons. It's the longest stretch without the postseason for the franchise since it was among the worst in sports coming out of the 1990s. It won't be easy in the West. The Mavericks will exceed expectations if they contend for a playoff spot.
OKLAHOMA CITY: LAST SEASON: 49-33, lost 4-1 to Portland in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Billy Donovan (fifth season, 199-129).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Chris Paul (15.6 ppg with Houston), G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (10.8 with Los Angeles Clippers), F Danilo Gallinari (19.8 with Clippers), F Andre Roberson (5.0), C Steven Adams (13.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Russell Westbrook, F Paul George, G Jerami Grant, F Markieff Morris, F Patrick Patterson.
KEY ADDITIONS: Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander, Gallinari, Darius Bazley, Justin Patton, Mike Muscala. PLAYERS TO WATCH: Even though the Thunder will be widely expected to struggle this season, the backcourt of Paul and Gilgeous-Alexander ' assuming health ' is certainly good enough to help Oklahoma City contend for a postseason berth. It'll be interesting to see if Paul is energized by the trade, Gilgeous-Alexander is a budding young talent and Gallinari (coming off his best scoring season) is a veteran presence who fits very nicely into today's perimeter-based NBA game.
OUTLOOK: The Thunder went all-in on title-chasing in recent years, and now they're all-in on a reset after trading away Westbrook and George. But this isn't anywhere near a tank; there are plenty of good players on the Thunder roster, and GM Sam Presti has accumulated more than a dozen first-round picks over the next seven years to play with if he's inclined to make a big move. If they can trade Paul, which may still be an option despite the veteran's massive $44 million player option for the 2021-22 season, that would only add more pieces to Presti's plan for an OKC reload.

Because of this information, no power rating or computer score edges are posted for this game.

PREVIEW
Thunder put five-game win streak on line against Mavs

The last time Dallas visited Oklahoma City, the Mavericks led most of the way before Chris Paul caught fire, scoring 13 points in the final 4:31 to lift the Thunder to a come-from-behind victory on Dec. 31.

Going into Monday night's rematch between the teams in Oklahoma City, Dallas is still trying to figure out how to win tight games, especially on the road.

The Mavericks have plenty of impressive road wins -- at Milwaukee, the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver among them. But Dallas has struggled late in close games.

Of the Mavericks' 17 losses, 12 have come by five points or fewer or in overtime.

"I think we're still learning how to play under high pressure," Dallas forward Kristaps Porzingis told the Dallas Morning News after yet another close Mavericks loss Saturday night in Utah. "And that's what happens in these close games, especially on the road."

That was a sentiment echoed by Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.

"We've got a young team that's getting experience in these kinds of hostile environments," Carlisle said. "And you know we're going to learn from this and we've got to get better."

Dallas comes into Monday's game having won five of its last seven, though the wins have come by an average of 13 points.

The Thunder have won five consecutive games and 22 of their last 30.

While Dallas has struggled in close games late, Oklahoma City has thrived.

The Thunder have played more games than any team in the league in clutch situations -- games where the margin is five points or fewer in the final five minutes. Oklahoma City is 20-12 in such situations, including a handful of comebacks similar to the one against the Mavericks to end 2019.

"It's been a special team," Paul said. "Given the situation night-in, night-out, unsure of who's going to play, we just step up and we don't really care."

While Oklahoma City got Steven Adams back Saturday after the starting center had missed two games with a sprained ankle, he struggled in his 23 minutes.

He was held scoreless for just the second time this season -- the other was against Houston on Jan. 20 when Adams suffered the ankle injury in the opening two minutes and didn't return. He also had just one rebound, his fewest this season with the exception of that game against the Rockets.

The Thunder have plenty of uncertainty elsewhere in the lineup.

Forward Danilo Gallinari missed Saturday's game with a left thumb injury. It's unclear whether he'll be available Monday. Guard Terrance Ferguson has missed five consecutive games for personal seasons.

Nerlens Noel, Adams' backup in the middle, has been dealing with an ankle injury of his own but missed Saturday's game after undergoing surgery to repair a cheek fracture that occurred in Friday's win over Atlanta. Noel's timetable for return is unclear.
