KEY GAME INFORMATION
ATLANTA: LAST SEASON: 29-53, missed playoffs.
COACH: Lloyd Pierce (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Trae Young (19.1 ppg, 8.1 apg), G Kevin Huerter (9.7 ppg), F De'Andre Hunter (No. 5 overall pick), F John Collins (19.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg), C Damian Jones (5.4 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: C Dewayne Dedmon, G Kent Bazemore, F Omari Spellman
KEY ADDITIONS: Hunter, Jones, F Cam Reddish, F Jabari Parker, G Evan Turner, G Allen Crabbe, F Chandler Parsons, C Bruno Fernando.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Young and Collins are two of the NBA's top young players, while Huerter shows plenty of promise, so the key to this season will be how well they mesh with two more first-round picks, Hunter and No. 10 choice Reddish. Hunter figures to start right away, while Reddish will get plenty of playing time off the bench. Also keep an eye on Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 by the Milwaukee Bucks. While he has yet to develop into the star everyone expected, Parker is still just 24 years old and has averaged 15.1 points per game over his five-year career. The Hawks, who are focused on player development, hope they can flush out Parker's game. Finally, the Hawks will send out 42-year-old Vince Carter for his record 22nd ' and final ' season in the NBA. Carter showed last season he's still got game, but he won't get as many minutes in his last hurrah as he serves more of a coach-mentor role to all the young players.
OUTLOOK: The Hawks showed promise in Pierce's first season but this franchise is still in the midst of a major rebuilding job. Atlanta might have an outside shot at slipping into the playoffs, but would probably be better off getting another crack at the draft lottery. General manager Travis Schlenk has been acquiring over-priced players that other teams wanted to get off the books. Parsons ($25.1 million), Turner ($18.6 million) and Crabbe ($18.5 million) are in the final year of their contracts, which means 2020 is the year to really start paying attention to the Hawks.
OKLAHOMA CITY: LAST SEASON: 49-33, lost 4-1 to Portland in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Billy Donovan (fifth season, 199-129).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Chris Paul (15.6 ppg with Houston), G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (10.8 with Los Angeles Clippers), F Danilo Gallinari (19.8 with Clippers), F Andre Roberson (5.0), C Steven Adams (13.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Russell Westbrook, F Paul George, G Jerami Grant, F Markieff Morris, F Patrick Patterson.
KEY ADDITIONS: Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander, Gallinari, Darius Bazley, Justin Patton, Mike Muscala. PLAYERS TO WATCH: Even though the Thunder will be widely expected to struggle this season, the backcourt of Paul and Gilgeous-Alexander ' assuming health ' is certainly good enough to help Oklahoma City contend for a postseason berth. It'll be interesting to see if Paul is energized by the trade, Gilgeous-Alexander is a budding young talent and Gallinari (coming off his best scoring season) is a veteran presence who fits very nicely into today's perimeter-based NBA game.
OUTLOOK: The Thunder went all-in on title-chasing in recent years, and now they're all-in on a reset after trading away Westbrook and George. But this isn't anywhere near a tank; there are plenty of good players on the Thunder roster, and GM Sam Presti has accumulated more than a dozen first-round picks over the next seven years to play with if he's inclined to make a big move. If they can trade Paul, which may still be an option despite the veteran's massive $44 million player option for the 2021-22 season, that would only add more pieces to Presti's plan for an OKC reload.

Because of this information, no power rating or computer score edges are posted for this game.

PREVIEW
Hawks, Thunder both looking to get healthy

The Oklahoma City Thunder and Atlanta Hawks both have had to learn how to play without key players recently.

That might be the case again Friday, when the teams meet in Oklahoma City.

For the Thunder, center Steven Adams and small forward Terrance Ferguson have been out recently. Adams' absence has been due to an ankle injury suffered early in Monday's win in Houston. His backup, Nerlens Noel, has been battling an ankle injury on and off since early in the month.

Noel played in Wednesday's win in Orlando but still is hampered by the injury.

Without as much depth in the middle, the Thunder have had to regularly rely on Mike Muscala.

"Obviously when Steven's playing, he's more of an around-the-basket guy and so is Nerlens," Oklahoma City point guard Chris Paul said. "Mike is a stretch-the-court kind of guy so when he plays, it's great because he gives us a different dynamic."

Muscala was hit all four tries from behind the 3-point line in Wednesday's victory.

The Hawks could be without second-year point guard Trae Young on Friday.

Young, who entered Thursday in the top five in the NBA in scoring (29.2 points per game) and assists (8.6), sat out Wednesday's win over the Los Angeles Clippers because of a right thigh contusion he suffered in Monday's loss to Toronto.

Atlanta fell behind early, trailing by as many as 21 points in the second quarter before slowly climbing back.

It was Atlanta's first win without Young this season. The Hawks had lost each of the first three games he sat out.

While Young has been such a focal point of Atlanta's offense, either creating for himself or facilitating for others, the Hawks had to figure out how to be successful without him against the Clippers.

"I hope this is a momentum builder," Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce said. "I hope it's an understanding of how we have to play from start to finish."

Young is listed as questionable for Friday's game, though he participated in Thursday's practice.

Young grew up in Norman, Okla., just south of Oklahoma City.

In his lone appearance in his home state as a rookie, Young was just four of 15 from the field in a 15-point loss last season.

If Young does play, Ferguson's status figures to be magnified. Ferguson has been an excellent perimeter defender this season, but he has missed the last three games for personal reasons and has missed nine games overall.

The Hawks announced Thursday that forward Chandler Parsons, who was involved in an automobile accident Jan. 15 that left him with a concussion and other injuries, was still in the first stage of the league's concussion protocol and that Parsons would return home to California to continue his recovery.

This is the first meeting of the season between the teams. They split last season's two games.
