KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: A huge upgrade over Raymond Felton, JOSE CALDERON's shooting and low turnover rate make him a good fit in the triangle offense. Defense will be an issue . . . His shot selection will always be laughable, but J.R. SMITH will still have the occasional blow-up game . . . IMAN SHUMPERT never looked right last season. He won't get bumped from the rotation, but he's in danger of getting just part-time minutes . . . He'll defend, and if his strong shooting as a rookie wasn't a fluke, TIM HARDAWAY JR. will push his way into the starting five . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a poor man's Calderon . . . SHANE LARKIN has some long-term upside, but is unlikely to contribute this season. FORWARDS: The triangle offense should play to CARMELO ANTHONY's strengths and open things up a bit more than the iso-heavy system they ran under Mike Woodson. He'll be in the running for another scoring title . . . It's another year of ANDREA BARGNANI. The Knicks are too thin to not play him, but his defense is atrocious and he hasn't shot it well in years . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE's monster deal expires after this season, and a trade is a possibility. In a best-case scenario, he can be effective for 20 minutes or so per night . . . Second-rounder CLEANTHONY EARLY has a chance to break into this rotation. He'll defend and pick up some hustle points . . . QUINCY ACY and TRAVIS OUTLAW will provide some much needed depth and energy for a team that can sometimes be lackadaisical on the court. CENTERS: With Tyson Chandler gone, it will be up to SAMUEL DALEMBERT to pick up the defensive slack. He's a capable rim protector and could be in for as much playing time as he's gotten in years . . . JASON SMITH is another defensive-minded big man. He's good in space but is not a polished shot blocker . . . COLE ALDRICH was good enough late last season to earn a bench spot in the 2014-15 campaign.
OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: Everything should be a full go with RUSSELL WESTBROOK. His attacking style of play will always carry some injury risk, but he hasn't lost any explosiveness to this point . . . REGGIE JACKSON wants to start, but it's a question of whether the Thunder can survive defensively with him and Westbrook in a small backcourt. Jackson is certainly their second-best offensive guard . . . ANTHONY MORROW can flat-out shoot. He can't do anything else, but that floor spacing might be enough to get him 20 minutes per night . . . If the light doesn't turn on, JEREMY LAMB will be on the outside of this rotation. FORWARDS: Once he returns from his foot injury in late November, it should be the same old story for KEVIN DURANT, the reigning NBA MVP . . . He still struggles defensively in space, but SERGE IBAKA will be right there among the league leaders in blocks again. Throw in a reliable mid-range game, and more offensive responsibility with Durant out, and he's a fringe All-Star . . . NICK COLLISON takes charges, but doesn't do much else . . . Rookie MITCH McGARY could be pushing Collison for minutes by midseason . . . ANDRE ROBERSON could get another handful of starts as a defensive presence on the wing, but he rarely plays 20-plus minutes . . . PERRY JONES is on the fringe of this roster. CENTERS: Is this it? Could this be the season that the Thunder finally stop playing KENDRICK PERKINS? . . . STEVEN ADAMS came on strong late last season and is probably already better than Perk. He can defend and moves the ball offensively.

(UPDATES with Westbrook returning, Durant out)

*Knicks-Thunder Preview* ========================

By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor

New York (4-12) at Oklahoma City (4-12), 8:00 p.m. EDT

A trip to the NBA Finals, two appearances in the Western Conference finals and 166 victories over the previous three seasons is not the kind of recent history fans typically find with a team that loses 12 of its first 16 games.

As if there were any doubt that it begins and ends for the Oklahoma City Thunder with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Though Durant isn't yet ready to make his season debut, Westbrook will return Friday night against the New York Knicks, who may again be without their top player as they try to salvage a win on a three-game trip.

Durant, the reigning league MVP, has been out the entire season with a stress fracture in his right foot, while Westbrook played two games before a broken hand put him on the shelf for an extended period.

The All-Star tandem finally practiced together this week, and early Friday the Thunder revealed that Westbrook would return against the Knicks.

Durant is still out, and Carmelo Anthony also may be on the sidelines for New York due to back spasms.

"I feel sore, stiff," Anthony told the Knicks' official website. "It's gotten a little better, but (Wednesday) was the first day that I actually got to walk around a little bit.

"I just don't know how long I'll be out," he added.

It's been a rough go of it for the Thunder (4-12) without Westbrook and Durant, who entering this season had played more minutes than anyone since 2007. Even with the 16 games he's missed, Durant has been surpassed by only LeBron James for minutes played in that span - and only by a margin of 28.

The next closest to James and Durant is Joe Johnson, who is roughly 1,000 behind.

Losing the heavy workload of Durant and Westbrook, who combined for an average of 53.8 points last season, has whittled an offense that scored 106.2 per game in 2013-14 down to 90.2 this season - better than only winless Philadelphia (89.9).

Oklahoma City has won when it has managed to score, going 3-1 when reaching 100 or more points. The defense, meanwhile, has been outstanding, ranking fourth in the league in both points per game (94.1) and field-goal percentage (42.5).

Westbrook could also help Oklahoma City win back-to-back games for the first time this season after a 97-82 win over Utah on Wednesday ended a six-game losing streak.

New York (4-12) fought hard but has dropped the first two on its trip after a 109-102 overtime loss at Dallas on Wednesday extended its road skid to seven.

The Knicks had their most balanced effort of the season without Anthony, who is averaging 23.2 points. New York had six players score in double figures, led by a breakout game from point guard Jose Calderon, who had 21.

Calderon had a combined 12 points in his first two games since returning from injury.

The Knicks, who have lost every away game since winning their first at Cleveland on Oct. 30, have beaten only the 76ers over their last five overall.

The Thunder have won eight of 11 meetings with New York since the franchise relocated in 2008 - including the most recent in Oklahoma City, 112-110 on Feb. 9 behind Durant's 41 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
