|
| | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS slides into the 2-guard spot vacated by O.J. Mayo. He should benefit from the attention Dirk Nowitzki gets and from playing alongside a pure point guard . . . JOSE CALDERON is a defensive liability, but he should have the Mavs' offense running more smoothly . . . VINCE CARTER has become one of the league's better sixth men. He'll see plenty of minutes for a team that figures to frequently play small ball . . . When healthy, DEVIN HARRIS should be the defensive side of a platoon with Calderon . . . Israeli star GAL MEKEL should be able to help at both guard spots on a part-time basis . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON has yet to prove he can do anything with second-unit minutes . . . After breaking his foot, SHANE LARKIN is looking at a redshirt year. FORWARDS: Last season was a bit of a lost season for DIRK NOWITZKI, who missed the beginning of the year after knee surgery and didn't get going until late. Health, as well as the arrival of a true point guard in Jose Calderon, should allow him to bounce back nicely . . . SHAWN MARION had a nice resurgence last season, and he should have at least one good season left as he plays for another contract . . . JAE CROWDER has a chance to establish himself as the heir apparent to Marion. He's a hustle guy right now, and whether he can be more will depend on whether he develops his jump shot . . . RICKY LEDO was a favorite NBA draft sleeper for many experts. But while the skilled wing has NBA talent, he also has a reputation for being a bad seed. Ledo is almost certainly headed to the D-League for now. CENTERS: SAMUEL DALEMBERT is a sad consolation prize in the Dwight Howard derby. He'll likely step in as a starter . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT has never been able to overcome injuries. He could end up splitting time with Dalembert . . . DEJUAN BLAIR will provide energy and offense at the four and five . . . BERNARD JAMES should continue to develop as a rim protector. | | OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: RUSSELL WESTBROOK is going to likely miss the first 4-to-6 weeks of the regular season after getting another procedure done on Oct. 1 to reduce swelling on his knee. It will probably take him some time to get rid of the rust of not playing all summer . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA should play even more minutes this season with Kevin Martin gone. He has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . REGGIE JACKSON could end up absorbing a lot of the minutes that went to James Harden two years ago and Martin last season. But he's nowhere near the offensive threat . . . JEREMY LAMB will push Jackson for that sixth-man role. He's dominated against lesser competition . . . DEREK FISHER will get minutes as a player/coach. FORWARDS: KEVIN DURANT may have to take on an even bigger role in the regular season as the Thunder try to replace Kevin Martin's offensive production. Either way, he's the MVP among the league's non-LeBrons . . . SERGE IBAKA has had his postseason issues and still struggles defensively outside of rim protection, but he has added value with his mid-range shooting . . . NICK COLLISON's biggest skill is his ability to take charges. He'll continue to log big minutes at the four and five as a glue guy . . . One of two very raw young players, PERRY JONES III and ANDRE ROBERSON, has a chance for playing time on a thin team. CENTERS: KENDRICK PERKINS was a disaster in last year's postseason, but still provides the kind of low-post muscle the Thunder look for . . . Rookie STEVEN ADAMS could take over for Perkins down the road, but he's too raw to make an impact this year . . . HASHEEM THABEET fills out the final roster spot. |

*Mavericks-Thunder Preview* ===========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
Dallas (2-1) at Oklahoma City (2-1), 9:30 p.m. EDT
Even though Russell Westbrook may have to shed some rust after a long layoff, the Oklahoma City Thunder know they're much better off just having their star point guard in the lineup.
Oklahoma City looks to get into more of a groove Wednesday night as it seeks an 11th straight victory over the visiting Dallas Mavericks.
The Thunder (2-1) tied for second in the league with a 48.1 field-goal percentage last season, but they shot just 37.8 percent while splitting their first two contests as Westbrook sat out.
Westbrook, though, returned weeks ahead of schedule from a lateral meniscus tear suffered in the second game of last season's playoffs and scored 21 points while dishing out seven assists to help Oklahoma City earn a 103-96 win over Phoenix on Sunday.
Westbrook shot only 5 of 16 from the field and the Thunder finished 2 of 18 from 3-point range, but he knows everything won't fall into place immediately.
"I just missed some easy ones, but that will come," Westbrook said. "I'm able to do what I want. I could be better but that's all right. That's expected. I'm not expected to come back and be bionic man. I'm just going to work my way through it."
Most everyone struggled with their shot except Kevin Durant, who had 33 points and 10 rebounds while hitting 10 of 19 from the field.
"Obviously, we've got to shoot the ball much better," coach Scott Brooks said. "They're getting good looks. They're going to fall."
Brooks, though, knows his team is in better hands with Westbrook running the show.
"There are two things that he does at a high level," Brooks said. "He's a winner. It's not always going to be perfect, but he plays with everything he has every single night. The second thing is leadership. It's taken him some time to get that. Now he is our leader."
Westbrook has averaged 25.2 points during the Thunder's winning streak against Dallas, which includes a sweep in the first round of the 2012 playoffs.
Durant averaged 35.5 points, including a career-high 52 on Jan. 18, last season against the Mavericks, who beat the Los Angeles Lakers 123-104 on Tuesday for their second straight win.
Dallas led by as many as 30 before resting most of their starters in the fourth. Monta Ellis led seven players in double figures with 30 points and added nine assists while shooting 11 of 14 from the field.
The Mavericks shot 52.1 percent overall and hit 13 of 27 from 3-point range.
"Monta Ellis was fantastic (in) all aspects of the game," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He defended, he made plays at the rim, he was under control, he hit midrange shots, he hit guys cutting to the basket."
It marked the second time in his four-game Dallas tenure that Ellis has finished with at least 30 points and eight assists.
"The lane was wide open, so I just attacked, and when they came over, I passed the ball and that's what we wanted," Ellis said. "Me being aggressive opened everything else up.'"
Ellis, though, shot only 21.9 percent while averaging 6.7 points in his last three games for Milwaukee against Oklahoma City, which has won six straight home meetings with Dallas.
