| | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD is for real, an elite shooter and a natural running the pick-and-roll. Though we're a little worried about what will happen if pick-and-pop partner LaMarcus Aldridge is dealt sometime this season . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS will be battling for playing time with Portland loading up on wings . . . C.J. MCCOLLUM can play either guard spot, but primarily he's a scorer and a potentially elite shooter. He is, however, out a few months with a foot fracture. . . MO WILLIAMS will provide the Blazers with a veteran guard presence who is more than capable of lighting it up on any given night. He is, however, a major defensive liability'If he straightens out his jumper, WILL BARTON could end up being a solid second-unit player . . . EARL WATSON gives them a much more reliable back-up point guard than Ronnie Price was . . . Sharpshooter ALLEN CRABBE will likely find himself in the D-League early on. FORWARDS: LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE's name will be in trade rumors all season, but it won't affect his role as this team's No. 1 option . . . NICOLAS BATUM will continue to do a little bit of everything, playing point forward to allow Lillard to play off the ball at times, and serving as a dangerous three-point shooter . . . DORELL WRIGHT can lock opponents down when he wants to. He'll push Wesley Matthews for minutes . . . Portland will be the next team to try to squeeze production out of 2012 No. 5 pick THOMAS ROBINSON. After Sacramento and Houston both gave up on him almost immediately, Robinson in danger of falling off the NBA map . . . VICTOR CLAVER provides some energy as a second-unit bit player . . . JOEL FREELAND has six fouls to give. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ will be a better fit alongside Aldridge than J.J. Hickson was. Lopez isn't skilled, but he can take some defensive responsibilities away from Aldridge . . . MEYERS LEONARD is, as expected, still a work in progress. He's enormous and there's some raw talent, but he too often looks lost. | | NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON is still the best the Knicks can do at point guard. With his shortcomings in the half court, head coach Mike Woodson's desire to go up-tempo should play to Felton's skill set a little bit better . . . IMAN SHUMPERT should be ready for a slightly bigger role. He's their best perimeter defender and a good enough spot-up shooter to play off Carmelo Anthony . . . J.R. SMITH's offseason knee surgery is a bit of a concern, as is the fact that he's no longer in a contract year. Still, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year should light it up on many nights . . . PABLO PRIGIONI will be Felton's primary back-up. He disappears at times, but can at least knock down threes . . . BENO UDRIH will provide quality backup minutes after another solid year seeing big minutes in Orlando'TIM HARDAWAY JR. is likely looking at a redshirt year in 2013-14. FORWARDS: Last year was CARMELO ANTHONY's dream offense, with lots of isolation plays. With his improved three-point shot, Melo should make a run at a second-straight scoring title . . . ANDREA BARGNANI might start by default, but he's more suited to a part-time role as a one-dimensional floor spacer . . . Expect to see a lot of lineups with either Anthony or METTA WORLD PEACE at the four. MWP is still good enough defensively to justify his erratic shot selection . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE will likely be limited to a part-time role due to injuries. He'll try to re-invent himself as a second-unit scorer . . . KENYON MARTIN will be counted on to play some four and five off the bench . . . Athletic rookie C.J. LESLIE is ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER will be relied on heavily on the glass for what could be the weakest rebounding team in the NBA. The Knicks would like to keep his regular-season minutes down, but they may be forced to play him a lot if they're going to get home court in a first-round playoff series . . . The Knicks will try to develop JEREMY TYLER into a useful No. 2 center. |

*Trail Blazers-Knicks Preview* ==============================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Portland (34-14) at New York (19-29), 8:00 p.m. EDT
With their previously high-scoring offense in the midst of a slump, the Portland Trail Blazers' outstanding start seems like a distant memory.
Following a loss to the NBA's worst team, the same could be said of the New York Knicks' recent bid to turn things around.
The Trail Blazers will try to avoid their fifth straight road loss while handing Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks their third defeat in a row Wednesday night.
Though All-Stars Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge combined for 45 points, Portland (34-14) failed to score more than 90 for the third time in four games in a 100-90 loss at Washington on Monday.
The Blazers had a 61.0 field-goal percentage in the first half before shooting 6 for 17 while getting outscored 26-14 in the third quarter.
Since averaging 109.6 points and hitting 39.7 percent from 3-point range during a 31-9 start, the league's highest-scoring team has put up 100.0 per game with a 28.8 shooting percentage from beyond the arc while losing five of eight.
Lillard and Wesley Matthews rank among the league leaders in 3-pointers, but they were a combined 3 for 13 as the Blazers missed 14 of 19 from long range Monday.
"When you aren't having a great night, defensively, you have to find a way to at least make shots," said Lillard, who has averaged 23.3 points on 50.9 percent shooting in three meetings with the Knicks. "When you are making shots, you have to find a way to get it done, defensively."
The Blazers haven't done much of either on the road, dropping a season-worst four straight by an average of 11.5 points. They'll attempt to end that skid with their sixth win in eight visits to Madison Square Garden.
After a four-game winning streak that followed a five-game slide, the Knicks (19-29) are hoping to end another losing streak while bouncing back from a 101-98 loss at lowly Milwaukee on Monday.
Anthony and J.R. Smith combined for 66 points while making 11 of 21 from 3-point range, but Brandon Knight sank a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left to give the Bucks only their ninth win of the season.
"There are no freebies in the NBA," center Tyson Chandler said. "You can lose on any night to any team if you don't play well."
New York has totaled 189 points despite shooting 26 for 60 (43.3 percent) from beyond the arc in consecutive losses after scoring 116.5 per game during its winning streak.
Anthony has averaged 35.3 points while shooting 20 for 42 from 3-point range over his last six games, and he's scored a combined 79 in his last two against the Blazers.
The seven-time All-Star had 34 points and 15 rebounds in a 102-91 loss at Portland on Nov. 25. Lillard and Nicolas Batum led the Blazers with 23 points apiece, while Aldridge added 18 points and 14 boards.
Smith, who scored just six in that contest, has averaged 18.8 points and made 29 of 58 from 3 in his last nine games.
Anthony scored 45 and Smith added 28 in a 105-100 loss in the most recent matchup in New York on Jan. 1, 2013. Lillard, Batum and Aldridge combined for 66 points.
Batum has averaged 21.7 points during Portland's three-game winning streak in this series.
