KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: GUARDS: JAMES HARDEN is a franchise player, and as one of the league's elite pick-and-roll threats, he and Dwight Howard have the potential to be dominant . . . Trade rumors will continue to circle JEREMY LIN, who isn't an off-the-ball threat to fit alongside Harden. He is, however, clearly a starting-caliber point guard . . . PATRICK BEVERLEY really shined in back-up minutes last year, and he's part of the reason that Lin is expendable. He's strong defensively, and he proved capable of running the second unit. He'll be one of the league's top back-up PGs if Lin stays . . . Rookie combo guard ISAIAH CANAAN will be developed as a spot-up shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a roster filler . . . AARON BROOKS is around as a reclamation project . . . RONNIE BREWER provides a much-needed athletic perimeter defender. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS is an elite role player. He entered the league with the reputation as a pure athlete, but it's his ability to knock down the corner three that's made him so valuable in Houston . . . GREG SMITH looks like another great find for the Rockets. He's an athletic banger who can allow Dwight Howard to roam a bit on defense . . . DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS showed flashes as a rookie, but the stretch four looks like a situational role player for the foreseeable future . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA will lend a veteran presence to the second unit . . . Versatile TERRENCE JONES could be in for more minutes as the Rockets look for the right role players . . . OMRI CASSPI might be getting his last chance at the NBA. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD should be much happier in Houston, though the Rockets still have to convince him that he can dominate as a pick-and-roll player. He should make everyone forget about his season with the Lakers . . . The fact is OMER ASIK just doesn't fit alongside Howard. But if he stays somewhat happy in Houston, he could be a valuable second-unit player . . . MARCUS CAMBY has latched on to chase a ring.
NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON is still the best the Knicks can do at point guard. With his shortcomings in the half court, head coach Mike Woodson's desire to go up-tempo should play to Felton's skill set a little bit better . . . IMAN SHUMPERT should be ready for a slightly bigger role. He's their best perimeter defender and a good enough spot-up shooter to play off Carmelo Anthony . . . J.R. SMITH's offseason knee surgery is a bit of a concern, as is the fact that he's no longer in a contract year. Still, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year should light it up on many nights . . . PABLO PRIGIONI will be Felton's primary back-up. He disappears at times, but can at least knock down threes . . . BENO UDRIH will provide quality backup minutes after another solid year seeing big minutes in Orlando'TIM HARDAWAY JR. is likely looking at a redshirt year in 2013-14. FORWARDS: Last year was CARMELO ANTHONY's dream offense, with lots of isolation plays. With his improved three-point shot, Melo should make a run at a second-straight scoring title . . . ANDREA BARGNANI might start by default, but he's more suited to a part-time role as a one-dimensional floor spacer . . . Expect to see a lot of lineups with either Anthony or METTA WORLD PEACE at the four. MWP is still good enough defensively to justify his erratic shot selection . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE will likely be limited to a part-time role due to injuries. He'll try to re-invent himself as a second-unit scorer . . . KENYON MARTIN will be counted on to play some four and five off the bench . . . Athletic rookie C.J. LESLIE is ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER will be relied on heavily on the glass for what could be the weakest rebounding team in the NBA. The Knicks would like to keep his regular-season minutes down, but they may be forced to play him a lot if they're going to get home court in a first-round playoff series . . . The Knicks will try to develop JEREMY TYLER into a useful No. 2 center.

*Rockets-Knicks Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Houston (5-3) at New York (2-4), 8:00 p.m. EDT

While they've struggled defensively for most of the season, the Houston Rockets haven't been as productive on the offensive end during their recent funk.

Considering the way former Knick Jeremy Lin has been playing, the visiting Rockets might not need James Harden to turn things around Thursday night when they seek their 16th win in 17 games against New York.

Since averaging 109.4 points on 49.9-percent shooting during a 4-1 start, Houston (5-4) has scored 104.8 per game and shot 43.0 percent while dropping three of its last four - a stretch that includes three overtime periods.

It certainly hasn't helped that the Rockets have allowed an average of 111.8 points over their last six games.

With Harden out because of a bruised foot, Lin stepped up with season highs of 34 points and 12 assists in Wednesday's 123-117 overtime loss at Philadelphia.

The Rockets were hurting without Harden - a top-five scorer at 24.9 points per game - when they missed 10 straight shots from late in regulation into overtime before Dwight Howard's three-point play tied it with 2:21 left.

Harden, whose foot has bothered him all season, will likely be a game-time decision Thursday. The high-scoring guard totaled 61 points to help the Rockets win both meetings with the Knicks (3-4) last season by a combined 41 points.

If Harden is unable to go, Lin figures to get another start after hitting a career-high nine 3-pointers on 15 attempts.

"It was my worst defensive game of the season," Lin said after Philadelphia's starting backcourt combined for 54 points. "Tomorrow has to be my best defensive game of the season."

During the 2011-12 season, "Linsanity" became an instant sensation when he knocked down several big shots and averaged 18.2 points in 25 starts for the Knicks. In his last two games, Lin has recaptured some of that magic by scoring 65 on 20-of-36 shooting, though he's also turned the ball over 13 times.

This will be his second return to New York after he finished with 22 points and nine assists in Houston's 109-96 win Dec. 17, 2012.

Carmelo Anthony, who missed that contest due to a sprained left ankle, helped the Knicks bounce back from a 31-point loss to San Antonio on Sunday with a team-high 25 points in Wednesday's 95-91 win at Atlanta.

"Oh, man, it was a great way to kind of get back on track," Anthony said after shooting just 9-of-25 from the field. "Any time you can win on the road, that's always a big win."

Although Anthony has a career-low 41.3 shooting percentage this season, he's averaging 34.8 points on 47.9 percent shooting in his last seven games against the Rockets.

The Knicks are hoping to avoid their fourth straight loss at home, where they haven't won since beating Milwaukee in the season opener. They've been outscored by an average of 15.0 points during the home skid while allowing 110.3 points per game.

With Tyson Chandler out due to a non-displaced fracture of his right fibula, the Knicks could have their hands full with Howard. The star center, who ranks second in the NBA with 14.9 rebounds per game, has 41 points and 39 rebounds in his last two.

The Rockets have won eight of their last nine games at Madison Square Garden.
