| |  | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. | | NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38. |

The New York Knicks are the new owners of the NBA's longest active winning streak and have their sights set on making noise in the playoffs as one of the Eastern Conference's top seeds.
That outlook can't be shared by the league-worst Charlotte Bobcats, though they're working just as hard to achieve their rather modest goal of climbing out of the cellar.
New York seeks a seventh consecutive victory and fifth straight over Charlotte when these teams meet Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks (44-26) have bounced back from a season worst-tying four-game skid and extended their run with a 108-101 victory over Memphis on Wednesday to open a three-game homestand.
New York is averaging 102.2 points during the winning streak compared to 81.8 during its skid, and it now owns the league's longest current run after Miami's 27-game win streak ended at Chicago on Wednesday.
"We had to put (the losing streak) behind us," said Iman Shumpert, who scored 16 points against Memphis. "Right now we're rolling and we're going to keep rolling going into the playoffs. We knew once we got a win and strung a couple together we'd get that (confidence) back."
The Knicks lead Brooklyn by 2 1/2 games for first place in the Atlantic Division and are battling Indiana for the East's second seed.
"It's coming down the stretch run and every game is important," coach Mike Woodson said. "We're playing that way, and that's how it should be at this point in the season. We're trying to stay at the top of our division and we're in the running for the (No. 2 seed). There's a lot of things at stake and our guys are putting forth the energy and it's converting to wins."
J.R. Smith has been one of the catalysts lately, following a 32-point performance in Tuesday's 100-85 victory at Boston with 35 on Wednesday. He's averaging 24.7 points during the winning streak.
"That's the J.R. we all know about," Carmelo Anthony said. "He's locked in and extremely focused on helping his team win basketball games. That's what we need from him."
With Anthony injured toward the end of the Dec. 5 meeting with the Bobcats, Smith nailed a fadeaway jumper as time expired to give the Knicks a 100-98 road victory.
It marked their eighth win in 10 matchups against Charlotte (17-54), which is hoping to avoid finishing with the NBA's worst record for the second straight season.
The Bobcats went 7-59 in the 2011-12 lockout-shortened campaign, resulting in a .106 winning percentage that set a league record for futility. With that dubious mark still etched in their minds, they've gone 3-2 over their last five and defeated Orlando 114-108 on Wednesday.
Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson each scored 34 points for Charlotte, which owns the league's worst record by one-half game behind the Magic.
"You never want to be seen as the worst team, regardless of how your season has gone," Henderson said. "Last year we were the undisputed worst team."
Walker, averaging 26.3 points over his last three, is looking ahead rather than in the past.
"We want to finish off this season strong and get some confidence so we know what we can do for next season," said Walker, who scored 25 points in the first matchup with New York. "We have to start building."
The Knicks have won 10 of 14 all-time meetings at Madison Square Garden.
