| |  | SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: MARCUS THORNTON is the only one guaranteed a consistent role on the perimeter . . . ISAIAH THOMAS was the story of the second half for the Kings. He can fill up the box score, but at 5-foot-9 (at best) he's too much of a defensive liability and not a point guard . . . AARON BROOKS is the most talented guard on this team. He's had attitude problems in the past, but he could, and should, lead this team . . . Now that he remained in Sacto, TYREKE EVANS will be playing off the ball at the three against his wishes . . . The Kings will keep on trying to unload JOHN SALMONS, who's not a useful NBA player . . . JIMMER FREDETTE should have a role off the bench, but his ball-handling is not where it has to be for an NBA point guard . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA's chance seems to have passed him by. FORWARDS: THOMAS ROBINSON should emerge as a starter early in his rookie year. He has his flaws on both ends of the floor, but he brings energy and doesn't need a lot of touches to get his points . . . Even if Robinson knocks him to the bench, JASON THOMPSON should play the five at times and see close to starter's minutes . . . JAMES JOHNSON should also play big minutes soon considering his ability to make positive contributions without a lot of touches . . . CHUCK HAYES should continue to play second-unit minutes as a glue guy . . . TRAVIS OUTLAW has regressed to the point that he's lucky to have a roster spot . . . TYLER HONEYCUTT has an intriguing skill set as a defensive-minded point forward, but he's likely ticketed for the D-League again. CENTERS: DeMARCUS COUSINS came on strong late last season. There's no doubt he has All-Star potential, but between his awful shot selection and occasional attitude problems, he just hasn't lived up to his potential. After Team USA passed on him this summer because of reported maturity problems, he might still not get it. | | NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38. |

*Kings-Knicks Preview* ======================

The New York Knicks are still one of the NBA's better scoring teams, but they've been leaning a little more heavily on their defense in recent weeks - and the success is hard to argue with.
The Sacramento Kings' already mediocre offense, meanwhile, is mired in a slump with the team's top scorer struggling to get back on track.
New York seeks a fourth straight win and a measure of revenge against the Kings when the teams meet Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks (29-15) rank in the top 10 at 100.7 points per game, but have looked like an improved defensive unit while winning three straight and six of eight.
Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 25 points in a 96-86 home win against Milwaukee on Friday, but New York won on the strength of its defense tightening up in the second half. The Bucks had 53 points in the first half but were limited to 33 in the final 24 minutes, including 13 in the fourth quarter.
The Knicks have held their last eight opponents to 91.5 ppg.
"Offensively we're going to miss shots, they're going to make shots, but if we can buckle down and do what we've been doing these last couple of weeks, we'll be fine," said Anthony, the league's second-leading scorer at 29.1 per contest.
After starting slow initially after his return, Amare Stoudemire has seemingly found a groove of late. He averaged 9.0 points on 43.5 percent field-goal shooting in his first six games after sitting out New York's first 30 contests recovering from knee surgery. In eight games since, he's averaging 16.0 points while shooting 62.7 percent from the field.
The Knicks received a slight scare Friday when point guard Raymond Felton - who missed 12 games earlier this season with a fractured finger on his right hand - bumped the same hand against a Bucks player and left the game temporarily before returning.
"It was a lot of pain," said Felton, averaging 15.4 points and a team-high 6.4 assists. "I went away when I put some ice on it. I think I'm OK."
Sacramento (17-31) pulled out a 106-105 win over the Knicks on Dec. 28 with James Johnson's 3-pointer at the buzzer proving decisive. New York did, however, erase a 27-point deficit despite playing without Anthony, Stoudemire and Felton, all of whom sat out with injuries.
The Kings have dropped two in a row and six of seven after an 89-80 loss at Philadelphia on Friday - two nights removed from being held to 81 in a defeat at Boston. Sacramento continues to struggle mightily on the road, going 5-18 compared to a 12-12 home record.
Tyreke Evans scored a season-high 29 points against the 76ers, Isaiah Thomas added 24, and DeMarcus Cousins had his 20th double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. But they didn't get much help, with only four other Kings combining for 15 points.
"We've got great talent, we know we can play with anybody," said Evans, scoring 14.9 ppg. "We've just got to be ready every night."
Cousins - one of nine players in the NBA averaging a double-double with 17.3 points and 10.1 rebounds - is putting up 11.5 ppg on just 39.7 percent shooting over his last six games.
The Knicks ended a four-game home losing streak to the Kings with a 100-85 win on Feb. 15.
