| | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON has emerged as the closest thing to a No. 1 option on this team, and despite his size, he's proven capable of playing full-time minutes. He'll continue to post big numbers in an up-tempo system that suits him perfectly . . . ANDRE MILLER will both back up Lawson and share the court with him at times (though Andre Iguodala figures to play a lot of two this season). The steady veteran is one of the league's most underrated sixth men . . . It's a bit surprising that EVAN FOURNIER is making the jump to the NBA this year. His size and skill combo will be nice on the wing one day, but he's unlikely to contribute this year . . . JULYAN STONE will be out until January after offseason hip surgery, but he should be Lawson's main backup upon his return. FORWARDS: DANILO GALLINARI is their most complete offensive player. If healthy, he's capable of being a 20-PPG scorer . . . ANDRE IGUODALA should enjoy the much faster pace Denver plays at. He'll see full-time minutes between both wing spots . . . KENNETH FARIED isn't a skilled big, but he's a high-energy guy who can get his own points off offensive rebounds . . . WILSON CHANDLER could end up leading their second unit in minutes and points . . . COREY BREWER is a front office favorite. He'll stay in the rotation as a defensive presence/glue guy . . . JORDAN HAMILTON could break into the rotation. He's one-dimensional, but has the offensive skills . . . Denver will try to solve the ANTHONY RANDOLPH riddle. Don't expect it to happen this year. CENTERS: Denver is all-in on internet punchline JaVALE McGEE. They'll give the athletic 7-footer every chance to become the star they think he can be. Whether the flaky McGee can capitalize is questionable . . . TIMOFEY MOZGOV is one of the NBA's best screeners, but his touches will be limited . . . KOSTA KOUFOS has quietly developed into a usable rotation player, but he might be squeezed out of minutes. | | NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38. |

*Nuggets-Knicks Preview* ========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Denver (10-10) at New York (14-4), 7:30 p.m. EDT
Carmelo Anthony may have a little motivation to be back on the court.
The New York Knicks could surely use him after their latest performance.
Coming off their worst offensive performance of the season, the Knicks hope to have Anthony available Sunday night when they face the Denver Nuggets, the superstar forward's former team.
Anthony has missed two games with a lacerated middle finger on his left hand, an injury that has caused him difficulty catching passes. It has left New York (14-5) without the league's third-leading scorer at 26.4 points per game.
The Knicks did just fine without him Thursday, winning 112-92 at Miami. However, they clearly missed the five-time All-Star two days later when they fell 93-85 at Chicago, ending their five-game winning streak with season lows in points and shooting percentage (32.1) while turning the ball over 15 times.
"We definitely missed him (Saturday) because having him, he slows down the pace," center Tyson Chandler said. "You can throw it down to him on the block. Having him, you know you'll get to the free throw line."
Now, they may have Anthony back against the Nuggets (10-10), the team he spent his first seven-plus seasons with before being sent to New York in a blockbuster trade in February 2011.
While Anthony's return to Denver is slated for March 13, he's faced the Nuggets at Madison Square Garden already. That game, though, was upstaged by a player the Nuggets got in return as the Knicks lost 119-114 in double-overtime Jan. 21.
Anthony scored 25 points with 10 rebounds, but Danilo Gallinari had 37 and 11, respectively, as he made his return to MSG.
If Anthony is unable to play, Raymond Felton would likely move to the forefront again. The guard had a season-high 27 points against the Heat, then matched it versus the Bulls while launching a career-high 30 shots.
"Probably haven't taken 30 since high school," said Felton, who is averaging 23.5 points over the past four games.
Chandler continues to be a force inside, averaging 15.0 points and 14.3 rebounds after posting 14 and 18 Saturday.
The Nuggets have split the first two of their season-high five-game road trip after winning 92-89 at Indiana on Friday.
Gallinari leads them with 15.2 points per game while adding 6.1 rebounds. However, he's struggled from the field over the last two games, making 5 of 20 shots - 1 of 5 from behind the arc - to total 25 points.
He had only six against the Pacers.
Corey Brewer has been providing a spark off the bench, averaging 19.3 points on 56.5 percent shooting from the field in three games after matching his season high with 20 points Friday. The swingman had 22 at New York in a loss with Minnesota on Jan 26, 2010, but has scored 13 in two subsequent visits.
Andre Miller is looking to build on his own impressive performance as a reserve, totaling 15 points, eight assists and two steals at Indiana. The 36-year-old guard put up eight of those points during a decisive 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter that put Denver up for good.
"He knows how to get shots down the stretch better than some of our other guys, some of our younger guys," coach George Karl said.
Miller is averaging 17.8 points and 7.6 assists in his last five games at the Garden, including 14 and 12, respectively, on Jan. 21.
