| |  | INDIANA: GUARDS: The Pacers went 7-2 during the regular season and won a playoff series with GEORGE HILL in the starting five. He averaged 13.9 PPG and 5.3 APG in those regular season starts . . . PAUL GEORGE is a defensive stopper who is making strides on the offensive end. If he can find the touches, his scoring average will rise . . . D.J. AUGUSTIN has a skill set similar to Hill's. Maybe he'll push him for minutes later in the year, but more likely he'll shoot corner threes off the bench . . . GERALD GREEN is another athlete for their second unit . . . LANCE STEPHENSON has a chance for a bigger role, but he's been atrocious to this point of his career. FORWARDS: DANNY GRANGER's touches dropped last season, but his shot selection improved as last year went on. He'll continue to be a borderline All-Star . . . DAVID WEST's knee should be fully recovered from his torn ACL in late 2010-11. He was their best player in the postseason and should be a star this season with his ability to knock down shots . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH looks like he's settling in as a career second unit player. His lack of athleticism really limits his upside . . . JEFF PENDERGRAPH may or may not hold on to a roster spot in a 12th-man role. CENTERS: They're paying ROY HIBBERT like a franchise player, and he has the ability to control both ends of the court. The question is whether they'll now play him 30-plus minutes, or continue to use him as more of a part-time player . . . IAN MAHINMI should step in as a decent backup center . . . Rookie MILES PLUMLEE was a part-time player at Duke and is highly unlikely to contribute in his first season. | | NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38. |

After falling victim to frustration in their first loss of the season, the New York Knicks will look to channel their emotions a little differently.
They'll try to bounce back Sunday against the Indiana Pacers, who have struggled to score but seemed to find some answers following some offensive tweaks.
The Knicks (6-1) return home hoping to start a new winning streak while extending their impressive start at Madison Square Garden. They've won their first three home games, each by a double-digit margin.
New York lost 105-95 at Memphis on Friday. It was the team's fewest points scored and most points allowed this season as it finally became the NBA's last club to be beaten.
The Knicks were within three points early in the third quarter, but after J.R. Smith was involved in a double-technical situation with Jerryd Bayless in the second, tempers flared again. Carmelo Anthony, Rasheed Wallace and coach Mike Woodson were all tagged with technicals during a 19-1 Grizzlies run.
The team tallied only two assists and shot 7 of 18 in the third quarter.
"We tried to do it individually instead of just moving the ball," point guard Jason Kidd said. "Guys got great looks and they didn't go in. Emotion is part of the game. For the whole team, this is a test we can learn from."
The Knicks' rebounding has been a weakness all season, and it finally caught up with them on Friday as they were outrebounded for the sixth straight game.
Wallace's showing was a bright spot. He scored 13 points in 24 minutes - both season highs - after the veteran totaled 36 points in New York's first six games.
The Pacers (4-6) saw some increased offense across the board in Friday's 103-83 home win over Dallas. Indiana has sputtered all season without injured leading scorer Danny Granger, but it might have discovered something while getting a second victory in seven games and reaching the century mark for the second time in 2012-13.
David West and George Hill scored 15 points each after combining for 10 on 4-of-19 shooting in the previous game, a 99-85 loss at Milwaukee that was the Pacers' fifth straight road defeat.
"Coach (Frank Vogel) challenged us that we needed to change immediately," Hill said. "He came in with different types of offensive sets that kind of helps us as athletes, who we are on this team, young and athletic.
"I like the direction that we're going."
The Pacers averaged 17.1 turnovers in their first nine games, but gave the ball away a season-low nine times Friday while posting a season-high 23 assists. Their 47.0 percent shooting was their best since hitting 47.4 percent from the field in their season opener at Toronto - their most recent road victory.
"I didn't like guys standing around," Vogel said. "I didn't like the speed in which we were running our offense. I didn't like the lack of physicality in our screening. There was a lot to not like. So changes were needed."
Indiana trailed by as many as 32 while losing its only trip to New York last season, 115-100 on March 16.
