KEY GAME INFORMATION
ORLANDO: LAST SEASON: 42-40, lost 4-1 in first round to Toronto
COACH: Steve Clifford (second season with Magic; seventh season overall, 238-254).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Evan Fournier (15.1 ppg), G D.J. Augustin (11.7), F Aaron Gordon (16.0), F Jonathan Isaac (9.6), C Nikola Vucevic (20.8).
KEY LOSSES: None.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Al-Farouq Aminu, G Markelle Fultz (acquired in February from Philadelphia but didn't play).
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There isn't a lot of mystery to the Magic entering this season, since they bring back basically the same team and will be adding a former No. 1 overall pick in Fultz who has worked for months to fix his shoulder and shooting issues. Vucevic is coming off a season where he set career-bests in points, rebounds and assists per game. When Gordon scored big, the Magic were really good; they went 16-8 in the 24 games where Gordon reached the 20-point mark. Terrence Ross is basically a sixth starter for Orlando, needing only 26.5 minutes per game to average 15.1 points last season in an instant-offense role coming off the bench.
OUTLOOK: The Magic improved by 17 wins last season and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012, doing all that without the burden of expectation. They won't have that same luxury this year, not after bringing back virtually every part of a team that didn't just get into the playoffs but did so by going 22-9 down the stretch of the regular season. Getting to the foul line more would be a major help, after the Magic ranked last in free throws made and free throws attempted last season. The biggest challenge for Clifford may be finding ways for his team to replicate the same get-into-the-playoffs hunger it had a year ago.
NEW ORLEANS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Alvin Gentry (fifth season with Pelicans, 145-183; 17th season overall, 480-553).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Lonzo Ball (9.9 ppg), G Jrue Holiday (21.2), F Brandon Ingram (18.3), F Zion Williamson (rookie), C Derrick Favors (11.8).
KEY LOSSES: F Anthony Davis, F Julius Randle, G Elfrid Payton.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Williamson, F Ingram, G Ball, C Favors, G J.J. Redick, G Nickeil Alexander-Walker, C Jaxson Hayes.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Williamson was the No. 1 overall pick in last summer's NBA draft, was a highlight machine at Duke and has looked fearless in his first NBA preseason ' taking the ball to the hoop against the best interior defenders in the league and scoring more than 20 points in multiple games. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound rookie is a social media phenomenon and filling arenas everywhere he goes. But the additions of Ball and Redick will be important to New Orleans as well.
OUTLOOK: Of the Pelicans' four new starters brought in by Griffin, one was picked No. 1 overall this summer and two Ingram and Ball were picked second overall within the previous three years by the Lakers before being packaged with Josh Hart and draft picks in a trade sending Davis to Los Angeles. Combined with savvy veterans like Holiday and Favors, not to mention Redick off the bench, there are high hopes in New Orleans that the Pelicans are trending upward and might even contend for a playoff spot this season. The Pelicans also expect 2019 first-round picks Alexander-Walker and Hayes to contribute this season.
PREVIEW
Losing streaks collide as Pelicans host Magic

The Orlando Magic appeared to be headed in the right direction when they recently won five of six games, but they have lost three in a row since.

The New Orleans Pelicans looked to be headed in the right direction when they won four of five last month, but they haven't won since -- losing 11 straight games.

Someone will end their losing streak when the Magic visit the Pelicans on Sunday afternoon.

Orlando's streak coincides with a trio of games against the NBA elite, losing to the teams with the best records in the NBA (Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers), then falling to the Houston Rockets 130-107 at home Friday as James Harden had his second straight 50-point game and fourth in his last seven, finishing with 54. He made 10 of 15 3-pointers.

"We had Plan A, B and C," Magic coach Steve Clifford said, "and when he's shooting over the top (over the defense) like that, I don't know what you can do."

Evan Fournier was matched against Harden much of the night, but still scored 27 points to lead his team.

"I feel like we lost against just him," Fournier said of Harden. "When he has 54 on you, it's almost like it's embarrassing because you want to give your all and stuff, but he's that great. And the fact that he does it every night is really impressive."

Markelle Fultz returned to the lineup against Houston after missing the loss to the Lakers on Wednesday because of a stomach virus. He had five points and five assists in 21 minutes.

Magic starting center Nikola Vucevic has missed the last 11 games because of a sprained ankle. He could return against the Pelicans.

The Pelicans also ran into one of the more challenging opponents in the league Friday as they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers, who remained unbeaten at home with their 14th consecutive victory (116-109).

"I love the fact that we competed at a real high level," New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry said, but he lamented the fact that his team made just 24 of 35 free throws as it tied the longest losing streak in franchise history.

"I thought we played smart basketball, but free throws and open shots, we have to make," Gentry added. "We've got to go to the line and hit those.

"There were just a couple of plays here and there and our margin for error is not good enough that we can let those plays go by. We had a game that was winnable for us and we didn't quite get it done."

Center Derrick Favors returned to the lineup after for the first time in four weeks and had eight points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes. He was sidelined by knee and back issues, then his mother, Deandra, passed away shortly before Thanksgiving.

"A couple of weeks ago basketball was probably the last thing on my mind," Favors said. "Obviously, going through that, I was like, 'I don't know what to do right now.' Just being able to be around my family and friends and that support system, they just kept encouraging me and gave me strength and I was able to get my mind right, get focused, and get ready to play."
