KEY GAME INFORMATION
GOLDEN STATE: GUARDS: New head coach Steve Kerr doesn't figure to tweak this system much, so expect STEPHEN CURRY to keep doing his thing. He's added elite playmaking skills to his already outstanding deep shooting . . . The Warriors are reluctant to part with KLAY THOMPSON in part because of his three-point shooting, but mostly because of his defensive value alongside Curry . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON will back up both guard spots. He's also the only proven point guard on the roster besides Curry . . . BRANDON RUSH will look to revive his career in Oakland. He'll have to prove his knees are healthy enough before he earns a rotation spot . . . It's a make or break year already for NEMANJA NEDOVIC, who was severely overmatched as a rookie. FORWARDS: ANDRE IGUODALA is a defensive specialist and no more than a role player on offense. His main job is to take some of the playmaking duties away from Curry . . . Kerr seems resigned to the fact that he's stuck with DAVID LEE. He has some value on offense, but remains one of the league's worst defensive frontcourt players. Expect him to lose some minutes under Kerr . . . HARRISON BARNES will play a bit of power forward in some small lineups, but mostly he'll play a wing spot. Barnes will have to regain his confidence early if he's going to be an impact sixth man . . . Kerr has hinted at a bigger role for DRAYMOND GREEN, who will play some stretch-4 this year . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS gives them an offense-only big man off the bench. CENTERS: Kerr has hinted at a bigger offensive role for ANDREW BOGUT. But monitoring the Aussie's minutes may be the bigger goal, to ensure he's actually available for the postseason . . . Back-up center FESTUS EZELI should be ready to return from his knee injury, though he was having shin problems during Summer League.
NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system.

*Warriors-Pelicans Preview* ===========================

By JUSTIN EINHORN STATS Senior Editor

Golden State At New Orleans, Game Three, 9:30 p.m. EDT

Even with the Golden State Warriors leading the eighth-seeded New Orleans Pelicans 2-0, expecting a runaway in this series might not be justified.

The first two games weren't decided until the final minutes and the series shifts Thursday night to New Orleans, the city where the Warriors last lost.

"We know that we can beat this team," Anthony Davis said after his Pelicans led by 13 in Monday's 97-87 loss, which was a two-point game with four minutes left.

"We were right there."

The series opener wasn't as close, but Davis made it a game by scoring 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as New Orleans fell 106-99 after trailing by 25 in the second half. Davis scored 26 on Monday but was 0 for 5 from the field in the final quarter and played 45 minutes - his career high for a non-overtime game.

"The grind-it-out kind of feel that these games were (in Oakland), you expect it's gonna be the exact same thing if not tougher in New Orleans," said Stephen Curry, averaging 28.0 points. "I'm sure they'll get some life being at home and feeling their home crowd. ... We know it's not gonna be easy regardless of how well we play."

The first playoff game in the Big Easy since 2011 has the Pelicans trying to avoid a 3-0 deficit, which no NBA team has overcome.

Golden State has its first 2-0 lead since 1989 and hasn't taken the first three games in a best-of-seven since sweeping Washington in the 1975 NBA Finals - its only championship since moving to California.

"(The Warriors) did what they were supposed to do - they won their home games," forward Quincy Pondexter told the Pelicans' official website. "We've got to go home and do the same thing. It's not a series until someone wins on the road."

No team had a better road record than Golden State (28-13), but New Orleans is 11-3 at home since the All-Star break. That includes five straight wins to close the regular season, capped by a playoff berth-clinching victory over San Antonio that ended the reigning champions' 11-game win streak and prevented them from claiming the No. 2 seed.

Eight days earlier, the Pelicans beat Golden State 103-100 to snap a 10-game losing streak in the series. The Warriors have since gone 6-0, but those games were all at home.

They needed overtime to win their other trip to New Orleans on Dec. 14 even with Davis and Eric Gordon sitting out. Gordon has totaled 39 points and nine 3-pointers in this series.

"We just have to stick with it," said Gordon, who also has nine turnovers.

Davis has committed eight as the target of Golden State's defense. The third-year forward, who shot 53.5 percent this season, was 9 of 22 Monday after starting 7 of 17 in Game 1 as the Pelicans fell well behind.

"AD is going hard for us out there, and we have to be there to support him when he has an off night," guard Norris Cole said. "... I think the more games he plays in the postseason, and the more games we play as a group in the postseason, the better we'll be."

Cole has seen big minutes because Tyreke Evans has a knee injury and Jrue Holiday is battling leg soreness that could force him to miss a second straight game. Evans, shooting 4 of 15 in the series, was limited to 12 minutes in Game 1 but had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists Monday.

While Evans' contributions may be vital to support Davis and Gordon, the Warriors have seen Draymond Green step up to back Curry and Klay Thompson (23.5 ppg). Green has averaged 14.5 points, 12.0 boards and 6.0 assists while doing a solid job defending Davis.

Though coach Steve Kerr is happy with Green's effort, he wants his team to play better throughout the game rather than in spurts.

"We've got to put four quarters together where we're just executing and moving the ball and taking care of it," Kerr said. "That's what we've done this year for the most part, but we're still a pretty young team."
