|
| | | DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems. | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system. |

*Pistons-Pelicans Preview* ==========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Detroit (23-36) at New Orleans (32-28), 8:00 p.m. EDT
With their longest winning stretch of the season now over, the New Orleans Pelicans can get back on track by continuing their success at home and against the Detroit Pistons.
The Pelicans can equal a season-high four-game home winning streak with a sixth straight victory over the Pistons on Wednesday night.
New Orleans' five-game run ended with Monday's 102-93 loss at Dallas. It led by three at halftime before shooting 26.3 percent while being outscored 25-13 during a decisive third quarter.
Though the Pelicans (32-28) dropped one game back of Oklahoma City for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, they remain confident going forward.
"We've had a really good (1 1/2 weeks) of basketball," said coach Monty Williams, whose team shot 47.3 percent despite the rough third period. "We've got to grow from this. This is part of the process. You're not going to win every game in the NBA. ... Now you get a chance to go home and hold service."
The Pelicans play three straight at home, where they're 20-10 and have shot 51.3 percent in winning the last three.
"We are definitely looking forward to going home," said guard Eric Gordon, who has averaged 18.7 points in the last three contests.
Though it's uncertain if star Anthony Davis will be available at any point during the home stretch, he's likely to miss a sixth straight contest with a sprained shoulder that's sidelined him seven of the last nine.
"We don't want to put a timetable on it because that puts pressure on," Williams said. "We know A.D. and where his heart is. When he can play, he'll be the first to tell us."
New Orleans also remains without point guard Jrue Holiday (leg) and backup forward Ryan Anderson (knee).
Norris Cole, acquired from Miami last month to help fill the void left by Holiday's absence, scored a team-high 19 on Monday. He's averaged 11.7 points in six games with New Orleans.
Davis and Anderson combined for 44 points as the Pelicans shot 48.8 percent and owned a 47-30 rebounding advantage during a 105-94 win at Detroit on Jan. 14.
New Orleans has averaged 104.8 points and shot 47.4 percent during a five-game winning streak over the Pistons (23-36), who are looking to avoid a fourth straight defeat.
Though Detroit showed its mettle by overcoming a 21-point deficit to take a one-point lead with 6:48 to play at Washington on Saturday, it failed to hold on and lost 99-95.
The Pistons rank sixth in the NBA shooting 46.8 percent when trailing by at least 15 points but 20th at 43.8 percent when ahead by three or fewer.
"I don't know if its pressure when we're ahead and we can't handle it or what, but we don't play the same way when we are in front. That's got to change," said Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy, whose team has followed a seven-game road winning streak by losing six of seven away from home.
After recording 28 points and 13 rebounds in Friday's double-overtime loss to New York, Greg Monroe had 21 with 10 boards against the Wizards. He's totaled 55 points and 20 rebounds in the last two at New Orleans.
Pelicans guard Tyreke Evans fell shy of a triple-double versus Detroit with 18 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in January.
