| |  | BOSTON: GUARDS: This offense now belongs to RAJON RONDO, and that should be especially true during the regular season . . . Even if he comes off the bench, JASON TERRY figures to see the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard. He provides some much-needed outside shooting after Ray Allen left and should challenge Paul Pierce for the team lead in shot attempts . . . Adding COURTNEY LEE was more of a move for the future. He's a fine young second-unit player for now and should be an heir apparent on one of the wings . . . AVERY BRADLEY could be out until December after shoulder surgery. As Boston's best perimeter defensive player, he could reclaim his starting job in the season's second half . . . The addition of LEANDRO BARBOSA gives Boston another veteran who can create his own offense in the second unit, something that was sorely missing in last year's playoff run. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE quietly had a great regular season last year. Though with some improved depth behind him, Rivers might have his 35-year-old All-Star wing rest more often . . . BRANDON BASS gives them another scoring option, even if he does struggle on the defensive end. He'll get full-time minutes only in certain matchups as long as the frontcourt is healthy . . . JEFF GREEN's heart condition is no longer a concern, but the tweener's role in Boston after a year off is cause for worry . . . There are already question marks surrounding rookie JARED SULLINGER's back. He's very similar to Bass: He can score out to mid-range but doesn't play much defense. Expect him to be strictly a second-unit player in his first NBA season . . . CHRIS WILCOX will provide fouls off the bench when healthy. CENTERS: The Celtics are prepared to go with KEVIN GARNETT in the middle, which was the case when they were at their best last season. His role on offense is still knocking down mid-range jumpers, and he's still an elite defensive player . . . Professional flopper JASON COLLINS will fill in nicely for the departed Greg Stiemsma . . . FAB MELO is years away from being ready to contribute (if he actually is ever ready to contribute) and DARKO MILICIC was also added via free agency for more frontcourt depth. | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. |

After the short-handed Boston Celtics nearly knocked off the hottest team in the NBA, they hope to get a key piece back in time for the start of their road trip.
The Celtics could have Kevin Garnett in the lineup when they take on the sinking New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night.
Garnett missed the last two contests while dealing with the flu and a strained abductor, but coach Doc Rivers said Garnett was close to playing against Miami on Monday. The Celtics (36-30) are 2-1 without Garnett this season.
Boston led by 17 in the first half against the league-best Heat, but LeBron James' go-ahead basket with 10.5 seconds left gave Miami a 105-103 victory that extended its winning streak to 23.
Jeff Green carried the Celtics offensively with a career-high 43 points. In the three games without Garnett, Green has averaged 28.0 points while going 30 for 44 from the field and 8 for 13 from 3-point range.
Paul Pierce added 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists but missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds that could have given Boston the win.
"No moral victories, even though it was a close game," Pierce said.
The Celtics had won seven of nine before falling to the Heat, but the two losses came on the road by an average of 19.0 points. Boston is opening a three-game trip and plays six of eight away from home.
A date with the league-worst Hornets could give the Celtics a good chance to get the stretch started with a win. New Orleans (22-46) lost its fourth straight and 12th in 15 games Monday, 93-72 to Golden State in the opener of a seven-game homestand.
Ryan Anderson had 21 points and Anthony Davis added 16, but the Hornets shot 33.7 percent from the field and 3 for 17 from 3-point range.
"We took a lot of bad shots," coach Monty Williams said. "It's a challenge to try to manufacture your offense with guys who are trying their best to make shots when we don't have a guy to get it done, get the ball and go to the basket."
Despite its recent struggles, New Orleans has won four of five meetings with the Celtics and can sweep the season series following a 90-78 victory Jan. 16.
The Hornets rolled to the surprisingly victory in part by dominating the boards, holding a 55-40 advantage. That could again be an area of concern this time for the Celtics, who rank near the bottom of the NBA in rebounding differential at minus-3.8.
Davis has averaged 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in his last six games overall.
Garnett led Boston with a team-high 15 points in the first meeting, but he's scored 9.0 per game and shot 37.5 percent in his last three at New Orleans.
