|
| | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man." | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. |

*Hawks-Hornets Preview* =======================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Atlanta (19-9) at New Orleans (7-23), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The New Orleans Hornets will be going for back-to-back wins on Tuesday night for only the second time this season. But with the return of the team's top scorer seemingly breathing new life into the lineup, it looks much more attainable.
The Hornets will try to start a rare winning streak when they host the Atlanta Hawks.
New Orleans (7-23) hasn't won consecutive games since Nov. 2-3 - its second and third games of the season - but has won two of its last three, the most recent victory highlighted by Eric Gordon's season debut.
Gordon came off the bench to score 24 points in less than 25 minutes in Saturday's 98-95 win at Charlotte. He also had seven assists and two steals in his first game since April 22.
The fifth-year pro only played nine games last season and had arthroscopic surgery on his knee because of a bone bruise.
"I felt pretty good, I was kind of surprised," Gordon said. "Now I'm just going to try to get better and better from here. I wouldn't have had a chance to help this team earlier with my knee, but I'm glad everything is working out now."
The impact of having Gordon on the court isn't just limited to his individual production. Perhaps even more valuable is what he does for his teammates, as his scoring ability commands attention from the opposing defense.
Ryan Anderson, the team leader with 17.7 points per game, said he hadn't received open looks like he did against Charlotte in a while. He credited the presence of Gordon, who averaged a career-high 22.3 points in 56 games for the Clippers in 2010-11.
"He's a special player," said Anderson, who had 19 points and eight rebounds. "There are not a lot of guys like him in the NBA. He hasn't quite warmed up to be 100 percent comfortable yet with this group on the court, but to come out and take over like that, that is the mark of a special player."
The Hawks (19-10) had a four-game win streak snapped with a 123-104 loss at Houston on Monday in the opener of a three-game trip. Atlanta allowed the Rockets to go on a 16-0 run in the second quarter and could never overcome an 18-point halftime deficit.
The 123 points were the most allowed this season by the Hawks, who relied more on their offense during the winning streak. Atlanta is averaging 106.6 ppg over its last five but couldn't keep pace with high-scoring Houston, which shot 53.6 percent from the field.
"Houston's shooting pretty much sums it up," said Josh Smith, who scored 17 points after missing one game with a hip injury. "They got on a streak where they couldn't miss."
Monday's defeat wasn't a result of the Hawks' 3-point shooting, which remained hot as they went 12 of 23 from beyond the arc and have hit 10 or more in a franchise-record four straight games.
Devin Harris (7.7 ppg) and Anthony Morrow (5.5) have missed the last seven and two games for Atlanta, respectively, and coach Larry Drew said they won't be with the team until it returns home on Saturday.
"We won't know how long (they will be out) until we get back," Drew told the team's official website. "We're still just treating both guys."
The teams have split their last eight meetings, with the Hawks winning last season's lone matchup, 94-72 in New Orleans. Jeff Teague scored a season-high 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range.
