|
| | | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO could be back by late December, but even he's not confident his knee will be 100 percent. His minutes might have to be scaled back . . . LUKE RIDNOUR will handle the offense with Rubio hampered. The vet is a steady hand in coach Rick Adelman's Euro-style offense . . . They're counting on BRANDON ROY to reclaim his old form after a radical knee procedure. He may never be 100 percent, but he should at least give them sixth-man minutes . . . CHASE BUDINGER is a three-point marksman who moves well off the ball, a perfect fit in Adelman's system . . . J.J. BAREA will take some of the point guard burden as well. He's a top sixth man . . . ALEXEY SHVED can help as a combo guard, though he might have trouble breaking into this rotation . . . MALCOLM LEE is a defensive stopper who won't be asked to shoot very often. FORWARDS: Despite being limited athletically, KEVIN LOVE is an elite rebounder and shooter for a big. He'll continue to be the focal point of this offense once he returns from a broken hand in early December . . . ANDREI KIRILENKO returns to the States after a dominating Euroleague stint. He's a big upgrade at the three and should be comfortable in Adelman's system . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS will continue his attempted transition to the three. As last year proved, he's a long, long ways away. He might have to play himself into a rotation spot . . . DANTE CUNNINGHAM is a nice, efficient big to bring off the bench . . . Since they need shooting on the wings, rookie ROBBIE HUMMEL has a chance to crack the rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a beast, the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. His total rebounding numbers get hurt playing alongside Kevin Love, but Pekovic will continue to bully his way to put-backs . . . GREG STIEMSMA is going to come in and do some pushing and shoving (and occasional shot-blocking) for 12-to-15 MPG. | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. |

*Timberwolves-Hornets Preview* ==============================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Minnesota (10-9) at New Orleans (5-16), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Despite Kevin Love's issues with the Minnesota Timberwolves as a franchise, the team has played well of late.
Not even the return of New Orleans' prized rookie has helped the Hornets end their latest slide.
The visiting Timberwolves look to match a season high with a third straight victory and hand the Hornets a sixth consecutive defeat Friday night.
Hours before Minnesota (10-9) beat Denver 108-105 on Wednesday for its fifth win in seven games, Love tried to clarify his comments from a recent Internet story in which he questioned decisions made by team president David Kahn. Though Love stood by what he said about Kahn's building of the team and his complaint of getting a four-year deal instead of the maximum five-year contract extension last January, he remains happy with the team's direction.
Minnesota has averaged 97.9 points over the last seven games after averaging 91.8 in losing each of its previous five.
"I'm not going to fall back and say I didn't mean the things that I said," Love said prior to Wednesday's victory. "I do believe this is the closest-knit team that we have, the coaching staff has been great and we have a chance to make something very special this year and for years to come."
Love was jeered by some Minnesota fans, and not entirely because he shot 3 of 17 and had eight points to go with 14 rebounds against the Nuggets. It was the worst shooting performance when attempting at least eight shots in his career.
"If we can win and I can have a game like that, I'm not going to be mad," said Love, averaging 19.9 points and 14.2 boards in 10 games since missing the first nine with a broken hand. "I was very happy."
With Love struggling, Nikola Pekovic had 22 points with 11 rebounds while Andrei Kirilenko scored 18 and J.J. Barea added 17, eight assists and five rebounds as Minnesota set a season high for points.
"It was a team win," Barea told the Timberwolves' official website. "Our star Kevin struggled a little bit, but everyone else stepped up. That's when a team becomes good."
The Timberwolves have not played all that well lately against the Hornets, averaging 86.8 points and shooting 39.2 percent in losing two straight and three of four. Love, however, has averaged 30.0 points and 14.7 boards in the last three at New Orleans.
If the Hornets' success versus Minnesota is to continue they must snap a five-game skid in which they've averaged 84.8 points and shot 41.1 percent. Though New Orleans (5-16) has had No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis back for the last two contests after an 11-game absence due to a sore ankle, the results have been the same.
Brian Roberts scored 16 points off the bench while Davis added 11 in Wednesday's 92-88 loss at Oklahoma City. The Hornets led by 11 late in the third quarter before the Thunder used a 16-2 run to ultimately control the contest.
"I thought we competed," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "I thought we brought an edge. Obviously we lost the game, but when we compete that way you give yourselves a chance."
The Hornets will try to avoid matching their season high with a fourth consecutive home loss Friday.
