|
| | | OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: RUSSELL WESTBROOK can do whatever he wants inside the arc and will continue to be a shoot-first point guard . . . JAMES HARDEN will likely keep coming off the bench, but he'll also keep playing starter's minutes . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA is OKC's best perimeter defender. But his role won't become more prominent until the postseason . . . ERIC MAYNOR should be just about all the way back from his torn ACL. When healthy, he's one of the league's best backup point guards . . . DAEQUAN COOK will see limited minutes as a three-point specialist . . . REGGIE JACKSON's role will shrink to near nothing if Maynor is healthy. FORWARDS: KEVIN DURANT continues to do it all, and has done nothing but steadily improve each season . . . SERGE IBAKA is obviously an elite shot-blocker, but he continues to get lost in space. He's made some strides as a pick-and-roll defender, but that weakness is why he doesn't play 30 minutes per night . . . NICK COLLISON will continue to steal a lot of Ibaka's minutes because he defends the pick-and-roll better, and because he draws so many charges, he's almost as good in help situations . . . PERRY JONES III is an incredible athlete, but needs a year or two to learn the game . . . LAZAR HAYWARD is back as a 12th man. CENTERS: KENDRICK PERKINS will continue to start, but is a part-time player. The Thunder are often better with a small lineup. While Perkins is a bruiser he is too easy to exploit as a defender in space . . . COLE ALDRICH could be ready for a slightly bigger role off the bench . . . HASHEEM THABEET is a reclamation project. There's a sliver of long-term hope, but he won't help this year. | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. |

*Thunder-Hornets Preview* =========================
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN STATS Senior Writer
Oklahoma City (12-4) at New Orleans (4-10), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Kevin Durant has simply been sizzling during the Oklahoma City Thunder's five-game win streak over the New Orleans Hornets.
Durant's best career shooting percentage versus a Western Conference club is against the Hornets, the team he'll face as he tries to help the visiting Thunder post a fifth straight victory Saturday night.
The superstar is averaging 31.0 points on 66.3 percent shooting during this five-game run over New Orleans (4-10). He's a 52.3 percent career shooter against the Hornets.
Durant and reserve Kevin Martin each scored 27 in the Thunder's 110-95 win at New Orleans on Nov. 16. The final score was hardly indicative of how much Oklahoma City (13-4) dominated as it never trailed, led by 29 at halftime and by as many as 34.
The Hornets had rookie Anthony Davis in that contest, but the top overall pick will miss his seventh straight game Saturday with a left ankle injury.
Davis' absence probably won't help New Orleans slow down an Oklahoma City team averaging a league-best 105.4 points. The Hornets are last in the NBA with 5.7 steals per game.
New Orleans may have extra incentive to provide a better showing based on an incident near the end of the first half from the first meeting. Russell Westbrook and Greivis Vasquez were assessed double technical fouls and Durant and Kendrick Perkins walked toward midcourt to have words with Hornets players.
Oklahoma City capped a 3-0 homestand Friday with a 106-94 win over Utah. Durant scored 25 and Westbrook had 23 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists, seven steals and eight turnovers as the Thunder led by as many as 18 points after winning the first two games of the stretch by an average of 33.5 points.
"Definitely a good homestand leading to the road," said Westbrook, who has appeared in 329 straight games for the NBA's longest current streak. "We're playing good basketball right now. Everybody's moving the ball, feeling good and hopefully we can continue it."
Westbrook was one shy of his career high in steals and two off his best rebounding total.
"He makes big plays. It's not always just making a pass or scoring," Durant said. "He makes big plays that change the game."
Durant logged 40 minutes and Westbrook 39. That may not slow them down since the Thunder are 4-0 when playing the second half of games on consecutive nights.
The Hornets' loss to Oklahoma City last month started their current three-game home skid. They have fallen by an average of 16.4 points in those contests after Wednesday's 96-84 defeat to the Jazz.
New Orleans trailed by two at the break before getting outscored 31-17 in the third quarter.
"We looked like a young team," coach Monty Williams said. "Some of our young guys were making mistakes where they knew it when they made it and when the coaches talked to them. That is part of this process."
Vasquez and Robin Lopez each scored 18 points. Vasquez has averaged 18.5 points over his last four games, but he's been far better on the road (17.9 ppg, 48.0 percent shooting) than at home (9.6, 35.1).
