|
| | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD | | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half. |

*Trail Blazers-Timberwolves Preview* ====================================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Portland (41-19) at Minnesota (13-47), 8:00 p.m. EDT
While the surging Portland Trail Blazers are on the verge of their second-longest winning streak of the season, their latest victory has come at a huge cost with Wesley Matthews lost for the season.
Seeking a sixth consecutive win, Portland will try to get by without its third-leading scorer when it visits the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.
Matthews has started all 153 games - including playoffs - since the start of last season, but his streak will end after he ruptured his left Achilles tendon in Thursday's 94-75 win over Dallas. He was running with the ball when he fell to the court untouched two minutes into the third quarter.
"It's tough, man. He's the heart and soul of this team, he brings a lot to this team," All-Star center LaMarcus Aldridge said. "I've played with him seven, eight years now, so not having him out there is going to be tough."
Matthews was averaging 15.9 points, and his ability to stretch the floor will certainly be missed. He is fourth in the league with 173 made 3-pointers.
"Wes plays harder than anybody on our team," point guard Damian Lillard said. "It's hard for our team to think about not having out there because of everything he brings to this team and the person that he is."
Recently acquired Arron Afflalo could replace Matthews in the starting five. Afflalo was averaging 14.5 points in 53 games with Denver before coming over in a five-player deal before the trade deadline.
The Blazers have outscored opponents by an average of 10.8 points during their run. They outrebounded the Mavericks 56-41 behind 12 boards apiece from Aldridge and Nicolas Batum.
Afflalo was one of four reserves to score at least six points, and Portland will surely be looking for more from Chris Kaman, Dorell Wright and Alonzo Gee going forward.
"We have a lot of guys able to contribute," said coach Terry Stotts, whose team is looking to win six straight for the first time since a season-best nine-game run Nov. 9-26. "I like our depth, and I think it's helped us get to where we are so far this season."
The Blazers enter the weekend eight games ahead of Oklahoma City for the Northwest Division lead and 28 in front of the last-place Timberwolves (13-47). Portland had taken four straight and 25 of 28 in the series before falling 90-82 at Minnesota on Dec. 10.
Lillard had 23 points and Matthews scored 18, but Aldridge finished with 10 on 3-of-14 shooting as the Blazers were held to their second-lowest scoring total of the season. Timberwolves star rookie Andrew Wiggins posted his only double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Minnesota is looking to avoid a fifth consecutive loss after falling 100-85 to Denver on Wednesday. Wiggins led all scorers with 20 points, but the Timberwolves were outscored 19-3 in transition and 52-28 in the paint.
Ricky Rubio and Kevin Martin combined for 19 points on 7 of 28 from the floor. Minnesota took a one-point lead into the second quarter before getting outscored 34-16.
"I blame myself," said Rubio, who also committed four turnovers. "I didn't bring it tonight. Without energy it's hard to play defense."
Wiggins is averaging 20.9 points over the last seven games, up from his season mark of 15.9.
Minnesota waived little-used Glenn Robinson III on Thursday to make room for center Justin Hamilton, who gives the team some added depth down low with Nikola Pekovic battling a sore right ankle.
