| |  | DALLAS: GUARDS: DARREN COLLISON's jump shot might be shaky, but he can get into the lane at will. He'll be a much different look than Jason Kidd had been in Big D . . . O.J. MAYO becomes the second option in this offense. He'll have the ball in his hands a lot . . . VINCE CARTER will come off the bench. At this point, he's a three-point specialist, and not a very good one . . . DELONTE WEST will back up both guard spots. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Collison at some point . . . RODDY BEAUBOIS can heat up in an instant, but he has work to do to make this rotation . . . DAHNTAY JONES is roster filler . . . DOMINIQUE JONES enters the year on the roster bubble . . . JARED CUNNINGHAM will learn the point guard position watching from the bench as a rookie. FORWARDS: After a slow start last season, DIRK NOWITZKI looked like the Dirk of old in the second half of the year. He's still got something left in the tank, but it's still unclear if the swelling in his knee will require surgery, something that would shelve him for more than a month . . . SHAWN MARION is still an important cog in Carlisle's creative defensive gameplans, so he'll keep playing big minutes despite his dwindling offensive skills . . . ELTON BRAND is still relevant, even behind Nowitzki, because of his ability to play some center . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will be in and out of the rotation again, but he's now relatively healthy and showed signs of being a serviceable rotation player a year ago . . . Rookie Jae CROWDER profiles as a potentially solid second-unit player, but he'll be buried on this depth chart. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN gives Dallas some offensive skill at center, but he's not exactly the defensive presence they've needed. He'll log the bulk of the minutes here, but there are going to be a handful of games where the Mavs have to sit him and go small for defensive purposes . . . 27-year-old rookie BERNARD JAMES could fill Ian Mahinmi's old role of a shot-blocker/fouler off the bench.
| | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO could be back by late December, but even he's not confident his knee will be 100 percent. His minutes might have to be scaled back . . . LUKE RIDNOUR will handle the offense with Rubio hampered. The vet is a steady hand in coach Rick Adelman's Euro-style offense . . . They're counting on BRANDON ROY to reclaim his old form after a radical knee procedure. He may never be 100 percent, but he should at least give them sixth-man minutes . . . CHASE BUDINGER is a three-point marksman who moves well off the ball, a perfect fit in Adelman's system . . . J.J. BAREA will take some of the point guard burden as well. He's a top sixth man . . . ALEXEY SHVED can help as a combo guard, though he might have trouble breaking into this rotation . . . MALCOLM LEE is a defensive stopper who won't be asked to shoot very often. FORWARDS: Despite being limited athletically, KEVIN LOVE is an elite rebounder and shooter for a big. He'll continue to be the focal point of this offense once he returns from a broken hand in early December . . . ANDREI KIRILENKO returns to the States after a dominating Euroleague stint. He's a big upgrade at the three and should be comfortable in Adelman's system . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS will continue his attempted transition to the three. As last year proved, he's a long, long ways away. He might have to play himself into a rotation spot . . . DANTE CUNNINGHAM is a nice, efficient big to bring off the bench . . . Since they need shooting on the wings, rookie ROBBIE HUMMEL has a chance to crack the rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a beast, the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. His total rebounding numbers get hurt playing alongside Kevin Love, but Pekovic will continue to bully his way to put-backs . . . GREG STIEMSMA is going to come in and do some pushing and shoving (and occasional shot-blocking) for 12-to-15 MPG. |

While he hasn't quite returned to his All-Star form, Dirk Nowitzki has hit some big shots lately to breathe some life into the Dallas Mavericks' playoff hopes.
Dallas seeks its fourth win in five games on Sunday night when it visits the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have lost seven of eight.
Since starting out 1-8 in December once Nowitzki returned from preseason knee surgery, the Mavericks (28-33) have turned things around with a 14-9 record since Jan. 10 with the 7-footer in the lineup. Nowitzki had just 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting on Friday, but drilled a pair of jumpers down the stretch to key a 102-99 win at Detroit.
Nowitzki is averaging 15.9 points on 44.1 percent shooting - his lowest scoring average since his rookie season - but has scored 18.5 per game while hitting 50.4 percent from the field in his last eight.
Thanks to Utah's loss at New York on Saturday, the Mavericks have moved within three games of the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. Still, they'll have to leapfrog the Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers and Portland to reach the postseason.
"We're just taking them one game at a time," Nowitzki said. "We can't really look at the big picture, because it doesn't really look that great. We just have to stay positive and keep working."
After finishing with 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting in a 113-98 home win over the Timberwolves on Jan. 14, Nowitzki hopes to add to his recent success in Minnesota. He's averaged 25.1 points while hitting 55.3 percent from the field in his last nine visits.
The Mavericks appear to have a decent shot at continuing their late playoff push against a Minnesota team that has lost 23 of 28 following a 111-88 defeat at Denver on Saturday.
While the Timberwolves (21-38) pulled out a 90-82 victory at Dallas on Nov. 12 and a 114-106 overtime home win on Dec. 15, those wins came before Nowitzki returned.
Dallas guard O.J. Mayo, who had 22 points and went 5 for 8 from 3-point range on Friday, has averaged 19.3 points while hitting 7 for 11 from beyond the arc in the season series.
Shawn Marion, though, is a game-time decision after missing Friday's contest with a calf injury.
The Timberwolves, meanwhile, are expected to play without four starters - Nikola Pekovic (abdominal strain), Kevin Love (broken hand), Andrei Kirilenko (strained left calf) and Brandon Roy (knee surgery) - for the fifth straight contest.
"It gets tough on all of us, especially when you have nine guys and you're going up against a team like (Denver)," said forward Derrick Williams, who has averaged 19.4 points and 9.1 rebounds in his last seven games.
Mickael Gelabale had a season-high 19 points on Saturday, while J.J. Barea added 15. Barea, who helped Dallas win the 2011 title, has scored 36 in his last two against the Mavericks after sitting out the first meeting with a sprained left foot.
Minnesota, however, has averaged just 87.8 points while shooting 39.7 percent from the floor and 27 for 104 (26.0 percent) from 3-point range in its last six.
Since winning 18 of 19 in this series, the Mavericks have dropped four of six to the Timberwolves.
