KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA CLIPPERS: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-2 to Golden State in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Doc Rivers (seventh season with Clippers, 307-185; 21st season overall, 894-658).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: F Kawhi Leonard (30.5 ppg with Toronto), F Paul George (23.7 with Oklahoma City), G Patrick Beverley (7.6), G Landry Shamet (9.1), C Ivica Zubac (8.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, F Danilo Gallinari, F Wilson Chandler, G-F Garrett Temple, G Sindarius Thornwell, G Tyrone Wallace.
KEY ADDITIONS: Leonard, George.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It's all about newcomers Leonard and George. They'll be the top two options on offense. Leonard is coming off a season in which he led Toronto to its first NBA championship (and earned his second ring). Leonard returning home was contingent upon pairing with George, also an LA-area native. George, who finished third in MVP voting last season, can guard nearly any position while being a huge scoring threat. Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, the NBA's top bench-scoring duo last season, will get starter-level minutes again.
OUTLOOK: No more watching other teams go deep in the playoffs. The NBA's balance of power has shifted to the Clippers, who have never advanced beyond the second round let alone won a championship. All that's expected to change behind Leonard and George, both regarded as two of the best two-way players in the league. The Clippers had to give up talented veteran Gallinari and star-in-the-making Gilgeous-Alexander, but they kept Harrell, Williams and re-signed Beverley, whose sole job will be using his tenacious D to keep others from scoring. The Clippers are favorites to win it all, a stunning shift for a franchise that has spent much of its existence as a punch line.
MILWAUKEE: LAST SEASON: 60-22, best record in the NBA during the regular season, lost to Toronto in six games in the Eastern Conference finals.
COACH: Mike Budenholzer (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Eric Bledsoe (15.9 ppg), G Wesley Matthews (12.2 ppg), F Khris Middleton (18.3 ppg), F Giannis Antetokounmpo (27.7 ppg), C Brook Lopez (12.5 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Malcolm Brogdon, F Nikola Mirotic, G Tony Snell.
KEY ADDITIONS: Matthews, C Robin Lopez, G Kyle Korver, F Dragan Bender, F Thanasis Antetokounmpo. PLAYER TO WATCH: Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo had the best season of his career a season ago en route to earning NBA MVP. He was outplayed by Kawhi Leonard in the Eastern Conference finals. Now, in his seventh season, how will Antetokounmpo improve his game offensively as he looks to take the Bucks to the finals and capture the first NBA title for the franchise since 1971?
OUTLOOK: Expectations have never been higher for the Bucks. A season after winning MVP, Coach of the Year (Budenholzer) and Executive of the Year (GM Jon Horst), Milwaukee enters this season without former Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon, one of only eight players in NBA history in the 50-40-90 club. The Bucks lost Brogdon to free agency, but managed to keep their core of Bledsoe, Lopez, Middleton and Antetokounmpo together. With both Leonard and LeBron James now out west, anything less than a conference finals appearance will be deemed a failure in Milwaukee.

Clippers, Bucks to test mettle in top-tier battle

The NBA's Christmas benchmark remains three weeks away yet two of the better teams from each conference will get a chance to see how they measure up when standing side by side.

The Eastern Conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks will bring a 13-game winning streak into a home matchup Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers, who reside in second place in the West. The Clippers have nine victories in their last 10 games.

Christmas typically is the season's unofficial starting line when teams can begin digging in their heels for the four-month grind toward the regular-season finish line. The Bucks and Clippers are fairly certain of their regular-season destiny. They are expected to be title contenders when the playoffs arrive.

The Bucks are getting it done behind Giannis Antetokounmpo again, with the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player averaging 31.0 points per game and 13.2 rebounds. He had 35 points and nine rebounds in Milwaukee's 127-103 cakewalk over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, his 13th game of at least 30 points this season.

After the Bucks defeated the Pistons eight times last season, including in the playoffs, Wednesday's game was a physical affair with six technical fouls. It does not figure to be as chippy against the Clippers, even in a matchup of top players like Antetokounmpo and the Clippers' Kawhi Leonard.

"There's going to be a lot of teams that are going to come out and try to be physical with me, try to hit me, knock me down to the floor," Antetokounmpo said after the game. "I've just got to keep my composure. I think I have great teammates that always talk to me and tell me, 'Stay focused. Stay in the game.'"

The last time the Bucks won this many games in succession was the 1973-74 season, when they advanced to the NBA Finals.

Milwaukee has not lost since a Nov. 8 stumble at Utah. That game came immediately after the Bucks earned a 129-124 victory at Los Angeles against the Clippers.

Antetokounmpo had 38 points and 16 rebounds in that one, but the Clippers hung in until the end without Leonard, who received a day of rest on the second night of back-to-back games. And Paul George had not played yet as he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery.

Leonard will be fully rested for this one after the Clippers earned a 117-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. And George is now in the fold, making his season debut midway through November.

Leonard scored just 11 points on 3-for-15 shooting against the Blazers, but George finished with 25 points -- highlighted by making 6 of 7 shots from 3-point range.

Leonard has scored 25.0 points per game with 7.9 rebounds. George has 23.5 points in 11 games with 6.1 rebounds. The duo has combined to average 8.8 assists per game.

"The best part of this team, in my opinion, is that we're not near where we're going to be," head coach Doc Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "And you can feel that. Our guys know that. They know that we're playing winning basketball.

"We're playing together, we're playing hard, we're talking, but they also know we don't have it together yet. They know that. They can feel that."
