KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO could be back by late December, but even he's not confident his knee will be 100 percent. His minutes might have to be scaled back . . . LUKE RIDNOUR will handle the offense with Rubio hampered. The vet is a steady hand in coach Rick Adelman's Euro-style offense . . . They're counting on BRANDON ROY to reclaim his old form after a radical knee procedure. He may never be 100 percent, but he should at least give them sixth-man minutes . . . CHASE BUDINGER is a three-point marksman who moves well off the ball, a perfect fit in Adelman's system . . . J.J. BAREA will take some of the point guard burden as well. He's a top sixth man . . . ALEXEY SHVED can help as a combo guard, though he might have trouble breaking into this rotation . . . MALCOLM LEE is a defensive stopper who won't be asked to shoot very often. FORWARDS: Despite being limited athletically, KEVIN LOVE is an elite rebounder and shooter for a big. He'll continue to be the focal point of this offense once he returns from a broken hand in early December . . . ANDREI KIRILENKO returns to the States after a dominating Euroleague stint. He's a big upgrade at the three and should be comfortable in Adelman's system . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS will continue his attempted transition to the three. As last year proved, he's a long, long ways away. He might have to play himself into a rotation spot . . . DANTE CUNNINGHAM is a nice, efficient big to bring off the bench . . . Since they need shooting on the wings, rookie ROBBIE HUMMEL has a chance to crack the rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a beast, the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. His total rebounding numbers get hurt playing alongside Kevin Love, but Pekovic will continue to bully his way to put-backs . . . GREG STIEMSMA is going to come in and do some pushing and shoving (and occasional shot-blocking) for 12-to-15 MPG.
MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: BRANDON JENNINGS benefitted from the arrival of Monta Ellis last year. He has the offense and system to thrive, and now needs to prove he can be efficient enough to be a star . . . MONTA ELLIS played second fiddle to Jennings last year, and really struggled to shoot the ball. The Bucks now play the kind of tempo he likes, but he'll have to adjust to playing off the ball more often . . . BENO UDRIH won't see a ton of action off the bench considering Jennings and Ellis play so many minutes. If a starter gets hurt, he could step in and hit a lot of threes . . . Second-rounder DORON LAMB has some upside as a future sixth man, but figures to ride the bench this year once his torn elbow ligament heals. FORWARDS: ERSAN ILYASOVA should finally get some respect from Skiles after starring down the stretch last year . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY re-emerged as a legitimate three-point threat, though he doesn't do much else . . . DREW GOODEN's role should shrink with Ilyasova stepping up and Sam Dalembert coming in . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is coming off knee surgery, but he's improving as a rebounder and can play both forward spots off the bench . . . Rookie JOHN HENSON is a defensive stud and does enough as a screener to get decent minutes early . . . TOBIAS HARRIS was a Summer League star, but he's too much of a 'tweener to thrive in the NBA . . . EKPE UDOH provides defense and rebounding off the bench . . . LARRY SANDERS has potential, but this frontcourt is too crowded for him to make an impact. CENTERS: SAM DALEMBERT fell in and out of favor in Houston, but he's exactly what the Bucksneed as a defensive presence in the paint. Milwaukee has numerous players who can man the five in spots (Ekpe Udoh, Drew Gooden), but Dalembert is by far their best defensive option and should see big minutes . . . JOEL PRZYBILLA signed on in August to provide back-end depth on the pine.

*Timberwolves-Bucks Preview* ============================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

Minnesota (27-46) at Milwaukee (36-37), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Milwaukee Bucks just improved their position in the Eastern Conference standings. They can partly thank the Minnesota Timberwolves for that.

Milwaukee continues its push for its first playoff berth in three seasons on Wednesday night when the visiting Timberwolves go for their first set of back-to-back wins since December.

With nine games left and a six-game edge over ninth-place Philadelphia, Milwaukee (36-37) would need a massive collapse down the stretch to miss the postseason. The Bucks haven't been playing their best - losing five of six before Monday's 131-102 victory over league-worst Charlotte - but their magic number for clinching a playoff berth is down to three.

"I don't really look at the standings, the seeds and all that," said center Larry Sanders, who had a career-best 24 points and 13 rebounds. "Keep playing well, and we'll be in the playoffs."

The Bucks, though, would probably be best served by avoiding No. 1 seed Miami in the opening round. Milwaukee closed within 1 1/2 games of Boston for the seventh seed on Monday when the Timberwolves (27-46) defeated the Celtics 110-100.

Minnesota won't make the playoffs for a ninth consecutive season, but the team was competitive on its just-completed 2-2 homestand, winning 120-117 over the Los Angeles Lakers last Wednesday and falling 101-93 to Oklahoma City on Friday.

"We're moving the ball better - I think we have a better understanding of what we want to do, especially when Pek (center Nikola Pekovic) is out there," said coach Rick Adelman, whose team last won two in a row during a season-best four-game run from Dec. 7-15. "We know he's going to draw attention going in."

Pekovic, who's having a career year with 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, returned from a one-game injury absence (sprained left ankle) against Boston and finishing with 29 points and five boards. He scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a 95-85 home win over the Bucks on Nov. 30, helping the Timberwolves avoid a third consecutive loss in this series.

If Minnesota is going to end a three-game skid in Milwaukee, Pekovic and the Timberwolves' frontcourt will likely have to slow down Sanders. The third-year center is enjoying the best stretch of his career, averaging 14.1 points and 11.7 rebounds in the last 12 games.

"He is rolling to the basket more," Monta Ellis said Monday after the Bucks' highest-scoring game in four seasons. "He is setting a screen and getting off of it. He is just taking his opportunity."

Sanders did just that in the last matchup with Minnesota, finishing with 10 points, 12 rebounds and matching Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's franchise record with 10 blocks for his only career triple-double.

Milwaukee has won seven of eight at home in this series after losing the previous eight.
