| |  | PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet. | | MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: BRANDON JENNINGS benefitted from the arrival of Monta Ellis last year. He has the offense and system to thrive, and now needs to prove he can be efficient enough to be a star . . . MONTA ELLIS played second fiddle to Jennings last year, and really struggled to shoot the ball. The Bucks now play the kind of tempo he likes, but he'll have to adjust to playing off the ball more often . . . BENO UDRIH won't see a ton of action off the bench considering Jennings and Ellis play so many minutes. If a starter gets hurt, he could step in and hit a lot of threes . . . Second-rounder DORON LAMB has some upside as a future sixth man, but figures to ride the bench this year once his torn elbow ligament heals. FORWARDS: ERSAN ILYASOVA should finally get some respect from Skiles after starring down the stretch last year . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY re-emerged as a legitimate three-point threat, though he doesn't do much else . . . DREW GOODEN's role should shrink with Ilyasova stepping up and Sam Dalembert coming in . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is coming off knee surgery, but he's improving as a rebounder and can play both forward spots off the bench . . . Rookie JOHN HENSON is a defensive stud and does enough as a screener to get decent minutes early . . . TOBIAS HARRIS was a Summer League star, but he's too much of a 'tweener to thrive in the NBA . . . EKPE UDOH provides defense and rebounding off the bench . . . LARRY SANDERS has potential, but this frontcourt is too crowded for him to make an impact. CENTERS: SAM DALEMBERT fell in and out of favor in Houston, but he's exactly what the Bucksneed as a defensive presence in the paint. Milwaukee has numerous players who can man the five in spots (Ekpe Udoh, Drew Gooden), but Dalembert is by far their best defensive option and should see big minutes . . . JOEL PRZYBILLA signed on in August to provide back-end depth on the pine. |

Although his team snapped a losing streak and Monta Ellis had another high-scoring effort, Milwaukee Bucks coach Jim Boylan would like to see a better performance.
The Bucks will try to provide that while recording a fourth straight win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.
After scoring seven points in a loss to Miami on Friday, Ellis had a season-high 39 to lead Milwaukee to a 115-109 victory over visiting Orlando two days later. He had 25 of those points in the fourth quarter while helping the Bucks erase a 13-point deficit and end a three-game slide.
"Monta was pretty amazing there in the fourth quarter. I'm happy that we won the game, but I am really concerned with the way we are playing right now," Boylan said. "It's not good enough. We need to play better. Right now, we are not a very good team."
Despite their recent losing streak, the Bucks (33-32) are a comfortable 7 1/2 games ahead in the race for the Eastern Conference's final playoff berth, but their coach would like to see a little more focus and intensity.
"First of all, we are not in the playoffs. ... We need to turn it up and we need to be a serious team. Right now, we are not playing like a serious team," he said.
Ellis has been locked in for much of the past three weeks, averaging 26.1 points on 50.9 percent shooting in the last 11 games. Milwaukee, though, didn't get too much production from its leading scorer in a 110-104 victory in Portland on Jan. 19.
Brandon Jennings helped his team hold on by providing 30 points and eight assists, and Ersan Ilyasova had 27 points and 14 rebounds. Ellis missed 10 of 15 shots and finished with 13 points.
Ilyasova has 20 or more points while recording three consecutive double-doubles. He had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Jennings scored 21 in the most recent visit from Portland, a 116-94 win April 7.
The Bucks haven't taken four straight in the series since Feb. 2, 1985-Jan. 10, 1986, but will get to face a Blazers team that's struggling to win on the road.
Portland's 101-100 loss to Philadelphia on Monday was its 13th in 15 contests away from home. LaMarcus Aldridge topped 30 points for the second straight game with 32, but missed a potential go-ahead shot just before the buzzer.
"We just came up short," coach Terry Stotts said. "I thought our energy picked up defensively for the whole second half. And we played better, but they made tough shots down the stretch."
Damian Lillard had 27 points, giving him an average of 23.9 over the last 10 games, but couldn't prevent Portland (31-35) from falling to 11th place in the West after the opener to a five-game trip. The Blazers are last among a group of six teams that are within 6 1/2 games of each other for the final three playoff spots.
Portland will wrap up its trip by facing four straight opponents that are currently in position for a postseason berth.
