| |  | ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man." | | MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: BRANDON JENNINGS benefitted from the arrival of Monta Ellis last year. He has the offense and system to thrive, and now needs to prove he can be efficient enough to be a star . . . MONTA ELLIS played second fiddle to Jennings last year, and really struggled to shoot the ball. The Bucks now play the kind of tempo he likes, but he'll have to adjust to playing off the ball more often . . . BENO UDRIH won't see a ton of action off the bench considering Jennings and Ellis play so many minutes. If a starter gets hurt, he could step in and hit a lot of threes . . . Second-rounder DORON LAMB has some upside as a future sixth man, but figures to ride the bench this year once his torn elbow ligament heals. FORWARDS: ERSAN ILYASOVA should finally get some respect from Skiles after starring down the stretch last year . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY re-emerged as a legitimate three-point threat, though he doesn't do much else . . . DREW GOODEN's role should shrink with Ilyasova stepping up and Sam Dalembert coming in . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is coming off knee surgery, but he's improving as a rebounder and can play both forward spots off the bench . . . Rookie JOHN HENSON is a defensive stud and does enough as a screener to get decent minutes early . . . TOBIAS HARRIS was a Summer League star, but he's too much of a 'tweener to thrive in the NBA . . . EKPE UDOH provides defense and rebounding off the bench . . . LARRY SANDERS has potential, but this frontcourt is too crowded for him to make an impact. CENTERS: SAM DALEMBERT fell in and out of favor in Houston, but he's exactly what the Bucksneed as a defensive presence in the paint. Milwaukee has numerous players who can man the five in spots (Ekpe Udoh, Drew Gooden), but Dalembert is by far their best defensive option and should see big minutes . . . JOEL PRZYBILLA signed on in August to provide back-end depth on the pine. |

The Milwaukee Bucks were in discussions earlier this week to acquire Josh Smith from the Atlanta Hawks. That deal never materialized, so the Bucks picked up a different player they hope can help them make the playoffs.
J.J. Redick is expected to make his Bucks debut Saturday night when Smith and the Hawks open their longest road trip of the season.
With Atlanta shopping Smith, who becomes an unrestricted free agent at season's end, the Bucks were one of the teams in trade talks to acquire the Hawks' leading scorer and shot blocker.
"There was never a true offer on the table from Atlanta," Milwaukee general manager John Hammond said. "They never said this is exactly what it will take to get a deal done, but we just continued to negotiate, talk and exchange ideas until the very last moment. It was a possibility."
Smith might have been a nice addition to the Bucks' frontcourt, but instead, the team is welcoming one of the top 3-point shooters in the NBA.
Redick was acquired from Orlando on Thursday along with center Gustavo Ayon and point guard Ish Smith in exchange for rookie Doron Lamb, Beno Udrih and Tobias Harris.
Redick, who like Smith is in the final year of his deal, is averaging a career-high 15.1 points with a career-best 117 3s. The former first-round pick sees no problem playing alongside starting guards Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings, who have accounted for 39.6 percent of the Bucks' field-goal attempts.
"I don't need the ball in my hands a lot," said Redick, whose 45.0 percent shooting from the field is the best of his seven-year career. "I don't need a lot of touches, a lot of dribbles. That's not my game."
While the Bucks (26-27) are hoping Redick's addition can help them at least hang on to their current No. 8 position in the East, the Hawks (30-23) are trying to get closer to the top. They're one game behind Chicago and 1 1/2 back of Brooklyn for fourth place.
This is the first meeting with Milwaukee this season and the opener of a six-game trip for Atlanta, which defeated Sacramento 122-108 on Friday for its third win in four games.
"I'm glad I'm here," said Smith, who had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. "We've got to think about moving forward and keep pushing for better playoff position."
The Bucks have similar thoughts but have lost eight of 10, and they'll be making their run without a player who would have added great versatility. Smith is averaging 8.6 boards, and Milwaukee has outrebounded only one of its last 11 opponents.
"I really thought we were going to get Josh Smith," said Jennings, who averaged 23.7 points and 9.0 assists as the Bucks dropped two of three to Atlanta last season. "Just the fact the trade talks said he wanted to play in Milwaukee and things like that. It didn't happen, so we have to see Josh Smith tomorrow."
The Bucks might not be looking forward to that matchup, as Smith is averaging 20.8 points, 15.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks while posting five consecutive double-doubles against Milwaukee.
Jennings has totaled 65 points in two games since the All-Star break, but the Bucks were swept in a home-and-home set with the Nets.
