KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Rick Carlisle (12th season with Mavericks, 470-416; 18th season overall, 751-627).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Luka Doncic (21.2 ppg), G Delon Wright (12.2 with Memphis), G-F Justin Jackson (8.2), F Kristaps Porzingis (sidelined by knee injury), C Dwight Powell (10.6).
KEY LOSSES: F Dirk Nowitzki, G Devin Harris, C Salah Mejri.
KEY ADDITIONS: Wright, G Seth Curry, F Isaiah Roby.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The world will be watching the Euro pair of Doncic and Porzingis, literally. The Mavericks are headliners internationally now that the 20-year-old rookie of the year from Slovenia and the 7-foot-3 Latvian are finally getting to play together. Dallas held Porzingis out for the last two months last season after the blockbuster trade that brought him from New York, even though he could have played. Their debut together is even more intriguing since it's Dallas' first season without Nowitzki, the German superstar who retired after setting an NBA record by playing all 21 seasons with the same franchise. The biggest question is who among the role players will emerge. Keep an eye on Wright. The Mavericks liked him in the 2015 draft. AD
OUTLOOK: The Mavericks wanted to sign a significant piece in free agency after the trading-deadline addition of Porzingis, who had just been named a 2018 All-Star before the knee injury that sidelined him for 20 months. They had to settle on Wright as a restricted free agent in a sign-and-trade with Memphis, so Dallas will lean heavily on Doncic and Porzingis while trying to get back to the playoffs after missing three straight seasons. It's the longest stretch without the postseason for the franchise since it was among the worst in sports coming out of the 1990s. It won't be easy in the West. The Mavericks will exceed expectations if they contend for a playoff spot.
MIAMI: LAST SEASON: 39-43, finished in 10th place in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Erik Spoelstra (12th season, 523-363).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Justise Winslow (12.6 ppg), G Dion Waiters (12.0), G Jimmy Butler (18.7 with Minnesota and Philadelphia), F Kelly Olynyk (10.0), C Bam Adebayo (8.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Dwyane Wade, G Josh Richardson, C Hassan Whiteside, G Rodney McGruder.
KEY ADDITIONS: Butler, G Tyler Herro, F-C Meyers Leonard.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Butler gets a team to call his own, and assumes the role of locker-room leader in the place of Wade ' who retired after 16 seasons, most of them with Miami. The Heat are hoping for healthier years from Waiters and PG Goran Dragic, after both missed about half of last season. Herro, the No. 13 pick in this year's draft, had a strong summer league and followed that up with big numbers in the preseason so he'll clearly be in the mix somewhere. Adebayo enters his first full year as the starting center, a job he won down the stretch last season, and will get help from fellow bigs Olynyk and Leonard. Winslow wants to be a leader for the group, but has missed 94 games in the last three seasons.
OUTLOOK: The Heat haven't won a playoff series since 2016 and are only 124-122 over the last three seasons, yet believe they can get back into more of a postseason-contender role ' even without Wade, who was the team's best player last season. Getting Butler was a major boost and he'll unquestionably be the key to everything Miami does, though he won't be asked to carry the load by himself. Defense wasn't the problem for Miami last season after the Heat finished No. 2 in the league in points allowed; the biggest issue was inconsistent offense, which figures to get better.
PREVIEW
Slumping Heat seek improvement vs. Mavs

The slumping Miami Heat have lost two straight games to two of the NBA's five-worst teams -- the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.

On Friday, the Heat will play host to the rising Dallas Mavericks, a young team that has won two straight games.

Dallas' stars are two Europeans -- Kristaps Porzingis, 24, and Luca Doncic, who turns 21 on Friday.

"We're still learning," Doncic said of the relatively inexperienced Mavs. "It's not always going to be perfect."

Even so, there's a lot of potential on the Mavs. Doncic, a 6-foot-7, second-year guard from Slovenia, is sixth in the NBA in scoring, averaging 28.7 points. He also leads the team in rebounds (9.6) and assists (8.7).

Porzingis, a 7-3 center from Latvia, leads the team in blocks (1.9) and ranks second in scoring (18.7) and rebounds (9.2).

In Wednesday's 109-103 win over the host San Antonio Spurs, Porzingis had 28 points and 12 rebounds, and Doncic added 26 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds.

"We're getting to know each other and the little details of the game," said Porzingis, a former New York Knicks star who is in his first season playing with Doncic. "We have better rhythm now."

The Heat, meanwhile, have no rhythm at the moment, having lost seven of nine games. Much of that has to do with seven road games during that stretch and the Heat's poor 13-18 road record.

But on Wednesday, the Heat sunk to a new low by losing to Minnesota at home. The Timberwolves entered that game having lost 18 of their previous 19 games overall.

"We just don't know," Heat veteran guard Goran Dragic said of the loss. "It's frustrating. It feels like we're not the same team we were in the first half of the season."

Miami's 23-4 home record is still one of the three best marks in the NBA. But this slump has to be a concern for the Heat.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is trying to steady the proverbial ship, saying -- in essence -- that this too shall pass.

"I just think that this is our period of the season where we have adversity," Spoelstra said.

Friday's game should be interesting because Doncic and Dragic are countrymen. When the Mavs visited Miami last season, there were more than 2,000 Slovenians attending the game, and a similar showing is expected on Friday.

Dragic, who on Wednesday passed Grant Long for 10th place on the Heat career scoring list, is one of the veteran leaders on the team, along with Jimmy Butler and emerging star Bam Adebayo.

Butler leads Miami in scoring (20.5), assists (6.2) and steals (1.8). Adebayo leads the team in rebounds (10.5) and blocks (1.2) while also ranking third in points (16.2) and second in assists (5.1).

Adebayo is playing despite a sprained right ankle. In fact, his streak of consecutive games played is at 144, which puts him in fourth place in franchise history.

Dragic is Miami's top reserve, ranking second in points (16.3) and third in assists (5.0).

The Heat again are expected to be without Tyler Herro and center Meyers Leonard, who have each missed nine straight games due to ankle injuries.

Dallas is without 7-foot center Willie Cauley-Stein, who is expected to miss another couple of games due to personal reasons. Mavs guard Jalen Brunson (shoulder) and power forward Dwight Powell (foot) are also out.
