KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: He was never quite right health-wise late last year (which led to the poor conditioning head coach Dwane Casey cited this summer). Still, if healthy, Kyle Lowry can regain the borderline All-Star form he had two years ago . . . DeMar DeRozan makes a fine living attacking and getting to the line, but he has still yet to add a consistent three-point shot . . . Cory Joseph had quietly developed into one of the league's best back-up point guards in San Antonio, a lock down defender and efficient offensive player . . . Rookie Delon Wright does a lot of things well, but is most likely looking at a developmental year . . . Norman Powell is a big scoring guard who could be a solid bench piece down the line. The Raptors spent big to bring in DeMarre Carroll, a true 3-and-D wing . . . With Amir Johnson signing with Boston, Patrick Patterson has a chance to step into the starting lineup. He's fairly one-dimensional offensively, mostly camping out for corner threes . . . Toronto brought in competition for the power forward spot by signing Luis Scola. He's a mediocre at best defensively, but can take advantage of weaker defenders in the low-post . . . His development seems to have stalled, and Terrence Ross will try to reinvent himself as a sixth man . . . James Johnson has never been capable of handling big minutes, but he's a solid second-unit player who does everything well . . . Bruno Caboclo is still at least a year away from the rotation. Jonas Valanciunas has plenty of talent, but he doesn't do the little things well on offense (like screening) and is a defensive liability. It's why his minutes will continue to be limited . . . Bismack Biyombo is a zero on offense, but he's effective as a rim-protector and rebounder . . . Lucas Nogueira is still coming along as a long-term project.
MIAMI: Goran Dragic will run the offense, as the Heat continue to evolve post-LeBron. He'll also benefit from the return of a pick-and-pop big in Chris Bosh . . . He's on the back nine of his career, but Dwyane Wade is still effective on the offensive end of the court. Durability is another issue . . . They have no need for Mario Chalmers with Dragic in town. Unfortunately, no one seems interested in trading for him . . . Sixth man Gerald Green adds firepower off the bench . . . If Chalmers is dealt, Tyler Johnson would step up as Dragic's primary back-up . . . James Ennis will be battling for a roster spot this fall . . . Josh Richardson is a good athlete with the versatile skill set to become a bench option down the line. Luol Deng will get another shot after a disappointing first season in Miami. He will have to settle for being a fourth or fifth option on offense again this season . . . Drafting in the lottery for the first time in years, the Heat landed an NBA-caliber athlete in Justice Winslow. Like all current NCAA players, he will be making a mammoth leap to NBA competition. He won't see consistent minutes unless he's knocking down shots . . . A knee injury wiped out just about all of Josh McRoberts' first season with the Heat. He'll have to be 100% healthy to earn back a rotation spot this season . . . Udonis Haslem continues to hang around as an effective back-up big man. He even talked about adding a three-point shot this summer. Chris Bosh might be slowed early in the year, but he'll be recovered from his blood-clot scare and should be comfortable in a stretch 4 role . . . Hassan Whiteside will anchor Miami's defense and in general clean up the glass . . . When Miami needs more offense than Whiteside offers, they can turn to Amar'e Stoudemire as a part-time player . . . Chris Andersen is basically a Birdman mascot.
