KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility.
MIAMI: GUARDS: He's a shell of his former self, but the Heat will have to squeeze more regular-season minutes out of DWYANE WADE. His effectiveness could depend on whether or not he finally develops a three-point shot . . . The point guard situation is getting muddied, but the Heat dug deep to re-sign MARIO CHALMERS. He'll top the PG depth chart again . . . NORRIS COLE is likely too small and too erratic to ever be a starter, but he'll continue to play solid minutes with the second unit . . . The Heat seemed to grab SHABAZZ NAPIER on draft night because he's a LeBron James favorite. Now that James is gone, the rookie could be the odd man out in the point guard rotation. He'll have to overcome subpar measurables. FORWARDS: LUOL DENG is most certainly not LeBron James, and he won't fill anything resembling James' new role. He does give them a strong role player, a defensive stopper and secondary scorer . . . JOSH McROBERTS will facilitate the offense at times and generally serve as a floor-spacing, stretch-4. Miami is built to go small with him and Chris Bosh up front . . . DANNY GRANGER is trying to reinvent himself after an injury-filled couple of seasons. He can play both forward spots and might fit best as a stretch-4 in head coach Erik Spoelstra's system . . . UDONIS HASLEM is essentially a mascot during the regular season . . . JAMES ENNIS could break into the rotation later this season. He was tremendous in Summer League play. CENTERS: CHRIS BOSH is the best player on this team by a significant margin. He'll be the focal point of the offense most nights and should flirt with the 20-10 numbers he used to put up in Toronto . . . CHRIS ANDERSEN will often pair with Bosh in the frontcourt, taking some of the defensive heat off Bosh against bigger lineups.

*Suns-Heat Preview* ===================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Phoenix (31-29) at Miami (25-33), 7:30 p.m. EDT

After his role was reduced by an offseason addition, Goran Dragic had strong words for the Phoenix Suns organization when he made it known that he wanted to be traded.

While he's reportedly since apologized for those comments, emotions could run high as Dragic faces the visiting Suns on Monday night for the first time since he was dealt to the Miami Heat less than two weeks ago.

Dragic, who has had a pair of stints with Phoenix over his six seasons, averaged a career-high 20.3 points in 2013-14 before becoming frustrated with how he was used after the acquisition of Isaiah Thomas in July.

He averaged 16.2 points in 52 games while receiving fewer touches than he had been used to. Dragic then upset the Suns' brass when he told reporters, "I don't trust them anymore," and added that he would not re-sign if he was not traded.

Team president Lon Babby called the remarks "unfair and I think unwarranted."

Dragic, however, got his wish at last month's deadline when he was moved along with his brother Zoran to Miami (25-33) in a three-team deal Feb. 19. According to reports, he's since called Suns owner Robert Sarver to apologize.

Although he's back in his more comfortable point guard role, Dragic continues to be inconsistent with his new team.

The veteran has scored 12 or less in three of his five games, including a six-point effort in Saturday's 93-91 home loss to Atlanta. However, he's followed up his previous two subpar efforts with at least 20 points.

The Suns (31-29) have had some difficulty adjusting after trading away both Dragic and Thomas at the deadline, but the offense hadn't been an issue until Saturday's 101-74 home loss to San Antonio.

After averaging 111.8 points on 47.2 percent shooting in their prior six games, they had their lowest scoring half in team history with 24 points in the first and finished with their worst field-goal percentage in almost nine years at 29.8.

Marcus Morris had a team-high 19 points off the bench, but the starters scored a combined 34 while shooting 10 for 40 en route to a 27-point margin that matched the Suns' most one-sided defeat of the season.

Making things worse, newly acquired Brandon Knight's status is uncertain after he left in the first half with a hip pointer.

"It's one of those games," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "I guess the bright side is that they all played bad the same night."

Starting forward Markieff Morris, Marcus' twin, ripped the home fans in frustration after Phoenix had its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 3-9 in its last 12.

The Suns have fallen behind Oklahoma City and New Orleans in the race for the Western Conference's final playoff spot.

Miami, which is 10-17 at American Airlines Arena, looks to avoid a third consecutive loss as it tries to hold on to a half-game lead over Brooklyn for seventh in the East.

Luol Deng is averaging 19.7 points on 54.8 percent shooting in his last three meetings dating to his time with Cleveland. He scored 23 to help Miami win its ninth in a row in this series, 103-97 in Phoenix on Dec. 9.

Miami will have to keep an eye on Marcus Morris and Gerald Green after they teamed for 44 points on 10-of 13 shooting from beyond the arc in the December defeat. Green has hit five 3s in each of his last two against the Heat.
