KEY GAME INFORMATION
PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet.
MIAMI: GUARDS: The regular season goal for DWYANE WADE is to just stay healthy. Even following knee surgery, he's still good enough to pile up numbers, but the minutes won't be there in the regular season . . . That's why the Heat brought in RAY ALLEN. He and Wade will share the floor at times, but Allen should primarily play off the bench. His role will be to knock down the wide-open threes Wade and LeBron James create . . . After all the big plays he made in the postseason, MARIO CHALMERS is entrenched as the starting point guard, despite being plagued by a bad hammy in the preseason . . . Super-quick NORRIS COLE looks like he'll become one of the NBA's better backup point guards . . . If he doesn't retire, the absurdly brittle MIKE MILLER will see limited regular-season minutes . . . TERREL HARRIS will likely make the team because he's willing to play defense. FORWARDS: While another title is their No. 1 priority, LeBRON JAMES has shown no need to rest during the regular season. He'll play full-time minutes and be in the thick of the MVP race . . . CHRIS BOSH remains integral to the offense with his ability to pull opposing bigs away from the basket. His stats don't reflect his actual value . . . SHANE BATTIER will continue to be a defensive specialist whose offensive role is limited to shooting open threes . . . UDONIS HASLEM is another guy who will get held back in the regular season. He should lead their low-post rotation . . . RASHARD LEWIS' knee problems have robbed him of athleticism . . . But Lewis should beat out fellow shooter JAMES JONES for a rotation spot . . . JARVIS VARNADO is a shot-blocking force with little to no offensive game. CENTERS: JOEL ANTHONY will continue to tag-team with Haslem in the middle. Anthony is an absolute negative on the offensive end, but he brings more size and shot-blocking than Haslem . . . DEXTER PITTMAN will be battling for a roster spot. Sexy Dexy has shown no signs of being an NBA-caliber player so far in his career . . . MICKELL GLADNESS is a better alternative than Pittman on both ends of the floor.

*Trail Blazers-Heat Preview* ============================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Portland (25-26) at Miami (34-14), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Eastern Conference-leading Miami Heat continue to roll with LeBron James playing at the highest of levels.

He wasn't very efficient against the Portland Trail Blazers last month.

Looking to continue its home dominance of Western Conference foes, Miami tries to match its longest winning streak of the season Tuesday night against a Portland team that's taken four straight in South Beach.

The Heat (34-14) have strung together five consecutive wins by an average of 11.6 points thanks in large part to James. The three-time NBA MVP became the third player in league history score at least 30 and shoot at least 60 percent in five straight contests Sunday, posting 32 points on 12-of-18 from the field in a 107-97 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Don't take it for granted," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He's making greatness look easy."

Shooting a career-best 56.2 percent, James has shot an even more impressive 71.4 percent over the last five games for Miami, which is looking to win six straight for the third time this season.

"I go out and just play my game," James said. "However the game is played, I try to take its course. Offensively, I'm just comfortable, confident in my ability. ... I just try to make plays for us to win, that's what ultimately it's all about."

The Heat have proven especially formidable at home, where they've compiled a 22-3 record while averaging 107.0 points. Miami has also had its way against the West, going 18-5, including 11-1 on its own court.

"We just try to go out and play our game each and every night, no matter if it's an Eastern Conference team or a Western Conference team," James said. "We understand we got another really good team coming into our building on Tuesday in Portland, and we're looking forward to that one, too."

The Heat enter Tuesday with revenge on their minds after blowing a 12-point lead with under eight minutes to go in a 92-90 loss at Portland on Jan. 10. James had 10 rebounds and nine assists but shot a season-worst 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) to finish with 15 points. That is the only time in his last 69 games, which includes the playoffs, he scored fewer than 20.

Portland (25-26) could have a hard time keeping up this time around if its recent efforts are any indication. Since opening a six-game road trip with last Monday's 100-98 win over Minnesota, the Blazers have allowed an average of 111.0 points in losing three straight.

Portland's woes continued Sunday in a 110-104 loss to Orlando, which had dropped 12 straight and 23 of 25. LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points but rookie Damian Lillard was limited to a season-low four on 1-of-16 shooting.

Lillard, who did have a season-best 12 assists, had averaged 21.4 points over his previous five games for the Blazers, who were outrebounded by the Magic 50-38 and outscored 60-46 in the paint.

"A team like us can't afford to get out played," J.J. Hickson said. "We haven't had that edge that we have had throughout the season."

The Blazers, losers of seven of eight in opposing arenas, conclude their trek Wednesday at New Orleans.

"Miami will be a tough one and New Orleans plays well at home also. It is not like we can't win the next two games and finish this trip at .500," Lillard said. "There are things that we can fix. If things were going south, that means guys are not playing hard and we think that we are better than we are."

In addition to trying to contain James, Portland could have a hard time slowing down Dwyane Wade, who's averaging 27.0 points - 5.9 more than his season mark - over his last three games.

The Blazers have limited the Heat to an average of 94.5 points during their four-game road winning streak.
