KEY GAME INFORMATION
ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man."
MIAMI: GUARDS: The regular season goal for DWYANE WADE is to just stay healthy. Even following knee surgery, he's still good enough to pile up numbers, but the minutes won't be there in the regular season . . . That's why the Heat brought in RAY ALLEN. He and Wade will share the floor at times, but Allen should primarily play off the bench. His role will be to knock down the wide-open threes Wade and LeBron James create . . . After all the big plays he made in the postseason, MARIO CHALMERS is entrenched as the starting point guard, despite being plagued by a bad hammy in the preseason . . . Super-quick NORRIS COLE looks like he'll become one of the NBA's better backup point guards . . . If he doesn't retire, the absurdly brittle MIKE MILLER will see limited regular-season minutes . . . TERREL HARRIS will likely make the team because he's willing to play defense. FORWARDS: While another title is their No. 1 priority, LeBRON JAMES has shown no need to rest during the regular season. He'll play full-time minutes and be in the thick of the MVP race . . . CHRIS BOSH remains integral to the offense with his ability to pull opposing bigs away from the basket. His stats don't reflect his actual value . . . SHANE BATTIER will continue to be a defensive specialist whose offensive role is limited to shooting open threes . . . UDONIS HASLEM is another guy who will get held back in the regular season. He should lead their low-post rotation . . . RASHARD LEWIS' knee problems have robbed him of athleticism . . . But Lewis should beat out fellow shooter JAMES JONES for a rotation spot . . . JARVIS VARNADO is a shot-blocking force with little to no offensive game. CENTERS: JOEL ANTHONY will continue to tag-team with Haslem in the middle. Anthony is an absolute negative on the offensive end, but he brings more size and shot-blocking than Haslem . . . DEXTER PITTMAN will be battling for a roster spot. Sexy Dexy has shown no signs of being an NBA-caliber player so far in his career . . . MICKELL GLADNESS is a better alternative than Pittman on both ends of the floor.

*Hawks-Heat Preview* ====================

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN STATS Senior Writer

Atlanta (12-5) at Miami (13-5), 7:30 p.m. EDT

After an intriguing week in the life of LeBron James, the superstar is excited about the next challenge for his Miami Heat.

James and the Heat will try to cool off the red-hot visiting Atlanta Hawks on Monday night in an early showdown for first place in the Southeast Division.

The reigning league MVP was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year last week to add to his list of numerous honors. On the court, James drew attention for a post-game workout behind closed doors after a dismal 112-92 loss to New York last Thursday.

Miami (13-5) avoided its first three-game slide with Saturday's 106-90 home victory over New Orleans. The Heat lead Atlanta (12-5) by one-half game in the division, and James said he's ready for a game with first place on the line.

"It's always fun," James said. "And it's a divisional opponent and they're playing some really good basketball right now. They had the one loss to Cleveland at home, they didn't win that game but everybody has a little bump."

James is correct since Atlanta's lone defeat in 10 games was a 113-111 loss to the Cavaliers on Nov. 30. The Hawks have opened December with three victories and arrive in South Beach after Saturday's impressive 93-83 victory at Memphis.

Atlanta showed once again why it is one of the league's better defensive teams, limiting the Grizzlies to their lowest point total. The Hawks are allowing 93.6 points per game while holding foes to 43.3 percent shooting.

The Heat were disappointed with their defense during last week's two losses in which they allowed the Wizards and Knicks to shoot 46.5 percent. They limited the Hornets to 44.9 percent Saturday.

"We didn't do everything right," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We still had a handful of breakdowns. But the commitment on the defensive end was better than the past two games."

Miami has won four straight over Atlanta, including a 95-89 road victory Nov. 9. James just missed a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists as he played through right knee pain after getting hurt in a collision with the Hawks' Josh Smith.

James made the clinching jumper with 13.6 seconds left on a night when his best was needed with Dwyane Wade out with a nasty cold.

That contest was part of Atlanta's 3-3 start. The Hawks look like a better team now.

"They've got three point guards that's very quick, three guys that's very quick in Lou Will (Williams), Devin Harris and Jeff Teague and those guys really speed the tempo up, and an All-Star in Al Horford and Josh Smith is really playing at a high level as well," James said.

"We have to do a good job of slowing their point guards down, trying to contain the point of attack and then put a little bit of pressure on those other two guys."

Williams is among the top bench scorers in the NBA with a 14.2 scoring average in his first season with Atlanta. He scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half to key Saturday's win in Memphis.

"Just confidence. Just continue to shoot," Williams said. "I got a layup, and then I was able to get a 3 and it snowballed from there."
