KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON:
COACH: Scott Brooks (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Ish Smith (8.9 ppg with Detroit), G Bradley Beal (25.6 ppg), F Rui Hachimura (19.7 ppg with Gonzaga), F Davis Bertans (8.0 ppg with San Antonio), C Thomas Bryant (10.5 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: F Jeff Green, F Trevor Ariza, F Markieff Morris, C Dwight Howard, F Sam Dekker, F Jabari Parker, F Bobby Portis, G Tomas Satoransky.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Rui Hachimura, G Ish Smith, G-F C.J. Miles, F Moe Wagner, G-F Isaac Bonga, F Davis Bertans, G-F Admiral Schofield, G Justin Robinson, G Justin Anderson, G Isaiah Thomas.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: As Washington tries to find a way forward with a mostly new roster after losing 50 games, everyone in a Wizards uniform will be judged for his possible role in the future. The most scrutiny will fall on two players: rookie Rui Hachimura, a first-round draft pick from Gonzaga, and All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal. With Hachimura, it's about adapting to the pro game and seeing how much potential he has. With Beal, undoubtedly Washington's best player and closest thing now to a transcendent star, it's about whether he can up his level even more ... and where he will attempt to do that. Will he commit to the Wizards and will they build around him? Or will they start over even more completely by trading him?
OUTLOOK: With John Wall out for most, and maybe all, of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon, plus several other offseason injuries, and a wholesale revamping of the roster under way, new GM Tommy Sheppard knows that there is no point in aiming for any particular win total, let alone the playoffs. So instead of the sort of grand pronouncements about quantifiable goals that were so common with this club in the past, Sheppard is emphasizing the importance of development ' figuring out who can do what and who should be a part of the long-term plan. The Wizards are not going to be very good in 2019-20, but they are hoping this will be the start of moving in the right direction.
MEMPHIS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Taylor Jenkins (first season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: F/C Jaren Jackson Jr. (13.8 ppg), G Ja Morant (rookie), C Jonas Valanciunas (15.6), G/F Dillon Brooks (7.5), F Jae Crowder (11.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Mike Conley, G Jevon Carter, G Delon Wright.
KEY ADDITIONS: Morant, G Grayson Allen, F Brandon Clarke, Crowder, G Marko Guduric, F Solomon Hill, G Tyus Jones, G/F Jon Konchar, G De'Anthony Melton, C Miles Plumlee.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Jackson is fully recovered from the bruised right quadriceps muscle that limited his rookie season to 58 games, and the No. 4 pick overall in 2018 has even grown a little bit. Morant played his way into the No. 2 draft pick overall in June, and now the 6-3 guard will get to showcase his speed, passing skills and court vision surrounded by players closer to his talent level than he did in college at Murray State. Valanciunas earned an extension from Memphis and now must prove he can keep producing double-doubles regularly.
OUTLOOK: Marc Gasol and Conley both are gone, and it's up to Jackson and Morant to lead this rebuilding process for Memphis after the Grizzlies revamped the roster as much as possible in one offseason. This season may not be pretty at times, but at least the Grizzlies have hope for the future based on a duo they hope will become big stars. The franchise just may have to wait a couple seasons or more for a return to the postseason.
PREVIEW
Grizzlies to welcome Morant back vs. Wizards

Memphis rookie guard Ja Morant returns to the court Saturday when the Grizzlies take on the visiting Washington Wizards.

He was held out of Friday's 127-114 loss to Milwaukee. The Grizzlies listed him as being out for "injury maintenance" while nursing his back while fellow rookie Brandon Clarke also sat out for the same reason (oblique).

Both Morant and Clarke have made a real impact on Memphis so far this season, but the former has really raised some eyebrows around the NBA. Morant was the second overall pick in this year's draft and is averaging 18.7 points and 6.4 assists per game at the age of 20.

The Grizzlies had back-to-back games with Milwaukee and Washington at home so that's likely why they sat him versus the Bucks, trying to give Morant some early-season rest after battling an injury.

Memphis had won two in a row before that loss.

Jaren Jackson Jr. picked up the slack for Morant and Clarke by scoring a career-high 43 points in the Milwaukee loss thanks to nine 3-pointers. According to the Grizzlies, the 20-year-old is the youngest player in NBA history to make nine triples in a game and the lone player under the age of 21 to do so.

Morant is leading the way as a young team tries to build with a lot of promising talent that's still lacking experience. That is why Jae Crowder of Memphis said that each game is an important learning experience.

"We're just trying to build each game," he told NBA.com. "I feel our young guys are soaking everything in and applying as much of what we're trying to do as possible. It takes time. But it feels good when everything you're trying to do starts to come together."

The Wizards will have to slow Morant -- or try to -- on Saturday and that could prove to be a very tall task as the rookie guard can cause trouble in so many ways.

Morant has gotten off to a great start in his rookie year, and he's certainly impressed Washington coach Scott Brooks.

"He's as dynamic and explosive as any player that has come in (the NBA) in a long time," Brooks told NBC Sports Washington. "You see a lot of (Russell) Westbrook in him where he attacks and is fearless. He plays hard, he puts so much pressure on the defense."

Washington is coming off a 114-107 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday despite a career-best 32 points from Davis Bertans.

Bertans helped the team rally in the fourth quarter as the Wizards made the game close -- they were down by 16 in the third period -- but Washington couldn't do enough. Still, Bertans made eight of 12 3-pointers and helped the Wizards have a chance.

"I was just trying to do my job," Bertans said on the team's website. "They were in there guarding me closer, and I was just trying to come off screens and ... just kind of have the defense gravitate towards me and somebody else can get open. I think we got a lot of good looks at the end."
