KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: Head coach Doc Rivers pretty much hands the offense over to CHRIS PAUL, who is very much in his prime. He has a chance to lead the NBA in assists and steals again . . . He was banged up during the regular season, but J.J. REDICK fit nicely next to Paul when healthy . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will reprise his sixth-man role. He can still fill it up, though he'll lose a bit of playing time if Redick stays healthy . . . JORDAN FARMAR is still hanging around L.A., this time to back up Paul. He'll run point for the second unit . . . C.J. WILCOX is arguably the best shooter in the rookie class, but he's not guaranteed to grab a rotation spot. FORWARDS: He still has flaws in his game, but BLAKE GRIFFIN continues to evolve into a more complete player. His improved shooting, both mid-range and at the line, is a testament to that . . . The Clippers failed to land an upgrade at small forward, so MATT BARNES might be the starter by default again. He's a good glue guy, though his streaky shooting is a frustration . . . The Clippers retained GLEN DAVIS in free agency. "Big Baby" can do some damage against opposing second units during the regular season. CENTERS: Rivers made DeANDRE JORDAN into a full-time player last season. He's a rim protector and rebounder who has made some strides defending in space, but there's a reason the Clippers spent on another big man . . . SPENCER HAWES gives them a different look at the 5-spot, and he can play alongside Jordan as a floor-spacer as well.
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*Clippers-Grizzlies Preview* ============================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (37-21) at Memphis (41-15), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Blake Griffin's absence has come at a particularly inopportune time for the Los Angeles Clippers, who are in the midst of a challenging portion of their schedule.

They'll try to slow their slide down the standings without Griffin by avoiding a fourth straight loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.

Griffin is expected to be out at least another two weeks after having surgery to remove a staph infection on Feb. 9. The Clippers (37-21) have fared reasonably well without their leading scorer (22.5 ppg), going 4-3 in a stretch that included six games against teams in postseason position.

Jamal Crawford has elevated his scoring average 15.7 from to 21.6 in that span to help compensate for Griffin's absence and the Clippers are actually averaging more points (110.0) since losing Griffin after previously scoring 106.5 per game.

They've fallen to sixth place in the Western Conference during a 4-6 stretch, however, after previously being 2 1/2 games behind the second-place Grizzlies. Seven of their next nine contests are also against playoff contenders and the visit to Memphis is the first of six road games in that span. Los Angeles has dropped five of six away from home.

"We still have a ways to go," Crawford told the team's official website. "You don't want to be playing your best ball right now, but you want to start building, especially heading toward the end of the season."

Tempo figures to be key as Los Angeles plays at the league's 12th-fastest pace while Memphis ranks 26th. The Grizzlies won that battle of wills in a 90-87 road victory on Monday as the teams played at a pace even slower than what Memphis averages.

Chris Paul had to carry the Clippers offensively, scoring 30 with 10 assists, but Los Angeles was bogged down by Crawford, J.J. Redick and Spencer Hawes going a combined 11 of 39.

Paul had the ball stolen by Mike Conley with the Clippers trailing by one with two seconds left, however.

"He's a competitor," Glen Davis told the team's official website. "Without his 30 points (Monday), we wouldn't even be in the game. It's just one possession. I'm going to ride with him until the end. If he had another chance, I'd bet on him again."

The Grizzlies, who average a league-best 47.2 points in the paint and rank fifth allowing 39.3, outscored the Clippers 40-26 in the paint.

Los Angeles, which is shooting 47.2 percent, has been held to 91.3 points per game on 41.5 percent shooting during a three-game skid in the series.

Memphis (41-15) shot 41.5 percent while splitting a four-game trip, losing 102-90 in Sacramento on Wednesday after wins in Portland and Los Angeles. The Kings had lost six of eight and the Grizzlies had been 22-3 against sub-.500 teams.

"I thought we were lackadaisical as a team, coming off of two huge wins," Tony Allen told the team's official website. "I thought we didn't respect them and they were the aggressors tonight and they played with a lot of passion and normally that's us. "

The Grizzlies have won 11 of 12 at home while limiting opponents to 88.4 points per game, including 35.7 in the paint.

Conley, who scored 18 against the Clippers earlier this week, is 12 of 38 from 3-point range (31.6 percent) in 10 games since spraining his left wrist in a Jan. 26 win over Orlando. He had been shooting 41.9 percent from deep previously. He is hitting 43.0 percent from beyond the arc at home compared to 37.1 on the road.
