KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*76ers-Grizzlies Preview* =========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Philadelphia (8-34) at Memphis (30-12), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies had to grind out a win against the Philadelphia 76ers last month.

The 76ers will travel for Saturday night's matchup, however, and the road has often proved unkind to them.

Memphis (30-12) has won five of six with two of those victories decided by six points or fewer and another in double overtime. The Grizzlies had to go through 14 ties and six lead changes before taking control in the fourth quarter in Wednesday's 92-86 win over visiting Toronto.

Memphis was outrebounded 21-9 on the offensive glass and 50-45 overall, but held the Raptors to 31.8 percent shooting and a 5-of-28 performance from 3-point range. Marc Gasol led the way with 26 points, and Zach Randolph extended his season-high streak of double-doubles to seven with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

"It wasn't the prettiest game," guard Mike Conley said. "It was a tough game for us. Nothing came easy. The ball didn't bounce our way very often, but we found a way."

Conley had a career-high 36 points and hit the tying 3-pointer just before the end of regulation in a 120-115 overtime win against Philadelphia on Dec. 13. Randolph contributed 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and 11 rebounds.

The lowly 76ers (8-35) enter this one having lost four in a row, wasting a 15-0 lead in Friday's 91-86 home loss to Toronto.

Philadelphia has also dropped eight of nine on the road with those losses coming by an average of 24.8 points. The 76ers, who have been outscored by an average of 21.7 points in losing their last four road games in the second half of a back-to-back, suffered one of their most lopsided defeats of the season in Monday's 111-76 drubbing at Washington.

They've also lost 15 of 16 on the road against Western Conference foes, which includes a 117-95 defeat at Memphis on April 11. The Grizzlies, 17-5 at home this season, have won three of the last four meetings in Memphis.

The Grizzlies won't have to face Philadelphia leading scorer Tony Wroten in this game. Wroten, averaging 16.9 points, is sidelined indefinitely with a partially torn ACL that's kept him out since Jan. 13 and will require surgery. He had 17 in the first matchup.

The 76ers did get Nerlens Noel back Friday after a one-game absence due to illness. He played with Michael Carter-Williams for the first time since giving veiled criticisms of the Philadelphia point guard's handling of the offense after the loss in Washington.

Noel called the Wizards "a team that likes to pass the ball. It's as simple as that. They've got very unselfish players."

Carter-Williams had nine assists Friday, his most in seven games, and used one of those passes to set up Noel for a dunk in the fourth quarter.

"As a group, we've had so many discussions on passing, playing together and extra passes," coach Brett Brown said. "I saw so many signs of tremendous improvement tonight. ... As a group, I thought we did a nice job of playing together."

Carter-Williams had one of his two triple-doubles this season in the loss to Memphis, totaling 16 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Robert Covington had 24 points, one shy of matching a career high, and Hollis Thompson tied his personal best with 21 points.
