|
| | | UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is likely the lead guard here, though it's really by default. He doesn't have the athleticism to make a lot of plays in the lane, and will have to rely on difficult shot-making . . . He continues to steadily improve, and there could be a bigger role available for ALEC BURKS. He'll have to develop a more consistent three-point shot before he really breaks out though . . . DANTE EXUM is an electrifying athlete, but he's making an enormous jump from essentially high school ball in Australia. He could be a gem in the long run, but don't expect him to do much as a rookie . . . TOURE' MURRY will likely play some garbage minutes. FORWARDS: He ascended to the alpha role in Utah, but GORDON HAYWARD had some struggles with the extra defensive attention. He should improve somewhat, as he knows what's coming, and has added a runner to his repertoire . . . DERRICK FAVORS will play more at the 4-spot this season, and he has the strength to power his way to easy baskets. He's a potential double-double guy . . . RODNEY HOOD had an up-and-down year at Duke despite his physical gifts. He has an NBA-caliber combination of size and athleticism, but right now he's a streaky shooter with a lot of rough edges on his game . . . TREVOR BOOKER is a solid second-unit big man, a defensive bruiser and good screener on offense . . . JEREMY EVANS can dunk, but provides little else . . . STEVE NOVAK will never be a full-time player, but he's still one of the league's elite shooters. CENTERS: He was disappointing last season, but ENES KANTER still has some upside on the offensive end of the floor. How he and Favors will mesh is yet to be seen . . . RUDY GOBERT is a shot-blocking fool, but still ultra-raw | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system. |

*Jazz-Grizzlies Preview* ========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Utah (8-20) at Memphis (21-5), 8:00 p.m. EDT
There's no understating Zach Randolph's importance to the success of the Memphis Grizzlies, but they're not about to use his absence as an excuse for their slump.
Randolph likely will sit out a second straight game as Memphis looks to avoid a season-worst third consecutive defeat by winning a fifth straight meeting with the visiting Utah Jazz on Monday night.
Memphis (21-6) won six in a row before Randolph suffered a right knee injury in Friday's 103-97 home loss to Chicago. An MRI revealed no significant damage, but the soreness kept Randolph out of Sunday's 105-91 loss at Cleveland.
"He's a warrior, and I just thought taking a night off isn't the worst thing in the world," coach David Joerger said. "A game or two can help you over the long haul."
Marc Gasol scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Cavaliers, while Jon Leuer had 16 and seven boards in his first start of the season in place of Randolph.
Tony Allen missed his third straight game with a scratched cornea for the Grizzlies, who shot 1 of 16 from 3-point range.
"We play who we have," Gasol said. "Whoever's not here is not here. Trust me, we have enough talent in this locker room not just to win (Sunday) but to win the same amount of games we've won so far.
"I have a lot of faith in the people and the personnel that we have. It was not about not having those two outstanding players."
Memphis will play its fifth game in seven nights against the Jazz.
"We didn't play with enough energy and force, whether that be legs, focus or whatnot," Joerger said.
Utah (8-20) is in the midst of a similarly tough stretch and will complete a six-game road trip with its third game in four nights. It won two straight for the first time this season before falling 104-86 to Charlotte on Saturday.
The Jazz shot just 38.8 percent and fell behind by eight after one quarter.
"Our start hurt us," coach Quin Snyder said. "They had a couple of easy buckets early and it made us even more tired."
Alec Burks (3 for 13) and Trey Burke (4 for 13) each had particularly bad shooting nights and finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Burke is shooting 31.6 percent over his last three.
Snyder refused to make excuses.
"Road trips and back-to-backs are tough, but we'd better get used to it," Snyder said. "That's life in the NBA. We can acknowledge that there's some fatigue involved, but at the same time we can still come out and play well. These are hard games to win, but it's possible."
Rudy Gobert didn't seem fazed, hitting 5 of 6 from the field while scoring 11 points and grabbing a career high-tying 12 rebounds off the bench.
"He had some energy," Snyder said. "He seemed like he had some bounce and freshness."
Snyder hopes that rubs off on the rest of the team before this contest. Utah has lost five straight in Memphis, including a 96-86 defeat in the most recent matchup there March 19.
Randolph had 21 points and 11 rebounds in that game, while Gasol added 20 and 10.
