KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*Bulls-Grizzlies Preview* =========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Chicago (15-9) at Memphis (21-4), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Even a brutal stretch against quality opponents hasn't slowed the Memphis Grizzlies, who have extended the best start in franchise history with yet another winning streak.

Memphis again will be tested by a pair of Eastern Conference contenders beginning Friday night at home against a Chicago Bulls team hoping to have Derrick Rose back.

The Grizzlies (21-4) are seeking a season-best seventh straight victory, though the last two haven't come easy. They ended Golden State's 16-game winning streak Tuesday with a 105-98 victory, then defeated San Antonio 117-116 in three overtimes the next night.

Marc Gasol scored 26 points and banked in a 3-pointer at the end of regulation after Memphis blew a 23-point lead. Zach Randolph added 21 and 12 rebounds, while Mike Conley finished with 14 and 10 assists.

"This was really a gut-check type of win," Conley said. "For us to stay mentally focused, withstand runs, execute down the stretch and make plays regardless of the (opponent), we fought through."

The Grizzlies have gone 14-2 against the much deeper West and have faced only one Eastern team that currently has a record above .500, losing 96-92 at Toronto on Nov. 19.

That will change with this matchup against Chicago (16-9) before Memphis travels to face Cleveland and LeBron James on Sunday. The Grizzlies are 7-2 against the East.

Coach Dave Joerger has continued to instill confidence in his club, and his players have responded.

"He can draw up some crazy stuff," Conley said. "He's really good at that, especially late-game situations. I think that's why we execute so well because we know it's going to be a great play. We just have to go out and do it ourselves and trust in it."

Conley may draw a tough assignment in this contest if Rose plays after sitting out Chicago's 103-97 win over New York on Thursday with an illness - yet another setback for the former MVP who had played the previous 11 games.

Taj Gibson also didn't play because of an ankle injury, though he'll make the trip to Memphis. Joakim Noah missed the previous four games with a sore ankle and showed some rust by shooting 1 of 8 from the field, but he grabbed 13 rebounds.

It's unclear if Rose will be ready by tip-off, but the Grizzlies have plenty of others to worry about if he's not in the lineup. Jimmy Butler scored a career-high 35 points against the Knicks, and Pau Gasol - Marc's older brother - added 20 and seven rebounds.

"He's playing extremely well, with a lot of confidence, with a lot of aggressiveness," Gasol said of Butler. "He's asserting himself every single game at both ends of the floor."

Butler is averaging a career-high 21.5 points while shooting 48.6 percent.

"I don't want to be a star," Butler said. "I just want to be a decent role player on a really good team."

This matchup will be the 18th between the Gasol brothers since Marc entered the league in 2008. Pau, then playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Marc had 14 and 12 the last time they faced each other Feb. 26.

Memphis has won four of the last five meetings with Chicago, which played without Rose in each contest during that stretch.
