KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: KOBE BRYANT is 35 and coming off a ruptured Achilles. Even if he is ready for the season opener (as expected), Achilles injuries have drained the athleticism out of younger men . . . STEVE NASH enters the year healthy, but the training staff has discussed a minutes cap for the 39-year-old point guard . . . NICK YOUNG could grab that other starting wing spot, opposite his boyhood idol. How those two gunners could co-exist is something we'd love to see . . . STEVE BLAKE looked good in this offense last season, but is strictly a back-up . . . JODIE MEEKS might shoot his way into a much bigger role this season . . . XAVIER HENRY will need to prove a lot to earn himself minutes . . . What are you complaining about, Lakers fans? You got JORDAN FARMAR back! FORWARDS: PAU GASOL should benefit from the departure of Dwight Howard, who never bought into head coach Mike D'Antoni's offense or even tried to mesh with Gasol. D'Antoni's up-tempo, Euro-style system is perfectly suited to Gasol's strengths. And when Nash sits, they can run a lot of sets through their big man . . . WESLEY JOHNSON will have a chance to grab the vacant small forward spot. The former No. 4 overall pick has been a big disappointment through three seasons, but he looked decent as a spot-up shooter last seasons . . . JORDAN HILL will be the first big man off the bench in a thin frontcourt rotation. He can rebound and clean up around the basket a bit . . . ELIAS HARRIS keeps the Gonzaga connection going . . . SHAWNE WILLIAMS has had success for D'Antoni, but he is far removed from his days contributing for the Knicks. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN is the consolation prize after Dwight Howard's departure. Yes, it's a monstrous downgrade talent-wise, but as a skilled 7-footer, Kaman at least fits D'Antoni's system better . . . ROBERT SACRE has a chance to develop into a useful back-up center.
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: MIKE CONLEY has steadily improved every season. He's now a borderline All-Star point guard . . . TONY ALLEN is back as the defensive half of Memphis' SG platoon. He's a favorite of new head coach David Joerger, the mastermind of the Grizzlies' suffocating defense as an assistant . . . JERRYD BAYLESS is on the cusp of being one of the NBA's top sixth men. He's the only pure scorer they have on the perimeter . . . MIKE MILLER's minutes will be limited in the regular season, but he's still an effective bench option with his long-range shooting . . . Ultra-athletic rookie JAMAAL FRANKLIN seems like a future rotation guy if/when he grasps Joerger's defensive schemes. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH has taken a back seat to Marc Gasol, but Z-Bo is still a dangerous low-post scorer. He might give way to Ed Davis a little more often when Memphis needs defense . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE brought another quality defender to Memphis at last season's trade deadline. He's no better than a fifth option on offense, though . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is one of the only shooters Memphis has, and he seems ready for a bigger role after a strong postseason performance. If nothing else, he's the heir apparent to Prince . . . ED DAVIS seems ready for a bigger role, but it's not coming behind Randolph and Gasol. He's a back-up for at least one more season . . . JON LEUER gives the Grizzlies another savvy reserve big. CENTERS: He's a bit overrated defensively (good, but not Defensive Player of the Year good), but MARC GASOL has emerged as the centerpiece of the Memphis offense. He's one of the league's best passing big men, to go along with some skill in the post . . . KOSTA KOUFOS gives them another 7-footer who can move the ball, though his role will be much smaller than it was in Denver.

*Lakers-Grizzlies Preview* ==========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (19-38) at Memphis (31-24), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies are contending for another Western Conference playoff berth in part because of their recent success at home.

The Grizzlies, though, will get fewer chances to their court down the stretch and will try to take advantage of a visit from the struggling Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

Memphis (31-24) appeared that it might struggle to claim a playoff spot for the fourth straight season after a 15-19 start, but it has won 16 of 21 since - including nine of its last 11 at home. That surge has pulled the Grizzlies within 1 1/2 games of Phoenix for eighth place in the West.

Memphis, though, will play 16 of its final 27 games on the road and will have just nine at home after this weekend. The Grizzlies will try to earn a season high-tying fourth consecutive victory at FedExForum by sending the Lakers (19-38) to their 26th loss in 32 games.

Los Angeles was blown out 118-98 at East-leading Indiana on Tuesday. With a career-high 23 points, recently acquired forward Kent Bazemore was the only Laker to score more than 15.

Bazemore was part of a three-player deal with Golden State last Wednesday, and his new club produced just 16 points in the third quarter Tuesday.

"We'll go back and watch the film and get a better idea of how badly we played," coach Mike D'Antoni said.

Despite its recent struggles, Los Angeles had won back-to-back road games before Tuesday's loss. The Lakers have split their two matchups with the Grizzlies this season, with each team winning on the other's home floor.

Los Angeles, though, is 7-25 since its 96-92 win in Memphis on Dec. 17 and 4-13 on the road.

The Grizzlies will try to add to the Lakers' woes with a fifth win in six games. Memphis rallied from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter in Charlotte on Saturday but couldn't close out the Bobcats in a 92-89 loss that ended their four-game winning streak.

Mike Conley's jumper with 51 seconds left gave the Grizzlies a short-lived 87-86 lead. He scored a team-best 16 points but missed a pair of potential game-tying 3-pointers in the final seven seconds.

"We wanted to win, but the Charlotte Bobcats were the aggressors," guard Tony Allen said. "They were physical. ... They pretty much outworked us tonight."

Memphis has outworked Los Angeles on the glass this season by a 100-77 margin, and Zach Randolph has 27 of those rebounds along with 46 points. Randolph had a season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds in an 89-86 win in Los Angeles on Nov. 15.

Jodie Meeks is the top scorer against the Grizzlies among healthy Lakers, averaging 19.0 points on 57.7 percent shooting. Meeks had 25 points and made 10 of 16 shots in the Nov. 15 loss, which currently injured star Kobe Bryant (knee) also sat out.

Former Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol had 21 points and nine rebounds in the victory in Memphis on Dec. 17. Nick Young, who scored 18 points in each game, is out with a sprained left ankle.

The Grizzlies won four in a row at home Jan. 10-17.
