|
| | | ORLANDO: GUARDS: With Dwight Howard gone, this becomes JAMEER NELSON's team on the offensive end. Injuries slowed him a year ago, but he still does a nice job creating his own scoring chances . . . ARRON AFFLALO will provide some much-needed defense on the perimeter, a huge team weakness that will be exploited in the post-Howard era. He'll be a No. 2 or 3 option on the offensive end as well . . . J.J. REDICK has a chance for a bigger role in what should be a transitional year in Orlando. He's no more of a defensive liability than Nelson . . . CHRISTIAN EYENGA was a throw-in during the Dwight Howard trade and defends well enough to earn a roster spot . . . ISHMAEL SMITH will back up Nelson once he returns from a shoulder injury . . . E'TWAUN MOORE has played well enough in the preseason to spell Nelson too. FORWARDS: HEDO TURKOGLU still has some value as a point forward, though his minutes could shrink as Orlando rebuilds . . . GLEN DAVIS shined in Howard's absence last year. He's inefficient, but aggressive and willing to throw his weight around . . . Keep an eye on ANDREW NICHOLSON; the rookie is a crafty scorer who can shoot away from the basket . . . QUENTIN RICHARDSON will chug along as an injury-prone, three-point specialist . . . AL HARRINGTON is coming off a couple knee surgeries and may not have much left in the tank . . . MOE HARKLESS is athletic, versatile, and could get a long look in the second half of the year . . . GUSTAVO AYON is a capable big body who can play some center . . . JUSTIN HARPER will be buried on the bench . . . JOSH McROBERTS is not good. CENTERS: Davis figures to see a lot of minutes at center, but NIKOLA VUCEVIC is a much better defensive option. He's limited offensively, but could start grabbing more minutes in the middle as the year goes on . . . KYLE O'QUINN is a big body who can score around the basket. He has a rough transition ahead of him as an average athlete from a small school. | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. |

*Magic-Grizzlies Preview* =========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Orlando (15-39) at Memphis (35-18), 8:00 p.m. EDT
While their next game likely won't prove as intense as their last one, the Memphis Grizzlies aren't taking the opponent lightly, even if it is one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference.
The Grizzlies will seek a sixth consecutive win when they face the short-handed Orlando Magic on Friday night.
Memphis (35-18) has thrived while facing mostly sub-.500 opponents lately but had to hold off surging Toronto and former leading scorer Rudy Gay for an 88-82 win Wednesday.
"It was very much like a playoff game with the way the attitudes were and the emotions out there," said guard Mike Conley, who tied for the team with 17 points.
All-Star forward Zach Randolph had 17 points and 18 rebounds as the Grizzlies improved to 6-3 since trading Gay in a three-team deal Jan. 30.
"We're finding our groove but we can't stop," Randolph said. "We've got to constantly push and get better because all these games are important. We've got to get ready for the next game Friday."
In its next game, Memphis will face an Orlando team that's 3-26 in its last 29 and 1-15 since Jan. 18. The Magic (15-39) have also dropped nine straight on the road for their longest such skid since losing a franchise-worst 16 in a row in Jan. 27-March 21, 2006.
Orlando, 2-9 all-time in Memphis and losers in four straight visits, likely won't have Jameer Nelson available to help end that drought.
The point guard was diagnosed with a strained tendon in his left knee Thursday and is expected to be re-evaluated when Orlando returns from its two-game trip Saturday.
"I made a move and it was a weird feeling," Nelson said after Wednesday's 111-96 loss in Dallas. "My knee gave out and when it did, I fell and banged it on the ground so it was a double whammy."
The Magic will also be without J.J. Redick, who was among four players the team dealt away before Thursday's trade deadline. The shooting guard, who is averaging career highs in points (15.1) and field goal percentage (45.0), was sent to Milwaukee along with Gustavo Ayon and Ish Smith for Doron Lamb, Tobias Harris and Beno Udrih.
Orlando also dealt Josh McRoberts to Charlotte for Hakim Warrick. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, got Dexter Pittman and a second-round draft pick from Miami for the rights to Ricky Sanchez.
With a fuller roster, Orlando was having trouble slowing down opponents, giving up at least 104 points in each of its last five games.
The Magic have allowed the Grizzlies to reach the century mark once in the past eight visits to Memphis but are averaging 87.6 points during that stretch.
They scored just nine in the opening quarter in last season's only matchup, an 88-76 loss in Memphis on April 26. Marc Gasol had a team-best 22 points for the Grizzlies and is averaging 18.5 on 65.0 percent shooting in his last four games against Orlando.
With Gasol's help, Memphis will try to post its first four-game home win streak since a season-high five consecutive victories Nov. 23-Dec. 4.
The Grizzlies and Magic will meet for the final time this season March 3 in Orlando.
