KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system.
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.

*Pelicans-Lakers Preview* =========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

New Orleans (39-34) at Los Angeles (20-53), 10:30 p.m. EDT

While they haven't fared well in recent matchups with playoff-contending teams, the New Orleans Pelicans are capitalizing on an advantageous part of their schedule.

With Ryan Anderson's return imminent, the Pelicans seek a third straight victory as they try to sweep the season series from the lowly Los Angeles Lakers in the opener to a three-game road trip Wednesday night.

New Orleans (39-34) lost to three of the Western Conference's top five teams as part of a season high-tying four-game losing streak before bouncing back with two wins by a combined 36 points against easier competition.

They took a 102-88 victory over Sacramento on Friday, and Anthony Davis scored 28 points in a 110-88 win against Minnesota on Sunday. The Pelicans shot 57.3 percent and limited the Timberwolves to 2-of-12 shooting from 3-point range.

"This is a huge three games and that's why we wanted to play well tonight - to give us that confidence going into the road trip and try to get all three," Davis said. "We know where we are."

New Orleans will face two teams that are eliminated from the playoff race on its trip, the Lakers (20-53) and the Kings. Taking advantage of those matchups is crucial as they try to make up a 2 1/2-game deficit on eighth-place Oklahoma City.

The Thunder's next four games are against teams ahead of them in the conference.

The Pelicans have gone 11-7 since Anderson has been sidelined with a sprain knee. Anderson, who averages 14.6 points, says it's his "full intention" to return sometime on the trip.

"Ryan's a really good player in shooting, rebounding and spacing the floor. All that stuff helps a number of guys on our team," coach Monty Williams said.

The Pelicans haven't needed too much assistance from Anderson in this season's three matchups with the Lakers as he's averaged 11.3 points. Their four-game winning streak over Los Angeles is easily their longest win streak in the series.

Anderson had six points on 2-of-7 shooting in the most recent meeting, a 96-80 home win Jan. 21. Davis had 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting and has converted at 67.7 percent during the win streak against the Lakers.

Los Angeles is returning home after ending its longest road trip of the season with a thrilling 113-111 overtime victory against Philadelphia. Jordan Clarkson, who provided the winning layup with 0.7 seconds left, had 26 points and a career-best 11 assists.

"He's not afraid of the moment," coach Byron Scott said. "You've got to like to that."

Clarkson averaged 21.6 points on 51.3 percent shooting, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds during the 2-3 trek. The Lakers' other win on the trip came against last-place Minnesota.

Jeremy Lin missed the last two games with an illness and his status is unclear. He was averaging 21.3 points and shooting 50.0 percent in the four contests before getting sick.
