|
| | | UTAH: GUARDS: MO WILLIAMS will get a crack at running the point in Utah. He's more of a combo guard, but he'll do fine in an offense that revolves around the bigs . . . RANDY FOYE is a gunning combo guard who will step in as Utah's sixth man . . . ALEC BURKS started to come on late last year, making Raja Bell expendable. He'll come off the bench, but if he can start knocking down perimeter shots, he's in for a much bigger role . . . Yeah, that's right, EARL WATSON and JAMAAL TINSLEY are both still around. And they're both riding pine in Salt Lake . . . KEVIN MURPHY is a cagey scorer from tiny Tennessee Tech (no word on his Golden Tee skills). FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP was Utah's best all-around player last season and will be playing for a new contract. He should be able to keep his minutes despite Utah's young bigs behind him . . . GORDON HAYWARD will probably slide to the two. He has a chance for a breakout year after a strong finish to 2011-12 . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS gets a fresh start in Utah after a disappointing run in Atlanta. He figures to have a similar complementary role with the Jazz . . . DERRICK FAVORS is a long-term solution in the frontcourt. His offensive game is coming on, and he's already a far better defender than Al Jefferson . . . Slam dunk champion JEREMY EVANS and DeMARRE CARROLL will both provide energy off the bench. CENTERS: Like Millsap, AL JEFFERSON will hit free agency after the season. He's an incredibly limited player, a great scorer in the low post, but incapable of any other contributions and a huge liability on defense . . . ENES KANTER is still a few years away from a starting job. He has some rough edges to his game, but really had no problem adjusting to the physicality of the NBA. | | LA LAKERS: GUARDS: Coach Mike Brown will reportedly turn the offensive gameplan over to STEVE NASH, but it's tough to picture a smooth transition after so many years of iso-heavy play in L.A. Don't be surprised if Nash has a tough adjustment . . . KOBE BRYANT will also have to learn to play with the ball out of his hands more often. He still figures to force some hold-and-wait basketball when he can . . . STEVE BLAKE will be in the old Derek Fisher role, coming off the bench to shoot corner threes . . . CHRIS DUHON and DARIUS MORRIS will battle for that No. 3 point guard spot . . . JODIE MEEKS will back up Bryant and provide some long-range shooting off the bench . . . The young guys, ANDREW GOUDELOCK and second-rounder DARIUS JOHNSON-ODOM, will bounce between the bench and the D-League. FORWARDS: If L.A. redesigns their offense to fit Nash, PAU GASOL should thrive. He's adjusted his game to fit with Kobe's iso play, but Gasol can make the passes and cuts to create quick buckets in a Euro-style offense . . . METTA WORLD PEACE looked done early last season but rebounded for a solid second half. He's a distant fifth option on offense, but can still defend . . . ANTAWN JAMISON will likely fill a sixth-man role. His skill set is too narrow to play a lot of minutes with the starters . . . JORDAN HILL is in the rotation. He did a nice job rebounding and clearing out space last year . . . DEVIN EBANKS figures to be bumped out of the rotation by Jamison. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD's back remains a bit of a concern, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him sit out a handful of regular season games. But when he plays, he'll put up the same kind of monster production that he had in Orlando . . . ROBERT SACRE will be lucky to make the roster. |

*Jazz-Lakers Preview* =====================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Utah (11-10) at Los Angeles (9-11), 9:30 p.m. EDT
Still trying to adjust to a new coach and life without three key members of the rotation, the Los Angeles Lakers are focused on taking one small step at a time.
The Lakers will try to begin working their way back to the .500 mark Sunday night when they host the Utah Jazz, who could be without two impact frontcourt players of their own.
Los Angeles (9-11) fell to 4-6 under coach Mike D'Antoni with a 114-108 loss at Oklahoma City on Friday night.
Steve Nash isn't expected back until at least next week and Steve Blake is out at least six weeks with a torn abdominal muscle, leaving third-stringer Chris Duhon as the starting point guard.
Making matters worse, All-Star forward Pau Gasol has averaged just 10.1 points on 38.8 percent shooting since D'Antoni took over and could miss his fourth straight game because of tendinitis in both knees.
The Lakers, however, still have Kobe Bryant, the NBA's scoring leader at 28.4 per game. Bryant finished with 35 as Los Angeles cut a 19-point deficit down to four in the final minute Friday.
Dwight Howard added 23 points and 18 rebounds and even improved at the free-throw line, where he's shooting a league-low 47.7 percent. He shot 5 for 7 against the Thunder after making 12 of 24 in his two previous contests.
"It's not like we're going to get together and start winning right away," Howard said. "We're learning how to play together. We're getting better. This is not on anybody's time table but ours."
While it hasn't translated into many wins, Los Angeles has at least been better offensively lately, averaging 108.2 points in its last five games after scoring 96.4 in its previous five.
That could continue against a Utah team that has lost nine of 12 on the road, where it is allowing 108.2 points per game.
The Jazz (11-10) closed a three-game homestand with a 131-99 rout of Toronto on Friday. It was only the sixth time since the 1997-98 season that Utah scored 130 points or more in regulation.
After going 1 for 10 from 3-point range in a win over Orlando on Wednesday, the Jazz came back to hit 13 of 23 from long range - the sixth-highest total in team history.
Marvin Williams, Randy Foye and DeMarre Carroll each made three 3-pointers. Foye ranks among the NBA leaders with 51 3-pointers this season.
As one of the best fast-break teams (15.9 points per game) in the Western Conference, Utah might be best served pushing tempo after Los Angeles was outscored 26-8 in that area on Friday.
The Jazz outscored the visiting Lakers 15-7 on the break in a 95-89 victory on Nov. 7 - the last game for coach Mike Brown before he was fired by Los Angeles.
While Bryant paced the Lakers with 29 points, Foye scored 17 - including five 3-pointers - and Al Jefferson had 18 and 10 rebounds as the Jazz won their third in a row over Los Angeles.
"We've just got to play Utah Jazz basketball and not worry about what the Lakers are doing and I think we'll have a great chance," Foye said.
Utah, however, might be without leading scorer Jefferson (back spasms) and reserve forward Derrick Favors (plantar fasciitis) again. Both are considered game-time decisions after missing Friday's contest.
