KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position.
LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: Head coach Doc Rivers pretty much hands the offense over to CHRIS PAUL, who is very much in his prime. He has a chance to lead the NBA in assists and steals again . . . He was banged up during the regular season, but J.J. REDICK fit nicely next to Paul when healthy . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will reprise his sixth-man role. He can still fill it up, though he'll lose a bit of playing time if Redick stays healthy . . . JORDAN FARMAR is still hanging around L.A., this time to back up Paul. He'll run point for the second unit . . . C.J. WILCOX is arguably the best shooter in the rookie class, but he's not guaranteed to grab a rotation spot. FORWARDS: He still has flaws in his game, but BLAKE GRIFFIN continues to evolve into a more complete player. His improved shooting, both mid-range and at the line, is a testament to that . . . The Clippers failed to land an upgrade at small forward, so MATT BARNES might be the starter by default again. He's a good glue guy, though his streaky shooting is a frustration . . . The Clippers retained GLEN DAVIS in free agency. "Big Baby" can do some damage against opposing second units during the regular season. CENTERS: Rivers made DeANDRE JORDAN into a full-time player last season. He's a rim protector and rebounder who has made some strides defending in space, but there's a reason the Clippers spent on another big man . . . SPENCER HAWES gives them a different look at the 5-spot, and he can play alongside Jordan as a floor-spacer as well.

*Raptors-Clippers Preview* ==========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Toronto (22-7) at Los Angeles (20-10), 3:30 p.m. EDT

The Los Angeles Clippers didn't begin their long homestand in ideal fashion, though they managed a much-needed win despite a poor shooting night.

They hope to rediscover their offensive rhythm Saturday against the Toronto Raptors, who have had a long break to regroup from an embarrassing defensive effort.

The Clippers (20-10) entered a season-high, nine-game homestand having dropped three of four as part of their 3-5 record since Dec. 11 - with no wins over an above-.500 opponent - before defeating league-best Golden State 100-86 on Christmas Day.

"Big win for us. You know we've had a tough season for our standards, we haven't played as well as we liked to," said Chris Paul, who had 22 points. "We started (the game) off horrendous. I think we shot 17 percent in the first quarter, but everybody just kept talking about staying the course, and that's what we did."

Los Angeles missed 16 straight shots in the first quarter and matched its second-lowest field-goal percentage of the season (39.1). Blake Griffin had 18 points and 15 rebounds, shooting 5 for 16 after missing his first eight attempts. Paul had a season-low four assists as the Clippers finished with 18, its fewest at home in six weeks.

Coach Doc Rivers' squad, however, held Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry to 29 points on 11-of-30 shooting and became the first team to keep the Warriors under 90 points. The Clippers had given up 106.1 points per game on 49.9 percent shooting in their previous eight.

"Wow, that was ugly," Rivers said. "... It's nice winning games when you don't play great."

Los Angeles also underwhelmed offensively in its previous game, shooting 40.2 percent in a 107-104 loss at Atlanta on Tuesday.

The Clippers, near the top of the league with a 47.3 field-goal percentage, have rarely been able to rely on their defense. They're 5-8 when shooting 46.3 percent or worse. However, they've held teams to 98.5 points per game at home compared to 103.0 on the road.

Los Angeles has now won eight straight at home, where it hasn't had a longer winning streak since a club-record 13-game run Nov. 28, 2012-Jan. 9, 2013.

"We gotta pile up wins, you know how tough the West is," Paul said of the homestand. "... We got a tough Toronto team coming in here on Saturday. Kyle Lowry's been unbelievable. We gotta be ready to play."

Lowry is among the league leaders with 24.7 points per game on the road, but he's averaged 9.3 on 27.5 percent shooting in the last four matchups with Los Angeles.

The Clippers swept last season's two meetings while shooting 52.9 percent even with Paul missing both. Griffin totaled 66 points while shooting 63.9 percent.

The Raptors (22-7) have had four days off since playing the first of six consecutive road games. They had a season-high six-game winning streak snapped with Monday's 129-120 loss at Chicago. They scored 110-plus points for the third straight game but were outscored 49-37 in the fourth quarter, letting the Bulls shoot 14 for 20.

"We didn't play defense and they executed extremely well," said Lowry, who scored 34 points. "... We didn't give them any pushback. That's one thing we have to make sure we do from now on."

The 49 points marked the most the Raptors had ever allowed in a single quarter, though they have plenty of opportunities to redeem themselves against top-flight competition on this trip. They'll visit the West's top two teams next week - Portland and Golden State.

Toronto is 7-2 against the West, though four wins were against sub-.500 teams.

"It's going to be a great challenge for us," Lowry told the team's official website. "I think we look forward to it. We started off on the wrong foot (Monday) for our road trip, but we've got a chance to come home and regroup, get a couple days off, come back, go to L.A, and play a tough Clippers team."
