KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO could be back by late December, but even he's not confident his knee will be 100 percent. His minutes might have to be scaled back . . . LUKE RIDNOUR will handle the offense with Rubio hampered. The vet is a steady hand in coach Rick Adelman's Euro-style offense . . . They're counting on BRANDON ROY to reclaim his old form after a radical knee procedure. He may never be 100 percent, but he should at least give them sixth-man minutes . . . CHASE BUDINGER is a three-point marksman who moves well off the ball, a perfect fit in Adelman's system . . . J.J. BAREA will take some of the point guard burden as well. He's a top sixth man . . . ALEXEY SHVED can help as a combo guard, though he might have trouble breaking into this rotation . . . MALCOLM LEE is a defensive stopper who won't be asked to shoot very often. FORWARDS: Despite being limited athletically, KEVIN LOVE is an elite rebounder and shooter for a big. He'll continue to be the focal point of this offense once he returns from a broken hand in early December . . . ANDREI KIRILENKO returns to the States after a dominating Euroleague stint. He's a big upgrade at the three and should be comfortable in Adelman's system . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS will continue his attempted transition to the three. As last year proved, he's a long, long ways away. He might have to play himself into a rotation spot . . . DANTE CUNNINGHAM is a nice, efficient big to bring off the bench . . . Since they need shooting on the wings, rookie ROBBIE HUMMEL has a chance to crack the rotation. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a beast, the best offensive rebounder in the NBA. His total rebounding numbers get hurt playing alongside Kevin Love, but Pekovic will continue to bully his way to put-backs . . . GREG STIEMSMA is going to come in and do some pushing and shoving (and occasional shot-blocking) for 12-to-15 MPG.
LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: CHRIS PAUL was every bit an MVP-caliber player in his first year in L.A. They should monitor his minutes late in the regular season to keep him fresh for the playoffs. . . His Achilles is on schedule to be healed by December, and CHAUNCEY BILLUPS will start once he's healthy. He's likely to lose athleticism, and his leash could be short if he shoots as poorly as he did last year . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD steps in to lead the second unit. We'll see how quickly his inefficient, shoot-first ways grow stale . . . ERIC BLEDSOE was a stud in the playoffs. He can't play extended minutes alongside Paul, but coach Vinny Del Negro knows he has to get Bledsoe on the floor . . . WILLIE GREEN provides capable depth, but he's on the outside looking in at the rotation. FORWARDS: BLAKE GRIFFIN's knee injury likely isn't serious enough to linger into the season. He's starting to develop some post moves to go along with his dunks . . . CARON BUTLER played hurt for most of last year, but still did enough to nail down a starting job for this season . . . LAMAR ODOM moped his way back to L.A. Don't be surprised if he has a strong bounce-back year, especially considering he'll be the Clippers' best defensive big . . . GRANT HILL could see some starts, but more likely the 40-year-old is pegged for limited minutes . . . MATT BARNES will replace Hill once he injures himself again . . . RONNY TURIAF will provide some of the toughness they lost when Reggie Evans left . . . TREY THOMPKINS will continue to languish on the bench, especially after sitting out the preseason with a knee injury. CENTERS: He can block shots and rebound, but at this point DeANDRE JORDAN is just too much of a defensive liability in space to play 30-plus minutes. That's why the Clippers will often pair Lamar Odom with Blake Griffin in the frontcourt . . . RYAN HOLLINS can also defend the basket and has six fouls to give.

*Timberwolves-Clippers Preview* ===============================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Minnesota (29-48) at Los Angeles (51-26), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The Los Angeles Clippers already clinched the first Pacific Division title in franchise history, but they'd like to build even more momentum heading into the playoffs.

As they try to set a club record for single-season home victories, the Clippers can complete their first season sweep of Minnesota in 20 years with a fifth consecutive win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

Los Angeles (51-26) is headed to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1992 and 1993, but this postseason will be its first as Pacific champ after completing a season sweep of the rival Lakers with a 109-95 win Sunday.

"It just feels like something we were supposed to do," said Chris Paul, who had 24 points and 12 assists. "It means we're headed in the right direction. We're not satisfied. We understand this is something small compared to the big picture."

As a division winner, the Clippers are guaranteed a top-four seed in the Western Conference playoffs but they're 1 1/2 games back of fifth-place Memphis in the race for home-court advantage in the first round. Los Angeles has five games remaining, including a visit to Memphis on Saturday - its only contest against a team with a winning record.

"Hopefully, we're playing well at the right time going to the playoffs," said guard Jamal Crawford, who had 20 points against the Lakers.

The Clippers shot 53.1 percent while beating Phoenix and the Lakers by a combined 39 points after losing three straight to San Antonio, Houston and Indiana. Blake Griffin had 24 points and 12 rebounds after scoring nine against the Suns last Wednesday.

Griffin has totaled 46 points in the last two games versus Minnesota (29-48). Paul missed both of those meetings with a bruised kneecap, but had 23 and 11 assists in a 101-95 home win over the Timberwolves on Nov. 28.

Los Angeles hopes to regain the services of veteran guard Chauncey Billups, who returned to practice Tuesday after he missed five straight games with a groin injury.

"We definitely want him back as soon as possible, but at the end of the day we want him healthy," Paul told the Clippers' official website. "We plan on playing for a while so we want him to be as fresh and healthy as possible."

The Clippers, who have two more chances to earn a franchise-record 31st home win, have not swept a season series from Minnesota since 1992-93.

The Timberwolves averaged 109.7 points and shot 52.9 percent during a season-high three-game road winning streak that ended with Tuesday's 105-89 loss at Golden State. Chase Budinger scored a team-high 17 points off the bench for Minnesota, which shot 36.7 percent while its starters were outscored 86-38 by the Warriors' first five.

"We didn't play good at all. That's it," said point guard Ricky Rubio, who made five free throws and went 0 for 10 from the floor.

It was the fifth game this season Rubio failed to make at least one field-goal attempt.

He's been held to 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting in the last two meetings with the Clippers.
