KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38.
LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: CHRIS PAUL was every bit an MVP-caliber player in his first year in L.A. They should monitor his minutes late in the regular season to keep him fresh for the playoffs. . . His Achilles is on schedule to be healed by December, and CHAUNCEY BILLUPS will start once he's healthy. He's likely to lose athleticism, and his leash could be short if he shoots as poorly as he did last year . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD steps in to lead the second unit. We'll see how quickly his inefficient, shoot-first ways grow stale . . . ERIC BLEDSOE was a stud in the playoffs. He can't play extended minutes alongside Paul, but coach Vinny Del Negro knows he has to get Bledsoe on the floor . . . WILLIE GREEN provides capable depth, but he's on the outside looking in at the rotation. FORWARDS: BLAKE GRIFFIN's knee injury likely isn't serious enough to linger into the season. He's starting to develop some post moves to go along with his dunks . . . CARON BUTLER played hurt for most of last year, but still did enough to nail down a starting job for this season . . . LAMAR ODOM moped his way back to L.A. Don't be surprised if he has a strong bounce-back year, especially considering he'll be the Clippers' best defensive big . . . GRANT HILL could see some starts, but more likely the 40-year-old is pegged for limited minutes . . . MATT BARNES will replace Hill once he injures himself again . . . RONNY TURIAF will provide some of the toughness they lost when Reggie Evans left . . . TREY THOMPKINS will continue to languish on the bench, especially after sitting out the preseason with a knee injury. CENTERS: He can block shots and rebound, but at this point DeANDRE JORDAN is just too much of a defensive liability in space to play 30-plus minutes. That's why the Clippers will often pair Lamar Odom with Blake Griffin in the frontcourt . . . RYAN HOLLINS can also defend the basket and has six fouls to give.

*Knicks-Clippers Preview* =========================

New York (38-25) at Los Angeles (45-21), 3:30 p.m. EDT

The stars usually show up when the New York Knicks visit Los Angeles, but it's unclear this time if the club's All-Stars will be on the court.

Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler are listed as questionable for the Knicks as they face the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday in a matchup of struggling division leaders.

New York (38-25) has been blown out in dropping the first three games of this five-game trip to see its Atlantic Division lead over Brooklyn cut to one game. The Knicks were without Anthony and Chandler in Thursday's 105-90 loss at Portland.

The All-Stars were hurt in Wednesday's 117-94 loss at Denver. Anthony returned to New York to have his right knee drained after leaving that contest early while Chandler suffered a bruised knee in a collision.

The Knicks have lost by an average of 22.4 points on this trip.

"I've got to do a better job of getting these guys over this hump," coach Mike Woodson said. "Right now, it's tough times. We've lost some games out here on the road."

Los Angeles (45-21) is in much better position to win its first division title, leading Golden State by 8 1/2 games in the Pacific. The Clippers, however, are in a tight race with Memphis and Denver to gain home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Chris Paul scored 24 points and Blake Griffin added 22 in Los Angeles' third loss in five games, 96-85 at home to the Grizzlies on Friday.

"I could care less what seed we are," Paul said. "We just need to be playing the right way when the time comes, and we're not there yet."

This contest features the NBA's best bench scorers in the Clippers' Jamal Crawford (16.9 points per game) and the Knicks' J.R. Smith (16.7).

Crawford, however, made 1 of 10 shots for two points Friday after missing two games with a sore ankle. The former Knicks guard scored a team-high 27 in a 102-88 victory at New York on Feb. 10.

Smith, meanwhile, tried to pick up the slack Thursday without Anthony's 27.5 points per game. The shooting guard scored 33 for his second-highest total of the season.

Smith was held to six points against the Clippers last month, as Crawford's effort helped Los Angeles post a 48-15 edge in bench points. The Knicks got 42 points from Anthony and had Amare Stoudemire available for that matchup as well.

Now New York is unsure who will suit up Sunday.

"We've got a big game on Sunday in LA so we've got to come ready to play," Woodson said.

The Clippers would get a boost by the return of Caron Butler, who missed Friday's game with a strained left elbow.

"I feel like it's going to be a strong possibility that I play Sunday," Butler told the Clippers' official website. "I'm feeling better every day and every treatment session."

This contest also features the NBA's three oldest players in Jason Kidd and Kurt Thomas from the Knicks and Grant Hill from the Clippers. Kidd turns 40 later this month, with the others already at that age.
